Wiki Editors: Please Stop Making Assumptions

I just had to make some updates to a new page on the site for inFAMOUS 2, which technically hasn't even been announced yet.

No Caption Provided
It's already dicey for us to even have an inFAMOUS 2 page, since it hasn't been confirmed, but since that Portuguese magazine has been so obvious with its next cover, we'll let that part slide.

But don't do this. Don't assume that a sequel is going to have the same traits as its predecessor. At best, you're making mistakes that will have to be corrected later. At worst, you're gaming the system for points and will end up losting a great deal more than you've fudged if you keep stuff like this up. Thanks.

I would think that users find Quest xp more important than wiki points. Anyways, will keep an eye out for it.

Fair enough, but it'd be hard to fault me for putting it in, given that pretty much every game does it, and they haven't made announcements otherwise.

Also, what about 3D or sequel :P?

What if a speculated video game sequel decides not to use health at all? It's possible.

I bet people do this just to game the system for points. Are people that willing to get the 5k? Kinda sad.

Weirdly enough, I just had to remove ModNation Racers from the LittleBigPlanet franchise list. People think it's easier to get away with adding concepts and games that aren't related.

The staff should write more blogs. I don't think you guys are taking advantage of the huge following you have accumulated from your awesome podcasts. I thought you encouraged stalkers? Clearly not enough...

like this idea, seems no matter how much we say this someones going to do it for those sweet wiki points that you can probably use to buy a car or something. Having pages for future games is on the ice as it is "
They could just require approval for all new game pages regardless of how many points you have. That would create a little more work for Dave maybe but the site would be a lot cleaner.

The problem seems to be making pages for games that are a forgone conclusion, sure, but have absolutely no info out on them. If you don't know a single thing about an upcoming game, it doesn't really need a page at all. Wait for a screenshot at least.

Dude, I gave up on trying to modify the Guitar Hero 6 page.  Some dude's squatting on it.  He has poor grammar, no sense of formatting, and doesn't understand the concept of speculation.  Oh, and I got all of 10 points for the effort.

I like this idea. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect some amount of source documentation for games that haven't been released yet and the game forum seems a logical place to do it. For games that are released, we already have documentation in the game itself -- anyone can pick it up and verify the wiki associations should they find them suspect. But for unreleased games, data verification is a bit more tenuous. Seems like a higher standard is in order for them, if we're going to keep the data accurate (and I think we should).

You don't have to provide sources for everything you submit. However if you still have to go though moderation (i.e. have less than 1000 points), it can be very helpful to leave a comment explaining where the information is from. Something as basic as "I read this on site X" and a link is fine. Or in the case you just know because you played the game "I know this because I played the game" will be great. We won't deny submissions for lacking a source, but a description of what you added and where you got the info from can be a great help to us and make the tedious job of moderating wiki submissions easier.

Yeah, there are definitely cases where the sequel differs from the predecessor. If this treatment were to be applied to the next Deus Ex for example, I'm sure it would be massively incorrect. Isn't Red Dead Redemption also pretty different from Revolver? For all we know you'll get fire powers in Infamous 2 or something. Until we know stuff like this, we shouldn't make those assumptions. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow associated with whip and Belmont, sure. Dracula, however, has not been confirmed yet, as far as I know.

@Mrskidders: It's hardly a case of providing links and such when to comes to cases like this; people are assuming that the game will include certain elements when, in fact, there's no official information on the game whatsoever, let alone an official announcement.

If you somehow came across legit info before anyone else, which I doubt would happen in the first place, you'd probably be best off making a post in the game's forum linking to that piece of info, which would help to avoid this type of incident.
