Is there really a problem with Giant Bomb?

Didn't even notice this until jlrm01 pointed it out to me. I need to read my friends' blogs more often.

Seems a bit melodramatic. Although I do agree that staff priorities seem to be misplaced, his method just seems wrong to me. What's the point if you're not going to be here any more?

I myself have had only minor difficulties contacting staff about issues, but even then there's so much stuff that can't be handled through PMs. I once messaged Jeff for clarification on something and never got a response. But when I messaged Jeff and Brad about other things, I got quick responses. It does work sometimes, but it's inconsistent. Even Gia has tried and failed to contact Jeff.

Snide does have a point about the small staff of course. But that's why the mods should be given additional powers. And instead of unimportant stuff like trivia, achievement tracking, the "improved" image editor, battles, and other crap, the staff should be working on more important stuff. A revision and rollback system for the wiki. The ability to move topics to forums outside the main ones. More powers for wiki moderators. Those are things that should be priorities. Yes, there are other things that are constantly being requested, but these are the things that would most benefit the community. Not just on Giant Bomb, but on Comic Vine and Anime Vice as well.

I've been able to contact the staff on numerous occasions for clarification on issues as well.

Mods really need the ability to delete pages.

I disagree with Endo's move of abandoning ship, regardless of problems. But if there are problems, hopefully they will be fixed.

This is just my opinion but maybe GiantBomb is too awesome? I mean who would've thought that eight people (plus Drew) could put together such a great site. There's sites with loads more background and writing staff that aren't as good as GB. They've set a high standard and now they can't keep it at those levels for different aspects of the site because the site itself has grown beyond its makers. Not to mention running CV and AV as you stated.

I agree with giving the mods more powers but I wouldn't judge Team Whiskey Media too harshly.

Also I'm glad I waited and posted this here rather than that blog, it would've got lost in the page count I imagine, so good blog all around.

If there's one thing I can say it's that the pieces to a great website are there and that I'm willing to wait until they finally come together. To tell you the truth I'm one of the few users who wasn't an ex-Gamespoter, I was a dedicated MobyGames editor instead. The reason why I decided to jump ship is that I saw the potential for something great in this websites future, whereas MobyGames seemed like a site that was already set in stone and wasn't going anywhere. The site would be better if a lot of the things Endogene complained about and what you take issue to, I still keep coming back to site and am humbled everyday by the dedication the users on the site have regardless of this websites flaws.

In my honest opinion, I agree with Endogene mostly. The only two people that works for Giant Bomb that I completely respect for not only being an awesome person but actually talking to me about issues, or just joking around is Brad and Coonce. Those guys are fantastic. I messaged Jeff around 10 times, got a response once. The response just said "Yes," and I wanted him to answer something else and I had put it in that question, but no answer. I have gotten a response from Vinny but haven't gotten one ever since that time. Not a single response from Ryan. I've sent around 12-13 e-mails to the Bombcast, not a single one has been read on the podcast. Most have been serious questions that have a meaning too! It's just incredibly frustrating.

I've never quite understood why users continually hassle the Staff over Wiki specific issues when we have a dedicated team of Wiki Moderators at hand who not only are very approachable but also more informed, experienced and generally the authority when it comes to the Wiki. Contact them instead for an immediate and informed reply / response to your Wiki issues please :)

As for the site we're slowly evolving from small community who came here following Jeff to a wider audience, we're hitting the mainstream more and we're begining to see that when this occurs revision of old methods, stances and tools is needed. But all this takes time and all we ask is people stay patient and supportive with the Staff.

@Hamz: Hey, I'd love it if I could do that. But it seems most of the time the wiki mods have the same amount of knowledge as most other users, and everyone will have their own opinions. So I tried one time (and only one time) to get a more official response.

Plus wiki mods have limited power, and simply can't do certain things (deleting pages and releases; renaming objects, concepts, and locations). Sometimes those things pile up, and having duplicates sit around for over four months does not make for an ideal wiki editing experience. So when a staff member has created a duplicate, I'll contact that staff member about it so they can fix it. High-traffic pages like that are just going to cause more problems in the future if they're left around.

Even though there are issues that bug me about the way the site is handled, I have been very patient most of the time, and I really do appreciate the time and effort these guys put into the site. I just wish they'd give more attention to some things that really deserve it.

@LordAndrew: Fact - Wiki Mods = authority on Wiki related questions. Their word is law, it is not up for dispute, discussion or generally to be questioned. If they say do not create a page until they receive confirmation on something then you do not create the page. Just like the Forum Mods are the authority there the Wiki Mods are the go-too people for Wiki related questions.

I made a joke on one of Coonce's blog posts that everything works fine if you're a casual user like me. Maybe there was more to my joke than I imagined. I disagree with the way he left. A manifesto is no way to go. I also did not see many Wiki Mods come to his defense or ask him to stay or why he was doing what he was doing.

Does Giant Bomb have problems? Probably but doesn't everything and everyone have problems. I guess when you dig deep everyday into the Wiki side of the things you see the fray around the edges of a Giant Bomb.

When I think that Endogene won't be here when all those things LordAndrew mentions get fixed / improved it pisses me of, I must admit. And I think they will be fixed. Just need some patience. And that badass Python engineer, too. So I guess I'll use some Patience Shampoo (New Formula!)  I found at Wallmart, if I need it. Will it work? :P

I've never even tried contacting the staff (well, I contacted Snide once, but that was because he asked for info on an API-related thing I asked about, to help me better; I didn't know he loved bulleted lists... ^_^;). I bother Axersia a great deal, including a few times involving image mod tool situations I've found where there are no rules but I suspect a certain course of action is needed. I have to check first with a mod before I make a mistake and deny / approve something I shouldn't (so far he has agreed with what I was intending to do, but I never know for sure until I ask).

@Hamz: And I didn't create the page, because I never got a response. I would have only created the page if I got an official response saying I could.

If I would have asked a mod and they said it would probably be okay, then maybe I would have created the page, and then maybe I'd eventually learn that I shouldn't have. But then there would be a problem because the mods wouldn't be able to delete it, and I would have gotten points for a page that never should have existed. Which is why I didn't do it. So if I was going to contact the mods about it, the only mod response I'd accept is "No". If they gave any other response, I'd have to wait for them to get a response from the staff before going through with it. Because I don't want to cause problems by creating a page if there's a possibility that it would have to be deleted later.

And the specific case I wanted to know about pertained to Persona 4. I figured he'd know what I was referring to, and could give me a better response than a moderator who may not have played the game.

Of course, I have contacted moderators numerous times about a variety of things. Wiki issues, trivia issues, and just casual chat. But in very rare cases, there are times when I feel it would be best to go directly to the staff. Unfortunately that doesn't always yield any results at all.

I didn't know all of this was going down until I read your "Farewell Endogene" status message. He started his post very arrogantly ("I'm the 6th most important contributor to the site"? Oh come now Endogene, I expected better from you), and it was so over the top melodramatic that for a moment there I actually thought he was joking. But while I don't agree with the way he went about leaving the site, I certainly agree with all the points he brought up. I've been proposing ideas to the staff as well but they always seem to fall to deaf ears. Not even an explanation as to why they won't implement these ideas -- no replies at all.

For example, wiki mods absolutely need the ability to delete pages. People keep posting duplicates in the Delete/Combine forum, but no one -- and I do mean no one -- actually deletes them. The staff member that used to handle these cases hasn't shown his face since last August, and the duplicates have been piling up ever since. Now, I can fully understand not wanting to give a single user the rights to page deletion -- mod or not -- but this can easily be fixed by implementing a voting a system. Just create a system where a wiki mod can flag a page for deletion so it gets sent to a queue where 2 other wiki mods have to approve the removal of the page before it actually goes through. The duplicates would be gone in no time, and there's little to no chance of any accidents occurring.

Unfortunately, the staff seems to be dead-set on never giving wiki mods these privileges -- just like how they're dead-set on never removing the 2 consecutive post limit on profile walls. Coonce added this wall-to-wall feature at some point, but it's pretty fucking useless when you can only make 2 posts before you have to move to the PMs.

I'll be the first to admit that whenever I see a nifty new feature like Achievements support added in lieu of finally creating a proper collection system that we've been promised since launch month, I get pretty pissed (and when that new feature also goes on to BREAK the site for several weeks I get extremely pissed). This site's collection system is so crappy (oh for fucks sake, at least order them alphabetically) that I've had to resort to Backloggery.com to manage my collection database, and I've put so much time into it now that even if GB ever creates a collection system that rivals it, I simply can't be bothered transferring it. What does that mean? Well, less hits for GB of course, because that gives me less incentive to visit the site every day.

I personally planned to step down from my mod position as well for the same reasons as Endogene, and because I simply haven't felt as much passion for the site as I used to lately. I was gonna wait till July 30th (exactly a year after Brad gave me my mod powers), but I'll just go and shoot one of the staff members a PM right now. It'll probably do the site good if the staff hires some new wiki mods that are a bit more enthusiastic about doing their job. For me it was never about the fame, so there's no point in me trucking on just for that little "Moderator" title under my username on the forums (and hey, I was never a very active forum poster anyway). Unlike Endogene, however, I won't actually be leaving the site.

@Axersia: You know, when I noticed what Endogene did, I said to myself "Maybe Axersia will not be a mod anymore, either". ^_^; But you'll stay, like I wish Endogene did. Still... :(

Anyway, whatever is best for you. :)

Maybe you haven't put two and two together...but did you ever consider that one of the reasons why staff doesn't respond to messages is that too many people send them too many PM's about things they should not be?

The wiki mods are there for a reason. If they can't answer one of your questions, then they will find out and get back to you. Maybe you should have a little bit more faith in their abilities and dedication and start trusting them with these things, because the staff simply do not have time to deal with every little issue that pops up on a daily basis.

@MB: I have considered that, yeah. Considering that I'm one of the people who assaults Jeff with Persona 4 tips as well as just plain useless comments, it's no wonder he has trouble keeping up with the more serious comments.

I do have faith in our wiki mod team. I appreciate and respect the work they do, perhaps more than most people do. And I have contacted the mods on several occasions about various things, because I do trust them to do the right thing, or at leat find out what the right thing is. Unfortunately I've heard three different wiki mods (two here, one at Anime Vice) display dissatisfaction with the way things are handled. And that's not something that inspires confidence.

The only problem I'm having is communication. I was wondering why one of my requests didn't even pull through, and I had no idea the Mods have limited power here at the site. Or at least they should have just told me personally and that would've been the end of it.
