Adieu my friends, i bid you all farewell, My name was Endogene

My name is Endogène,

I'm the 6th most important contributor to GiantBomb.com out of a total of 42985 members with a total of 57329 points that i got on 3523 different pages. I joined the site July 21, 2008, the day the site was launched. Including this final blog post i will have posted 3858 comments on the site. I am in the top 10 poster rank of both the "delete and combine" forum and the "editing and tools" forum. After I was chosen to become a moderator I moderated over 6000 submissions and posted  232 times in the "moderation hangout" placing 3rd on the top poster list. Today i turn my back to this all.

I've genuinely enjoyed the countless hours I've spend on Giant Bomb. I loved helping out others, I loved adding information for others to see, I loved all the silliness of the forums and the great personalities that visit them yet i do no longer want this all.

My name is Endogène

When i first visited the forums things where wild, uncertain, nothing was decided, no rules existed same was for the Wiki part of the site, the one promoted to be the big feature of GiantBomb that was buried under submissions that moderators who were chosen out of those who had the most points in the early hours that the site launched. I've got the my first real attention by defending non censured images from adult games, most notably Bible Black. I've spend days saying that if the site wants to be a encyclopedia it should allow everything without exception be it offending or not while being yelled at and called names by others before finally a staff member came out with a small message saying that it was an okay thing to do. I then gained some more popularity helping others out with wiki related questions and moving data over from duplicate pages. It was great being a meaningful part of something constructive on such a big scale.
Once i had hit 5000 points i started adding new pages to the site at alarming speeds so that users who did not already had 5K points whould have pages that they could work on without having to wait on moderation. I continued working on the wiki to a point that i reached the top 100 that was crowded with people who gamed the system be it by bugs or willingly. I was proud, my name on that page meant that i had helped others out.
As i continued working on wiki pages my rank as my "notoriety" climbed, I was never afraid to defend what i believe in and and take on  the things I oppose. I've often got into conflict with other users due to this, however I am proud of the amount of self control and objectivity i've shown during these arguments and that I have never verbally disrespected others.
During my stay on GiantBomb I've done my best promoting games that needed attention by either posting about them or filling in their wiki articles as good as i could, I was always proud and happy once i was done making a wiki page for a game yet sad at the same time since i knew that if i did not do it nobody would...
After some months I as well as another two users were added to the moderation team, two wiki mods, one forum mod. I delved into the submission queue checking everyone of the for plagiarism and correcting them if needed, i would always leave a detailed comment for the users explaining when i would deny a submission explaing how they should do it next time. At the end all my effort was for nothing, the reply function of the moderation queue was broken since the site launched, nobody told me... I was upset.

My name is Endogène

I am tired, tired of seeing so much of everyone their effort being wasted. GiantBomb is supposed to be a community site, yet it's founders neglect it all together. How is a community supposed to prosper if it's founders do not support it? It pains me to see users troubled with the site, asking it's creators directly for change, proposing ideas be they hard or simple to implement and seeing no word what so ever from these founders to a point that the mods have to come over and to say the GiantBomb team is but small and can't take care of everything. I agreed with those who said that when the site was created but seeing the same issue still exist now that the site has almost hit its one year mark makes it hard for me to believe that they even care. GiantBomb's business model seems to be to pump out as many different features as possible that will lure new users in but by doing this they are neglecting what their core, the people who invest their personal time in making the site what it is want. The never ending trivia and the achievement feature might be nice but there are so many things that actually matter that need to be done.
After I had become a moderator I've done nothing but try and make the founders realize the things that were absolutely needed being fixed, added, clarified all in vain. Never did the founders even answered my request even when supported by the other moderators, the only time i had contact with one of them is when i started doing what they had always neglected out of my own, delete duplicate page. I used the tool that allowed us moderators to rename game pages to change duplicate games into games that were not yet added to the database. I got a message asking what i was doing and after explaining how i was "deleting" pages I was told that it was okay to do. Afterwards i discussed it with the other mods and we stumbled upon some cases where this method might break the site. I messaged the founder again asking if i still had green light  ot use this method despite the risky pages, i never got an answer and thus found myself uncertain if i could continue or not, I had no choice then stop. With pain I would see the list of pages that needed to be deleted more and more. As time passes more issues rise, the community discusses them, proposes solutions, no answer, nothing happens... Do the founders live in a tower so high above ground that they do only see clouds under them and not those below struggling?

My name is Endogène

No longer will I stay here, no longer will i accept this behavior towards those who support you. I hope that I will be the only one who has to leave for you to understand that they way you are neglecting your core is unacceptable. I hope that you will see reason and that GiantBomb will become what it is supposed to be, a community site!

For what is a man, what has he got?
If not himself, then he has naught.
To say the things he truly feels
And not the words of one who kneels.
The record shows I took the blows
And did it my way!

My name was Endogène!

He's a coward because he doesn't wanna give 2 shits about what is just "a website...about video games!" anymore? A place like this sure would be at the top of my "to ditch" list if it was annoying me enough... It sounds like a severe case of you don't know what you're talking about to me.

" It's sad to see you go Endogene You've always been a great contributor to the site, and you were one of the most active wiki mods on the forums, and were extremely helpful to people in the Delete/Combine requests, and the Editing & Tools forum. It was always nice knowing you were never far away, because people tend to pay more attention to a moderator than a normal user. You were a great member and will be really missed.

@snide:
We all understand that you're a small development team, and have a lot of big plans for the site, and some things have to take priority over others. But some of these small problems with the site are starting to become really annoying. The main problem is that there is a HUGE backlog of pages which need to be deleted. Mods NEED to have deletion privileges. It was fine when Gman would pop along every week or so and take care of the requests, but it has been many many months since he has done that, and the situation is out of control. I don't expect staffers to come along and delete pages, I know you're all busy people, but we have moderators to do that sort of stuff, but they don't have the power to.  It can't be very helpful to new users wanting to use the wiki, either to edit it, or to research a game, to search for Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers, or one of the many other duplicate pages, and find 2 pages for it (not to mention that they probably wouldn't find Magic The Gathering anyway, because the search feature throws a fit every time you use the word "The", which is also very annoying). Now, with me having no knowledge of website coding, I have no idea how hard it would be to give mods deletion privalages. Thinking logically, I know staff have the ability, so code for deleting pages exists, so I would imagine it would be a case of copying that code from the Staff section, and pasting it into the Moderator section. I realize I'm extremely ignorant, and it is probably significantly harder than that, but even if it does take more work, this is a feature which we really really need.Another missing feature which many users are calling for is an edit log and a revert system. I do realize that this is probably a big task, and would take a lot of coding, but it is something you should think about making a priority. As the site grows, and more and more users have over 1000 points, there have started to be more cases where two users are editing a page at the same time, and the user who clicks submit second consequently wipes out the edits of the first person. It is annoying, and something should be done about it. An edit log and revert system is pretty standard in wiki's, and a feature which you should be looking to implement in giant bomb.As an extremely active user of the forums, I've started to notice more and more people expressing negative feelings towards these problems with the site. We do understand you are a small development team, and have multiple sites to maintain, but these features would benefit all 3 sites, and are really needed. I sometimes get the impression from newer users that these problems will may be discouraging them from becoming active in editing the wiki. And also, ending on a lighter note, I thought of Odo with the mention of founders too. Great minds think alike!!!!! "

From what I gather of the current situation, above anything else right now there needs to be adequate level of communication between the all the Wiki moderators. How can Giant Bomb possibly hope to rectify certain issues, when the supposed team, isn't as cohesive as it needs to be.

Secondly, on the issue of improving things for the future.  A system of debating about significant changes to the site would benefit the site a great deal. I will never understand why any website would decide to make changes in some godly fashion without even consulting the community beforehand. Why make changes for the benefit of the community, when you haven't even heard what they think would benefit them as users?.

Why does this happen?, I cannot for the life of me understand this. In my profession when I go into any design process I will ask the right questions to the right people before I even contemplate working on something. It shows little regard to the community you think are trying to help, when you bypass their opinions on large design decisions that effect all here significantly.

Ultimately, it's better communication all round that's needed from the staff. I can hazard a guess that Endogene didn't feel as though enough was in place to see sufficent changes happen anytime soon.

It sucks that you feel the need to leave. Even more so because I kind of agree with many of your points...

However in defence of giantbomb I always found the staff very available, and despite several obvious flaws to the design - it remains my internet home.

You should point out the points that we need to change on the website here, because we are the comunity and would like to know what is there to change because if a whole bunch of people asks what should change on the site to the founders, we could get these changes.
Look at how much people asked for the iphone app and it is coming.

Wow, I can't believe I read this entire thread...

Endo has some seriously valid points (long-time lurker here), and at the same time has some serious emotional investment that should probably have been directed at something less ethereal than cyberspace. If he had made the same point without the "My name is..." and the song/poem at the end, it probably would have been better received. As it stands, all it needs is a little /wrist at the end to make it about the most emo post of 2009; sorry, I'm just saying.

Actually it kind of reminds me of Eminem's first hit song "My name is (chicka-chicka) Endogene!"

I came in here to post basically what Linkyshinks and MattyFTM have said. Thanks guys.

I will add one thing that hopefully someone will consider-

@snide said:
"In general I believe Giant Bomb is the most fully featured gaming site on the web and although we have our weak spots we're generally trying out best to both keep people happy and add to the site so that we're not serving just one aspect of the community."
I have a feeling that a majority of users who care about a "fully featured gaming website" would have enjoyed a more streamlined wiki process with working tools for themselves and moderaters than a Trivia section and an image editor with increasingly worse design. That's all.

I'm out. Radiation levels rising.

I guess goodluck is in order Endogene. You did some hard work around the site and hopefully you are happy with the choice of leaving and have no regrets. Somewhat saddened to see you not soldiering on through the more difficult times and giving the Staff some more credit, support and faith. But it is your decision and choice, so I won't say much more on that really.

As for the rest of you I guess the record needs to be set straight a little. Wiki Moderation is a rather thankless job and the fine upstanding gentlemen who we call our Wiki Moderators get little to no thanks for their hard work and tremendous effort they put into approving or denying submissions, dealing with point glitchers and generally keeping the Wiki under control with the limited tools available to them. They are our unsung heroes who spend more time reading through proposed edits than they probably do expecting praise from you all.

I wasn't really familiar with his work (that I know of), but from his description, I would have a hard time sticking with this as well, especially assuming Mods get paid in good will and a sense of satisfaction for a job well done. I know the most frustrating thing about any job for me is having to find creative work-arounds in order to get what seem to be everyday things taken care of.
I don't know that I've ever felt the need to vent as much as he did all at once, but I can totally understand frustration growing to the point where it has to be let out. It seems like the folks who knew him are wishing well, so, FWIW, bon chance.

You know, you can step down from being moderator and just be a normal user.  There is no shame in it.  You would still be able to keep contact with others that you have met here on Giantbomb.  You wouldn't have to worry about the responsibility of being a moderator anymore, and you can just keep in contact with the friends you have made on this site.  There are some good perks about being a normal user.  If you don't like this idea Endogene, I understand.

I bid you a farewell, a successful life, and best of luck and wishes in all you do if you for sure want to leave.

As Hamz and MB have said, the position of Wiki Mod is definitely not a glamorous one.  We forum mods helped them out with Wiki submission when the site first launched and we all gained an appreciation for what they do.

People are writing about how they feel in response to how he feels.

I respect that the guy might have worked hard for something that meant a lot (im my opinion too much) to him but the way he did it was melodramatic, pretentious and depicted a superiority complex; which I believe he deserves to be called out on.

I think the people that join in with the maudlin melodrama make the community look like shit.

Pretty much this. I would no problem with this guy coming here and expressing his opinion but when he ends every three sentences with "My name is Endogene" and acts like he's some sort of Giant Bomb superhero, then this just gets stupid. I really have no interest in this dude and I doubt I would have even noticed that he's gone. Call me ungrateful but at the end of the day guys, it's a video game website....Obviously, this site is a lot more important to some other people than it is to me. I come here for the commentary of the guys who actually work here not for Endogene.

I understand your frusturation and you're right this site is not perfect, but if you think about it a year is not that much, just look at how big this site is already. It really is true the GB crew is a very small group of people running a massive site. I'm sure that eventually the sites major flaws will be adressed...patience is needed, businesses take time to develop and usually more than a year...

Take care and good luck, you will be missed... and i think it was a mistake leaving for this.

First BoG, now you, Endogene. You were a great contributor, and it sucks to see you go.

Well, that's backward ass logic; "I love this community website, and because some people are not making it as good as it can be, I am leaving the community that I love." To be honest, the community won't suffer that much without you, especially somebody as arrogant as you. Besides, the community is only what the community makes it. The 'founders' are too busy making kick ass editorial content for everybody to enjoy, instead of worrying about little tools that might make things easier on the wiki side of things. I love E-drama as much as the next guy, but this is pretty pathetic.

@StarFoxA: I think I see what you did there.... o.O

For the record folks we are not presently looking at bringing on any extra Moderators for the time being. So lets not turn this into a "dude make me a mod now!" topic. Let us discuss the subject at hand ;)
