Having to read through a bunch of melodramatic text in a game this generation is exactly what would keep me from playing it. Now don't get me wrong, text still has its place in handheld RPGs, but for a high-budget game like, for example, Final Fantasy XIII to have text only would be absolutely ridiculous.
The better fix would be to either leave in Japanese voices with subtitles, or to get better English voice actors.
" I think all y'all are overreacting a little. If you actually read what he said its not exactly mind blowing or that far out of left field. Also, he says at least half a dozen times throughout the 3 paragraphs that he thinks SCII is a great game. I don't really agree with him but I don't all of you should be so quick to lynch him. "
Agreed. I bet the majority of people replying to this thread haven't even clicked the link, let alone bothered to read the article. If they had, they'd know that he doesn't consider SC2 a bad game by any means; he's just disappointed that Blizzard didn't make more drastic changes.
Likewise, his complaint about the writing in Alan Wake has been voiced by plenty others, including, I believe, some of the Giant Bomb staff.
I'm just going to say Mirror's Edge, except done better (not that I don't like that game).
Seriously, though, Ubisoft has already given us a good example on how this could work with Splinter Cell: Conviction. Sure, the traversal isn't as rich or varied in Conviction, but I think it does provide some good idea of how Assassin's Creed in modern times could work when it comes to combat. While I doubt we'll be seeing Desmond with a pistol (I hope not), some combination of flashbangs and throwing knives could work equally well.
I think people are over-thinking this way too much, focusing too strongly on the whole concept modern day weapons such as guns. There have been plenty of games where you outrun gun-toting enemies, while trying to avoid getting shot at.
And even if the game takes place in New York, I am certain that there are plenty of ways in which Assassin's Creed's parkour (free-running) system could work in such a setting.
And once again, the appeal of this is completely lost on me. I don't see anything done here that couldn't be done on a good map editor, with better end-results.
