This might sound odd, but playing Tomb Raider: Underworld to completion helped me feel good about the way that I play video games. Like, I died all the time, jumped of a ledge wrong a lot, used the hint system constantly, didn't find all the treasures or relics, and played on easy mode. And you know, I loved it. With some birthday money that I got recently too I picked up Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE and I'm saying things like "What is happening?" and "This is crazy." I've never played a game like Tokyo Mirage before, and I love that I have only a little idea of what's going on. All of it is like in my face crazy stuff.
Something that helped me was not buying any new or used game for myself for about 5 1/2 months this year. Not spending money on games helped me focus on playing some older titles, but also gave me a chance to scope out some of the newer titles coming out now and in the future (waiting for E3 was easier to do). This planning has really helped me because now I won't get bogged down in too much of the gaming calendar stuff like I used to. I've made a plan and I'm going to try and stick with it, even when there's a sale on the eShop. Some coupons at Gamestop were going to expire so I decided to use them too.
Another thing that has helped me is to make a plan of 2-3 games that I want to play in order but not at the same time. After Tomb Raider and Tokyo Mirage, I'm looking at playing Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation and changing things up. After that maybe Dynasty Warriors 8 or Prince of Persia, but I'm not sure. I like the fact that my playing skills are not meant to impress anyone. I'm just having fun and I like that part the most. I feel like a kid again, and I've missed that part about gaming.
Good luck on your backlog. I hope some of my suggestions can help you too.
