Are you ready for micro-transactions in Gran Turismo 6? Well Sony is!

This is the Puente Nuevo, or New Bridge, and that is a Ferrari. New meets...old?
This is the Puente Nuevo, or New Bridge, and that is a Ferrari. New meets...old?

Sony announced that Gran Turismo 6 will have micro-transactions. They did not give any information about how much these credits would cost in dollars or I guess I should say euros, since the announcement was made on the European PlayStation.Blog. This is what Sony had to say about the credits,

(F)rom launch at retail you’ll find a new option for building your ultimate fantasy car collection in-game credits will be purchasable through PS Store or your friendly local retailer at the following denominations: 500K, 1 million, 2.5 million or 7 million credits which you’ll be able to apply in-game for cars and parts. To know how much your credits will get you, take a look at the menu of choices. For 1 million credits you could get all the cars below.

No Caption Provided

Nobody is surprised that Sony is moving in this direction, especially considering how much money Forza makes on DLC and how well iRacing.com has been doing recently. Sony has been talking about doing this for years, so this shouldn't come as a surprise to anybody that they finally dropped the hammer. The real surprise will be whether GT players will fall into the DLC trap that catches so many of us with one game or another. We will all have to wait with bated breath to see how much they will be charging for these credits, and if their player base is willing to pay what they are asking. (Especially, when we keep in mind Patrick's great article about Skullgirls DLC.)

Along with this announcement, Sony announced that Gran Turismo 6 Standard Edition and Special Edition are available for pre-order on PSN. In the bulky Special Edition, you’ll get the full GT6 Game, 20 extra cars (Torque, Performance, Adrenaline and Velocity packs), custom PSN avatars, paint chips, race suits and race helmets. If you do choose to pre-order the game on PSN you will get the cars included in the Precision Pack for free as well.

These cars are:

  • GT-R NISMO GT3 15th Anniversary Edition
  • R8 LMS ultra 15th Anniversary Edition
  • Corvette Stingray (C7) 15th Anniversary Edition
  • Model S Signature Performance 15th Anniversary Edition
  • Viper GTS 15th Anniversary Edition
Precision Pack
Precision Pack

20 extra cars seems like a lot of cars, plus the five in the precision pack. This almost seems like it might be a season pass in disguise. If Sony is giving away 25 free cars for Special Edition purchasers, then it might be a little premature for people to freak out about their DLC plans.

I am pretty excited for Gran Turismo 6. I spent a good amount of time playing Gran Turismo 5. GT5 was a great game, but it did have some glaring flaws. I think, in the end, the amount of time that the game spent in development compared with the overall quality of the game leads me to believe that the game was probably an overall failure for Sony. Hopefully, GT6 will be a step back in the right direction for the GT series.

I'm actually not ready. GTA V's online mode is pretty fun but it is so incredibly geared towards micro transactions that it hurts. Making any sort of money is somewhat difficult unless you grind out races all day, and all the prices are insanely bloated. While in single player every paint color is $1500, in multiplayer the prices are on average $8000 per color with some colors costing as much as $17500, for just a simple paint job! So yah, sure you can earn all that money through in-game stuff at some measly rate, but it really blows that sometimes after a single visit to the mod shop to switch out some colors on my car I'll be $50,000 poorer.

So no, I'm still not ready for micro transactions in full retail products because I'm a person with a limited amount of gaming time on my hands.

As long it is optional I don't see any problem with it. IT is only problematic if Cars are behind this DLC wall not that ou can make it more easier to get these cars through buying virtual credits.

That is actually what they are doing here. Those credits that will be spent on the cars will be bought from Sony. You will be buying 1 million credits from them for $10 or $20. I'm not sure how much exactly because that information has not been announced.

Yeah, I'm not sure how many people are looking to spend serious money on, what now is, last generation hardware and software. I guess this is a great test bed for Sony to see if this kind of stuff might work in DriveClub or other games.

I've been amazing and appalled at the restrictions GTA:O continues to put on making money through actual gameplay. A race that used to net me $2000 is now $200. Mission earnings have been cut drastically and then are cut further if you play them more than once. Everything costs an exorbinant amount of money. I've stopped playing because I don't respect the game and that's a weird issue to have.

I've never felt tight on credits in any past game in the series, if people want to buy cars instead of learning to drive, it doesn't really affect me.

If they change the race payouts to make stuff like this mandatory, that would bother me, but there isn't any indication that they are planning on doing that.

I'm not even sure I'm going to buy 6, haven't heard enough about it, if it's just 5 with more cars and more tracks, I think I can wait till 7 comes out.

In terms of respecting the player it's really baffling how they continue to limit your revenue options through constant mission reward paycuts. From the business side though, in a really depressing way it makes perfect sense.

The problem is this is a full retail game, not some $20 byproduct, so I'm having a serious dilemma between how much I respect myself and how much I respect my free time - 'cause on one hand I could just buy the money from them and feel bad about caving in to a system that very deliberately funneled me into this exact situation, while on the other hand I simply don't have that much free time to grind out the money in a legitimate way.

The only real solution is to, much like yourself, stop playing. Although after having logged in over 70 hours into the online portion of the game, I can safely say that I've experienced everything that it has to offer. When they implement heists, lord only knows when, I will log back in and see how that works and most importantly how much they pay out. I wouldn't be surprised if an elaborate heist requiring a ton of preparation would net the entire team $50,000 that would then need to be split among all participants.

@humanity: It makes business sense the same way it made business sense to jack up the price of an umbrella to $300 in Roller Coaster Tycoon.

I'll probably see how the heists are too whenever they come out. I will not be spending a dollar though. I really hope this is Rockstars only foray into micro transactions.

I just can't support this kind of stuff. As soon as I hear about it being in a game I lose interest because I know they're always jammed in in a way that, no matter how much they say it doesn't, effects how everything operates in the game.

GT6 won't ever get my microtransaction dollars and merely for including them they aren't getting my $59.99.

everytime i hear of another example i feel a little bit sicker.

whether it affects me or not is beside the point. it can only have bad consequences, as unsupervised kids run riot with credit cards, leaving uninformed family members to foot the bill. next to that, what's the upside? the kid finishes the game? the kid has fun? microsoft makes more money?

Im ok with games that let people pay to progress faster or offer cosmetic items for a fee, so long as it doesn't negatively affect people who are trying to progress normally though a game by limiting in-game XP and payouts. And excuse me if im wrong, but aren't those pre-order/15th anniversary cars just cosmetic with maybe some tuning under the hood, and the regular versions still available for purchase with in-game credits in the retail versions? Im sure there will be DLC cars and tracks in the future, but i thought these car packs for GT6 where just to celebrate the anniversary.

Im still planing on waiting it out a little and seeing how much they have improved the game over GT5. The cars obviously handle better based on the demo, but if its still kinda boring and hasn't added fun modes to play around with the cars ill just skip 6 and wait till 7 to get my Gran Turismo fix.

@lego_my_eggo: I am not sure about the pre-order cars. It looks like the original Playstation.blog post, showed that you could purchase 1 million credits and in the picture above you can see that all of the cars are pretty standard fare.

I enjoyed GT5, but there were so many disappointments after playing both Forza 2 and Forza 3 that when you compare the games you can really see that in menu usability and online options Forza really wins overall. I am not sure if I will wait for GT7 or go ahead and buy GT6. But, like you, I'm gonna wait and see. Hell! I didn't buy GT5 until Spec II came out in Japan.

I think the biggest difference is also that it is very very easy o make money in GT6. At least to people on GTPlanet who already playing the game. Buying credit as an option is fine as long the normal game is not affected by it.

Forza 5 RMT is bending people over and fucking them up the ass.

Gran Tirusmo 6 RMT is offering people to buy in-game credits with their real money, while continuing what Gran Turismo games have done, like giving cars for winning races and cups, holidays, birthdays, challenges, license tests.

GT6 RMT is no deal at all.

This is extremely misleading. The $120 car comes from a very specific unique promotion, and comes with a few real-world goods as well (a water bottle, a hoodie, some other crap.)

Not saying it's a great deal, but let's be serious here.

Well, I remember grinding low level races for cash in GT1 back in 1997. GT has always been a grindy game, maybe five and now six will be even 'more grindy', but I don't know what else to say - it has always been a grindy game. For me, if I like the $60 game I'm always willing to spend another $10 for stuff I might want. And, I certainly pay for Elite or the Season Pass for CoD.

I say paid DLC sorts itself out. People either pay or they don't, when we don't that publisher/developers changes 'the way' method & costs. Yeah, it sucks when a game you like has a weird money scheme you don't like...but such is life. On the macro level DLC is now stuff we pay for and its not all that expensive. In the 8--bit, 16-bit, and 32/64-bit era there wasn't any extra content. A game either sucked or was good, and if it was good you waited for a sequal. In the 128-bit era we at least go more content on a few games, and now in the past gen we got tons of DLC. However, are we worse off for these extra paid content bits? I don't think we are on the balance.

Game prices have been $60 for three generations, but that $60 is now worth even less. So, of course, you're expected to buy $60 base games and $15 in DLC in some case. On the other hand now we have $15 and $30 indie games that are fun in their own right often complete w/o DLC. We even have 'memberships' like PS+ that give discounts and free games. So, yeah, I'm don't think gaming and the current cost structure is all that bad.

Not this game specifically, but in general, I don't mind microtransactions in future games to come as long as that individual game doesn't make it a requirement to have a full game experience. I believe Dead Space 3 did it perfectly. It was there, but it was completely unobtrusive to me. Let's take a fighting game for example, say if you have only a select few characters to play; then you have to pay money for more characters, and the price for that is over a regular priced, sixty dollar game, then I don't like that at all.

Dumb but whatever. Same way I feel about it in Forza. Wish it wasn't there but nothing I can do about it.

I do wonder though because my friend recently just "edited" his GT5 save file to give himself all the expensive cars or a ton of money or something and he said it was easy. Seeing as this is still on PS3 I don't see why this wouldn't work again unless they did some crazy thing to save files.

I'm still figuring out where I am on this. I have no problem paying more for content that's worth more to me. I think I do have a problem with microtransactions.

I've always considered the price fixing that console makers engage in to be a bad thing that had an impact on the quality of games available. It's obviously a lot more complex than that, but as a consumer, I have no problem with the idea that some games are worth more. I might be willing to pay $100 for Gran Turismo, I might not be willing to pay $20 for Sega Rally.

Because of that I've never had a problem with DLC. DLC seemed like a great way for them to get more money for more content and continue support for the game, and for me DLC is a simple question of whether the content is worth the price. I find it pretty annoying when people complain about DLC, acting like they're entitled to whatever content the developer can produce just because. I don't even have a problem with on disc DLC. They decide what they want to sell it for, we decide if we want to buy it, more content is on offer, the price-fixing issue is circumvented, and there doesn't have to be a big impact on game design. DLC lets them make more and sell it for more. Win/Win.

Microtransactions are a completely different story. First, it's not as clear what you are getting when you buy the game. Second, it has a serious detrimental impact on game design. Think of Forza where the reward cars are gone, reducing the excitement of progress and the variety of vehicles you'll be exposed to. Or GTA where all of the in-game prices and pay-outs are so out of whack. Or Diablo 3's auction houses. They increase the grind and decrease the rewards in an effort to get you to pay. It is LESS fun, and they want you to pay over and over again to buy the FUN when you already bought the game.

So I hate microtransactions, because they result in less fun games.

DLC feels like more content for more money. Microtransactions feel like manipulation. I think GTA V and Forza have taught me not to buy GTA and Forza anymore.

but its much much easier to get cars otherwise and you still win cars from Cups etc.

Eurogamer's Martin Robinson has been playing the game and tells me GT6's economy works exactly the same as GT5's, with progression, payouts and car prices very similar

That's like saying sales tax should go the way of the Dodo. As long as someone is profiting off of something it's not going away. If people pay $60 for a game and buy ONE microtransaction, the publisher sees that as money they wouldn't have gotten otherwise. As long as people keep buying into microtransactions they will keep adding them.

While we as consumers might think they suck, we are not the developer or publisher. They can and will do whatever they want for money. We as the consumer have to stop buying into it so they stop adding them.

Maybe I'll take out a fourth credit card just to use it for these transactions. I MUST OWN ALL THE THINGS FOR THESE GAMES!

We already knew Polyphony's racer would include microtransactions - a first for the series. Now we're nearing the game's Friday 6th December release more information on how these work has been revealed.

Let's start with the virtual currency, credits. Credits, which you use to buy cars and parts, can be bought in 500K, 1 million, 2.5 million and 7 million denominations.

The PlayStation Store updated today with the prices for these. They are as follows:

  • 500,000 In-Game Credits (£3.99/€4.99)
  • 1 Million In-Game Credits (£7.99/€9.99)
  • 2,500,000 In-Game Credits (£15.99/€19.99)
  • 7 Million In-Game Credits (£39.99/€49.99)

The video, below, showcases GT6's cars and reveals one of the top priced, the Jaguar XJ13, which costs 20 million credits. You can grind for it in traditional Gran Turismo fashion or you can buy it straight away if you drop £119.95 - that's the total you pay for two packs of 7m credits, two packs of 2.5m credits and one pack of 1m credits.

The issue is, will Gran Turismo's progression system be adversely affected by microtransactions? Eurogamer's Martin Robinson has been playing the game and tells me GT6's economy works exactly the same as GT5's, with progression, payouts and car prices very similar.

Sony maintains that GT6's microtransactions offer players an alternative fast-track route through the series' famously grindy progression. Eurogamer's review will be published on Friday.

buy this game used or don't buy it at all. Make sure to tell Polyphony that they're being gross on Twitter.

Hmmm but at the same time.. Maybe they should have this so they can milk every dollar from stupid people and then hire more people to create Premium cars faster.

Edit: Oh yea I did post in here before and already mentioned the save file editing thing so scratch this.

how is this gross? The way it is used in GT6 is as an option. You can not even buy Credits in the game itself but only in the store. The progression is as good as GT5 or some say even better in terms of earning money cars etc. I can totally understand if a game is build around these microtransactions but that is not what GT6 is.
