My List of Top 10 Actors

#1: Robert Duvall - He was awesome in The Godfather and Apocalypse Now. He completely immerses himself into all of his roles.
#2: Al Pacino - Also great in the Godfather, also Scarface, and Donnie Brasco
#3: Johnny Depp - He is one of the most versatile actors I've ever seen
#4: Michael Caine - He may have been in some failure movies, but he has been in many greats, such as Sleuth, and Hannah and Her Sisters
#5: Anthony Hopkins - What is there not to like?
--Too lazy to write anything, so I'll just put names now--
#6: Russel Crowe
#7: Phillip Hoffman
#8: Tom Hanks
#9: Daniel Day-Lewis
#10: Edward Norton

Make your own list if you wish, I'm curious to see what others favorite actors are.

Your list should literally be flipped upside down. Daniel Day Lewis and Tom Hanks are amazing, while actors like Robert Duvall and Al Pacino just seem to play the same role in every movie.

Robert Duvall is amazing, but he's no Robert De Niro.  You also forgot Secondhand Lions and Lonesome Dove in that list of Duvall stuff.  Hell, he even made Open Range completely bearable.

But Robert De Niro is the greatest actor to ever live.  That's an undeniable fact.  FACT!

Tom Hanks is a very good actor.

Everyone who said Heath Ledger: He was amazing in The Dark Knight, but that's really the only time he's ever shined in my opinion. At least his last movie was his best movie.

Well he didn't finish the movie though. He died like half way through filming it. So The Dark Knight was his last FULL movie.

From Wikipedia: though Ledger's death one-third of the way through filming caused production to be temporarily suspended[1]. Ledger's role was recast with Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell portraying transformations of Ledger's character Tony as he travels through a dream world.

So they still found a way to make it work.

Yeah, I looked it up apparently they only shot 45% of what Ledger was supposed to do.

Actually "actor" is a sexless term, as it is a professional title. Just for clarity, thanks.

I'm gonna list my top 5 favorites here. Keep in mind that I don't necessarily think these are the top 5 best actors around.

5. Tom Cruise
4. Tom Hanks
3. Will Smith
2. Bruce Willis
1. Mel Gibson

Just for the record, since this list is no doubt inspired by your Keanu-bashing Matrix thread from earlier today, Keanu Reeves would probably rank somewhere among my top 10 favorites.

I fucking hate Stallone and every movie he has ever made. I enjoyed Daylight a little because I kept imagining Pierce Brosnan in the leading role.

Am I the only one that thought his performance in Tropic Thunder wasn't that great and that the movie itself kind of sucked? I thought the actual footage they were initially shooting for the movie within the first 15 minutes or so was pretty awesome, but after that I think it went way downhill.

I can see how you'd put Norton in the spot over jr, since he wasnt even on the scene for quite a while.

Considering the fact that I wouldn't have realized he wasnt actually a black guy if I hadn't seen the promotional material in the theatre, I'd say he was amazing. It wasn't necessairily about how funny he was(perhaps better than average) but totally becoming a black guy, he did in spades.

Wow, I finally agree with HDead on something....

Also, manseres would probably have a market in today's America....

Anyways, my top 10 actors would include mostly character actors... if only I knew their names. That's index of their greatness, they blend in with the scenery of the director, writers' and producers' vision.

But if you're asking me who my ten favourite screenhoggers are....

10) Sam Waterston
9) Clint Eastwood
8) Jeff Bridges
7) Steve Buscemi
6) Brad Pitt
5) Forrest Whittaker
4) Gary Oldman
3) Daniel Day-Lewis (am I the only person who saw his character in There Will be Blood as a protagonist?)
2) Jimmy Stewart (even though I thought It's a Wonderful Life was godawful, but he was great in Harvey)
1) Peter Sellers

... would be my response

I would consider Marlon Brando the greatest ever, but DeNiro is no doubt the best living. Yes, the fact that he is not on the list is NOT GOOD. Still, Anthony Hopkins is one of my favorites, but I would also suggest Kevin Spacey, Christopher Walken (Deer Hunter), Clint Eastwood, and, well, Humphrey Bogart, but no one knows him anymore (unfortunately) so I wouldn't expect him to be on this type of list.

For me, most actors of Hollywood's golden era make the same roles over and over again. I think Humphrey Bogart (sp?) is insanely overrated as is Jimmy Stewart.

That being said, I want to kick myself for not adding Orson Welles to the list.

1. Paul Rudd

2. Ethan Hawke

3. Will Smith

4. Zach Braff <---great director also

5. Tom Hanks

6. Christian Bale
7. Shia Labeouf
8. Jackie Earle Haley <---he should get a Oscar for his role in Watchmen, it made Heath Ledger's Joker seem like a baby
9. Seth Rogen <--despite him being in only comedys, just like paul rudd, they (him and paul) both seem like they could do so much more then just comedys and be successful at both
10. Thomas Jane <--best punisher to ever grace the screen

Thanks for restoring my faith.  Yeah, truth be told I really don't expect anyone to know about Cary Grant (Arsenic and Old Lace) , Jack Lemmon (the Apartment), Henry Fonda (the Grapes of Wrath), Gregory Peck (To Kill a Mockingbird), Jimmy Stewart (the Philadelphia Story), Richard Burton (Who's Afraid of Virgina Woolfe), Steve McQueen (The Great Escape), Robert Donat (the 39 Steps), Gary Cooper (High Noon), or Bogart (High Sierra).

Hey, there's my 10.  Okay, in truth I'd probably shuffle them around to include Gene Hackman, Robert Deniro and Jack Nickolson, but I wanted to make a point that many great actors existed before the 70s.

I know a lot of the GB members are too young to know these names, but I also know that there are many available resources to learn about them out there, too.  I wasn't going to the theater when these actors were doing their finest work, either.  In fact, I too wasn't even born then, but I wanted to learn more about old films and so I rented movies, watched a lot of TCM and read some books.  I'm not trying to sound elitest or crabby, I'd just like to know that people today are making the same effort not to forget our film history.   Your comment, RHCPfan24 , reminded me that there are still some people out there that respect the past as they forge ahead into the future.

Most definitely. Those actors you listed are all great and their movies are classics. It's a shame they are overlooked today. I love to see those types of movies, but there are people who just get annoyed with black and white for some reason. It doesn't make sense! My brother has never seen Casablanca but he would see Sin City any day. So, it isn't really aesthetic, it is more style. The style is different, yes, than today, but that is a good thing. There aren't any special effects, there is a bit of grain over the video and audio tracks, but the acting and screenplays are really something special. Cinema was still in its early years then. Experimentation and trial and error were more prevalent. I love movies now and then, and there are plenty of movies now that eschew common tradition (Eternal Sunshine, I am looking at you!), but the older, "golden age" of cinema truly has something that today's is missing.

Humphrey Bogart, but no one knows him anymore (unfortunately) so I wouldn't expect him to be on this type of list.

I agree with you, but there are some of us (ME, jakob187 for sure) that have. Still, it is a video game forum....what else can you expect?"

Unfortunately I'm an oldie and happen to know more than half the people on that list. Great actors by the way. Yours, mine and ours is one of my favorite films with henry fonda. Jack Lemmon was funny in grumpy old men. You forget to include walter matthau and jerry lewis :P Trust me I know all about the old movies and films considering that I have a dad who still thinks we still live in the 50's today. But then again he was born in 1951.

You're a moron if you don't think he's extremely versatile.

It's just a matter of opinion. You can't call someone a moron because they may disagree with you..
