" They gave Deadly Premonition a 10, Red Dead Redemption a 9.0 (ish), and Peace Walker an 8 (ish). Now I like Deadly Premonition as much as anybody else, but I can't take any of the reviews seriously when their scores are so out of whack.  "

The DP review was a joke...they also reviewed Ekans (the pokemon) and gave it a ten. Like it is a review score on the internet for a video game. It's not deciding the country's economy, so it doesn't really matter what score they give it. I know reviews matter for the sake of consumers, but it is more about the written review. The only reason Destructoid started using scores was to get on Metacritic. The first year or so they just had a Buy it/Rent it/Skip it system. As an aside, I think RDR is a 9ish game. It's leaps and bounds better than anything Rockstar has done in years, and definitely their best game to date. Like, GTA IV is almost a joke in comparison. I feel like it's comparing CoD2 to MW2.

As for the P3P review. This guy obviously loves Atlus games and is really good at RPGs. A very well made Atlus RPG that's portable is probably going to get a high score. And at dtoid, like Giant Bomb a 10 or 5 doesn't mean the game is absolutely, definitively perfect in every imaginable way to the point where everyone on earth needs to experience it.  @RVonE said:

They won't. Also, The PS2 version of Persona 3 is superior. "
How? I know it has less things in it, isn't portable, is harder/slower to navigate the town, and has the crappy grindfest "the answer", but yeah.

" From my experience with the guy, Dale North is an insane otaku who will love anything that Japan pumps out. "
yeah, the 10 rating was to be expected from Dale. I think I remember a year or two ago on a podcast he listed his favorite games he had played that year- half of them were SMT games. And pretty much every Japan-oriented post Destructoid puts out, Dale's the one covering it. Not necessarily a diss on him, it's just like asking a "bro" if they like Call of Duty- you know the answer already. "
Well he tried to review Demon's Souls but couldn't. But he just likes RPGs and can beat them crazy fast. Like he beat Persona 4 in like a week or something crazy like that. And like he still has a job and everything.

@xaLieNxGrEyx: While Lord of the Rings surely isn't overrated, I agree the Catcher in the Rye is crap. Holden Caulfield is a whiney little bitch with not many interesting things to say, and whenever he does have something interesting to say he tends to say it in a way I cannot stand hearing. Insanely overrated book.

I remember playing it on my brand new playstation. I also remember beating and saying to my brother "seventy hours, for this?"  "
FF7 didn't offer anything new story-wise, aside from a few notable characters and moments. FF6's story is virtually the same in a different setting and executed far better.

" @xaLieNxGrEyx: This isn't about hate, but I will go ahead and explain my comments.

" to say FFVII is a poor game, or undeserving of it's acclaim seems like a very silly and immature thing to say.  "

It may seem like that, but on closer examination FFVII just does not hold up as well as FFIX. It's one of the worst games in the series. I don't want to explain why here; go ahead and listen to the podcast, those guys do a tremendous job of summarizing why it's not as good as people think it is.

" Also, MGS is one of the greatest series in gaming. "

Just before I touch upon this, I just want to say that I ran a Metal Gear blog for a while a few years back. Not that this gives me special insight; I just want to point out that I'm familiar with the games. I've cleared MGS2 an unreasonable amount of times.

Metal Gear is just not as good as people think it is. Its gameplay and design was special up until 2002, but afterward other developers did more things better, and Metal Gear has just fallen behind to the point where it's become embarrassing. Story-wise, Metal Gear is similarly not as good as people think it is. Its script is shoddy, its dialogue immature, and its character development meek. Snake Eater's story was by in large a huge waste of time. Sons of Liberty was the series' peak, where Kojima was attempting to get aside some interesting themes. (Unfortunately, Kojima just doesn't know what he's talking about. He doesn't understand world politics, and he shouldn't be commenting on environmental issues or world peace, because nobody really cares.)

Gameplay wise, MGS3 was already years behind its competition. Max Payne 2, GTA San Andreas were better games by far. MGS4 was no good. It tried to mix elements of western game design but only went half-way, and picked the bad bits above all. Eurogamer gave it an accurate score - 8. Its perfect scores were utterly unwarranted, something people are only beginning to realize now.

To try and turn this back toward the topic, Metal Gear fans reject all of this and think Kojima is god.

Probably not god.
Probably not god.
Similarly Final Fantasy VII fans reject all criticism for the game. The truth lies somewhere in between. But if you're unable to accept criticism of any kind, you've crossed the line. Take a look at the fans response to Kojima when he announced Rising for the XBOX 360 as well as the PS3

That is a pathetic fan base.

" @ZanzibarBreeze: Also may I claim ignorance and ask who are those people you mentioned above? "
That's not ignorance, don't worry. :) All those guys used to work for 1UP.com, not everybody knows who they are, and it's not essential knowledge or anything. "
To be honest, saying Max Payne 2 and San Andreas are better than MGS3 gameplay wise I pure opinion. I didn't play MGS3 until Subsistence came out, but I sure as hell would never play MP2 or San Andreas more than once, but I would totally play MGS3 again. I really don't think MGS is the best thing ever, and while I enjoyed MGS4 a lot I know it did a bunch of things wrong to the story(OH GOD AFTER THE CREDITS WHY?). As for FF7, it's not a bad game at all, but surely there are better games in the series. Heck, I prefer Crisis Core myself. Regardless, I despise it's fanbase(I think I hate KH's more even if I voted for FF7) despite how important of an RPG it is. Think about it. Before FF7, every RPG wanted to be like Dragon Quest. Then after, virtually every RPG tries to be like FF7, aside from some games like Mario RPGs, Mother games, and the occasional notable WRPG like Fallout, Planescape Torment, or Morrowind.
