I think a lot of people are expecting the to be Skyrim if you want that level of depth go play that (or Dragon Age: Origins). People are expecting this game to be something it was clearly not meant to be, this game is what it is; Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. From the short time the demo gives you with the game I had a great experience. Combat is fun and responsive, I also found it quite challenging when there were more than a couple of enemies bashing me at once (could be I was playing it wrong). The art style is great, people complain that it looks like WoW. I think it looks like a Todd McFarlane comic.
For me the bad reception this game has received is indicative of a problem with the gaming community as a whole. People don't want new things and when a game veers from what people expect from a genre or when a new IP isn't enough like other IPs or is too much like another IP they crack the sads. It's this attitude that is causing a dearth of creativity and ingenuity in video games today.
