@bombbandit: Any tipped profession can pay as little as $2.13 per hour by federal minimum wage law, no need to be off the books. If you don't make tips to cover the rest of the federal minimum (or local minimums if higher) the employer must make up the difference. Of course, if you're consistently not getting enough tips to make up for that minimum wage, you probably won't have a job.

That's really what some people don't understand about why we tip, its written into the rules that companies can pay their employees basically nothing as long as they're considered a tipped wage profession and the tips they earn get them to at least minimum wage. Its why restaurants frequently add in a 15-20% gratuity automatically on tables of 6 or more, because the waitstaff will be spending a lot of time at that table typically, and if they get stiffed on the tip it hurts the restaurant because that server will probably come up short of their minimum for the day otherwise.

I love the people who live here and refuse to tip on principal, you're not changing shit, just hurting someone trying to make a living, so congratulations on that.

Also, in many restaurants in the US, e.g., Outback Steakhouse, servers are required to tip other service members such as bussers or bartenders regardless of whether those service members helped or not and whether or not the servers received a tip from their tables. What this means is that whenever a table does not tip their server, the server loses money.

For the US, I won't argue that people are wrong for not tipping, because I see their side of the argument that it is not their responsibility. However, I think it is important for people who refuse to tip to know as much as possible what the consequences of that refusal are, because they will hopefully make a better informed choice for their own circumstances in light of these details .

A bit of a tangent but I just want to say that the way that tipping is handled here in America is dumb. Waiters (or really tip-based jobs in general) shouldn't be dependent on tips to make minimum wage, they should just get paid minimum wage to begin with. The way it is now, tipping might as well be mandatory since the waiters are dependent on it since they don't get paid enough. Also, most people end up tipping anyway, regardless of the service, so I feel it would be better to just add a mandatory service fee to the bill (kinda like how it's done in some European countries). As long as the employees are getting paid at least minimum wage (which still isn't great but it is better than what they got now as far as I'm concerned), I think this would be totally fine (and also make the costs more transparent for customers). I wouldn't call it "mandatory tipping" because that sounds like a contradiction to me. Tipping should be an optional thing done for exceptional service. I've heard the argument made that this could result in workers just trying to get away with minimum effort since they'll lack the motivation to work now but the way I see it, if you slack off too much in other jobs then people will complain and you'll probably get fired so why shouldn't it be the case here?

In the US, people who are employed by someone else have to make minimum wage. This includes people who make tips. If someone who is paid on tips makes less than a total of $7.25 an hour from hourly wage plus tips, the restaurant, pizza joint, etc. must compensate the difference.

However, servers, for example, who fail to claim enough tips to total the minimum wage may see their hours cut at work, because the business could choose to extend company time to those who cost the business the least amount to employ.

For me, FF7 will probably always be one of the best. It was my favorite for a long time. I played it when it was new, and I wish more people could have experienced it like that. It's hard for a lot of people having first played the game years after it was released to appreciate it the way that so many of its fans do , so I get why people who have only recently experienced FF7 don't always feel the praise is justified.

@TaliciaDragonsong: I was really taken aback when he gave it to me. In addition to that, he gave me this official Nintendo strategy guide from the first Final Fantasy.

It's divided into chapters and filled with artwork like a child's book. It's a neat slice into the history of video games. Shows how much in some ways the demographic focus has shifted from that time to now. I had this guide when I was a kid but lost it some time along the way. I guess I have mentioned how much I liked it when I was young, so he got the strat guide for me too.

@Maajin: Cool pic. These types of things are usually something that people will hopefully appreciate for a long time.

@ImmortalSaiyan: @PenguinDust: They are so often more special than something simply bought. For me, it's like getting a homemade card with a small, original poem or note inside. It's really not about the quality.

When my friends ask me what I want for Christmas, if they have a talent I often tell them that I want something original. This has led to multiple works of art from my friends. Here is the latest. I also didn't expect anything from him and certainly didn't know he would come up with Chie. He also composes music. I should ask for my own song next year! I will probably get a frame so that the picture stays nice.

Do you ever get gifts like artwork or have you ever given artwork as a gift?
