DEVELOPER DIARY: @Replies Update

Ok dudes - quick update to the @reply and @quote functionality in the boards and the comment system.


We just deployed the following functionality:
  • @replies: These work the same way they currently do. You click the 'Reply' link in the boards/comments to reply to a user. This action also sends a PM to that user letting them know that you replied to them.
  • @quotes: The quote system now works the same way as @replies. When you click the 'Quote' link the boards/comments, you will quote that user in your post and this will also send out a PM to that user letting them know that you replied to them. 
  • Quotes are now truncated when they're displayed. We wanted to clean up all of the crazy nesting that happens in the boards when you quote somebody. If you want to see the entire html of the quoted post, there is a 'more' link that you can click which will pull up that text.
  • These features are now available to every single user on the site. The 200+ post limit has been lifted.
  • Quotes and Replies are now available in comments.

@coonce: Yeah, I just noticed the [More] thing for quotes. Would it be possible to get something in the forum preferences to make it show the whole quote automatically? I kinda like seeing the whole quote, and while I see the advantage of this new thing, I'd like to be able to change my settings so I see it the old way.

@coonce: There seems to be some weirdness when quoting someone who has a quote in their post. Just look at Dr_Nefarious's second post in this thread to see it's weirdness.

It seems like quotes are getting truncated a little too severely. If someone is only quoting one or two sentences, I don't see a reason for the second half of their sentence to be cut off. It's a nice feature but the current implementation and level of truncation is a little annoying. Can the character limit be raised to accommodate two or three sentences from a single post, and then truncate the rest?

I'm loving the @quotes feature, in the little time that it has been online it has already proven me usefull twice. 

edit: might it be a good idea to have a seperate section for @reply in your PM section so that it does not clutter up the inbox with these notifications?

The weird thing is that it's making quotes harder to read. The feature needs a bit more development.

I clicked the More link and found there wasn't actually anything else there... Definitely needs some adjusting.

Not a fan of the quoting thing. Generally I would only use @replies if I couldn't quote someone anyway, I think most of the people I talk to know to check back on their topics making the PM notification unnecessary, and the the @ symbol also seems pointless when you're quoting someone.

Loving the truncated quotes. One thing though, maybe the truncated quote should show the last line of the quote rather than the first?

Another suggestion: you know how in PMs, a conversation is like its own private thread? Apply that to the @quote thing, but only when it's between the same two people. Otherwise, you end up with wasted inbox space due to some random argument about how Earthbound is a piece of crap :P:|.

Adding the "@" is meaningless, and the new system tends to crop out short quotes needlessly (although the entire thing is rather needless). That, and you can't edit quotes anymore. I can't remove most of a quote and address a specific sentence or paragraph from a user anymore either; all this update did was increase the clutter and confusion for many, which wasn't ever a problem in the first place. Weak.
