Finally, I can benchpress 300lbs!

A long time goal of mine has been to be able to bench press 315 pounds. Some of you may have seen my thread about this, well today I reached a milestone into stonghood. As you can see I am pretty happy about this, just wanted to share some success toward a goal.

This has been many months of non-stop work, I can't wait too finally push three plates!

@iam3green: The bar, if it is one of those skinny home gym bars is probably 20lbs, so that's be 110lbs you're pressing, not bad for just starting out.

@TheFreeMan: Thanks a lot. If you're jumping that fast this early it will only be a matter of months before you're near 200 lbs, that's if you keep pushing hard of course.

good job on that. i actually just got a bench press right next to me. i work out a little bit with dumbbells and now a bench press. i am benching around 90 pounds 15 and 25 on each side, i don't know how much the bar weighs.

I've only recently started lifting weights. I'm not a very big person, very average in size, and a couple of months ago I could barely bench 90. I'm just about to move up to 130, now. It felt really good just to improve that much, so I can't imagine the satisfaction that you've got to feel hitting something so colossal as 300 god damn pounds! I'll be quite satisfied if I ever make it to 250, 300 is seriously awesome. Congratulations!

Hahah I remember that scene!

I totally remember that scene too even though it's been years since I've seen that.

@big_jon: Great job duder, I benched 315 a while back, but it's dropped recently cause I've done so much cardio work, lost some muscle. Last time I maxed I put up 285.

If you want to try something really fun (and by fun, I mean something that might make you cry) try Hellcentric reps on Bench. Put on weight a little bit lighter than you would do eight reps.

Then do 8 regular reps. Once you finish, have your spotter apply gradual pressure and push the bar down towards your chest. The spotter pushes the bar just above the chest, then pulls it up. Then the spotter applies pressure until the bar goes all the way to the benching person's chest and touches it, then the spotter pulls all the way up again. Most of the way down + All the way down = 1 Hellcentric Rep.

So do:

Regular Reps x 8
Most of the way down, All the Way down x 4 each, switching off each time

Do that 4 times, fucking killer dude. Just pain, seeing how long you can possibly endure it. Like negative benches, but way more brutal. I usually take a rape shower after these. Hella helps build muscle.

Just give a try sometime, something to switch it up and it really helps.

Anyway, congrats man, time to hit 4 plates now!

I used to work out a lot. Got up to benching 275 lbs in high school. Then often times people would randomly make remarks that I was compensating for being a short guy (I'm 5'5) by weightlifting. So it was like, what's the use in bodybuilding if people don't give you the same respect as an average height or taller guy who weightlifts?

So then I stopped and got on the ice cream and ham diet. Can't say I'm treated any different.

@big_jon: I'm not gonna lie, I've only been doing this since the start of 2012 (I used to swim a lot, but it's been five years). Really good results, though; I'm stronger, I'm a faster runner, my arms and legs are getting bigger, my gut's dying down. Oh, and I have a bit more sustain when it comes to singing. All from a basic 600m three times a week :P

@DuskVamp: Yes they are, I think that once you get to a point of doing enough in a row, you'll be able to start working on regular push ups, "planking" seems a little redundant because if you're barley able to bend your elbows you're not really going to get far with that fast.

I'd say once every three or four nights, so your muscles get some rest, and repair, do as many of those knee assisted push-ups as you can, once, you get past fifteen or twenty try a full on push up, if you can do one, then do as many as you can, then as many knee assisted push ups as you can once you're done, you'll get the hang of it and make progress pretty fast I'd guess.

@DuskVamp: "Girl pushups" once every few nights, as many as you can do in a row, you'll get there if you do that. My record is 75 pushups in a row, that's at 210 pounds, when I was fourteen I could barely manage ten, you work your way up, trust me.

@shway: Yeah thanks a lot. That's a really good pace, my record is 7km in 45 minutes.

@habster3: Thanks a lot dude, I can't even do a full lap of a pool so yeah, not so good at the swimming thing.

I tried doing push ups yesterday, I bend my arms about an inch and collapse to the ground. I've been advised to try bench pressing instead, but my goal for the next month is to manage 1 proper push up..

Good job dude. I recently broke over into 265, but haven't been able to get serious because of school. Now I think I'm gonna tone it down just for a healthy body rather than keeping up a strength regimen. Been doing more cardio, core, etc and cutting out really unhealthy shit from my diet (i.e. No more Dr. Pepper for me), and trying not to kill my already weak respiratory system.

Anyway, good shit on accomplishing that goal. It's a fucking magical feeling when you get something done like that after all that work.

@big_jon: I just remembered the worst thing about going really heavy weight to increase max strength. Whenever I didn't go with friends (which was quite frequently back then, and every single time I go now since nobody goes to the gym anymore), I'd have to rely on a stranger to spot me while I was doing weight that I wouldn't be able to push up on my own since I was lifting weight I was planning on not being able to get by myself in the last few reps. And it was a goddamn crap shoot whether the person that was spotting me would know what the hell they were doing. You'd think spotting someone would be an easy thing but it's incredible the various ways people screw it up. Whether it's too much help too early, not enough help when you've told them how many reps you're going for, to weird positions where they're helping different amounts on either side and the goddamn worst. Tapping. What kind of bizzarro world do people live in where they help someone by tapping the weight up when they're having trouble. Also, one time, and only one time, I had the misfortune of getting a spot from someone who was too weak to help with the weight when I started tiring out. After that, I'd look for someone who at least looked like they could upright row around a hundred pounds =P

All in all, congrats! It's actually a really nice perk being sorta strong. Just last night, I was carrying groceries back from the car and thinking how annoying it would be if I had to make multiple trips from the car to my place rather than being able to carry everything in one go. It was just like, 7 or so grocery bags plus a 24 pack of bottled water, but still. I'd gladly trade 100 pounds on the bench press for another half foot of height though. . . It'd be nice to be 6 ft 4ish.

Congrats man, must feel good to finally hit that. I myself have no interest in 1 rep max but I started doing Stronglifts 5x5 a few weeks ago to hopefully get me over my 150 Bench Press, 225 Deadlift 5-8 rep maxes.

@Fobwashed: Not really sure, I will probably be much less focused on my max, maybe start doing sets of 8, I am all over the place in my training right now, sometimes pushing 225 out for high peps, or sometimes 275 for low, but I think once you reach a milestone the numbers become a bit less important, I think I will like working more reps though, it feels good to push out 225, or 235 like it's puppy weight.

I'd like to put up 225 20 times in a row, my current best is 13.

@matthias2437: Not bad at all.

That's awesome man! I'm only up to benching 210. But since I have only been weight lifting about a year and weigh 165 lbs. So that isn't too bad.
