I was dead wrong about Dawn of war 2 ..

Now i consider myself  a die hard RTS player . The first game i played were Dune 2 on the Amiga . I have played every command and conquer game made . From there humble beggings with Westwood studios to EA . Games like Empire earth , Rise of nations , Warcraft (starcraft not so much) , Age of empires etc i have played and loved them all .

The William Wallace campaign on age of empires 2 was fucking awesome)

Anyone else remember this game ?
Anyone else remember this game ?

Never really got into this game .
Never really got into this game .

Now when Dawn of war came out in 2004 i immediately got it . It was what i craved as at that point i was into the table top game as well . It combined a cool but simple combat and resource system which was easy to get into and meant less time thinking about resources and more time killing . It was a fairly traditional RTS with base building etc . I continually played that game for about 3-4 years since . Then i discovered company of heroes . Made by the same people i knew i was going to like it and i did .

More based on combat this was a good step with RTS
More based on combat this was a good step with RTS

 Such a good game .
 Such a good game .

It was much harder than Dow but it was much more rewarding . The whole cover system was something that was kind of built into DOW but now properly like in this game . units would move to cover themselves to get out of the line of fire etc.

Anyway back on track . When i heard about DOW 2 being developed i immediately  bought a new computer . I eagerly awaited the game . When the demo came out i was so excited i remember i couldn't wait for it to downlaod . But when i finally got on the game ....no....base...building .....

I not going to lie i was massively disappointed . I didn't even finish playing the rest of the game and deleted it from steam and never touched the game again ...until the steam Xmas sale .. For a XMas present for my friend i got him the THQ pack . (He had got a new gaming laptop so i thought I'd get him some games to play ) In the pack was DOW 2 . Now my other mate who i always play with online got DOW 2 also . SO they persuaded me to give it a shot . SO i did . And OMG ....its so much better than i expected . I mean as a traditional RTS fan i was put of by the lack of base building but i really think the series took a turn for the better . I take back every bad thing i said about the game in my previous posts on these forums . Its a great game which i have not really been able to put down since i got it .

Sorry for the wall of text just thought i would share this with you .

Downloaded the THQ pack, haven't gotten to these yet. I'll play COH and DOW first, then DOW II. I tend to favor base building in my RTS. Played some WWII RTS back in the day that lacked any base building and I hated it. Then again... I was like 12. And yeah, man... Age of Empires I and II were fucking amazing.

They kinda messed it up with DoW2. From what I heard anyway. While it's not a bad game, it doesn't really do the DoW series much justice. I'll stick to my CoH any day, which I still play a lot recently. Just out of curiosity, what do you think of turn-based strategy games?

I partook in the Dawn of War 2 MP Beta on Steam. I didn't like it much. I think it was mostly the gameplay that I was adverse to, but the setting didn't appeal to me either. :\

World in conflict is the most underated RTS game of all time. It was awesome gameplay, addicting multiplayer, and an amazingly epic story that really hit home, and showed you why people like Regan and Carter fought to keep the Cold War a "Cold" war.

DOW II is a great game, but I never really got into the Multiplayer. I didn't give it enough of a try.

@turbomonkey138: Good that you can admit you were wrong, most people would never get that far haha. I am in the same boat as you, although you are presumably older than me (being 19), my first rts was age of empires I believe.. actually maybe battleship haha.

AoE2 was awesome =P

And yes, Dawn of War 2 and company of heroes totally threw me off with the lack of base building, but in the end it feels more refined and simplified, but still keeping all that depth.. Of course I still wouldn't mind some base building =P

I can relate in some ways.  Big fan of company of heroes but I never played Dow 1 myself so there was no past connection or any anticipation other than it being a relic game.  Same as you Dow 2 massively dissapointed me and I never played it again after the demo.

The THQ sale oddly enough made me think about giving it a try, I heard the new mode of waves of guys coming at you was fun (forget the name).

Welcome to the dark side. I'm glad those base building sims masquerading as RTS games have finally taken a break.

Having started with DOW2, it is difficult as hell getting into the first DOW series.

I have COH waiting to be downloaded, but I haven't been in the mood for RTS lately.

@turbomonkey138: I'm happy you rediscovered the joyment of Dow2. A lot of my friends don't play the multilayer for some reason, and I tell them that's where most of the fun is. But no one listens to me. I can't wait for the expansion. I never played CoH but I too got the THQ pack and I'll download it once I get around to it.

I loved DoW, I still love CoH (I play Ami, Brit, Wehr on ranked matches), but DoW2 was...

Too small, I guess. The scale was reduced from CoH a bit, and I just couldn't get into it. Other factors too, obviously. It felt a bit too similar to CoH, but at the same time it didn't seem to hook me in the same way that CoH continues too do to this day.

I picked these up in the THQ pack this past weekend and I can't wait to play them, however I am current addicted to Titan Quest, so I don't think it will be for a while.  I plan to start with DoW1 and later move to DoW2.  I started on old C&C titles so I need all that minutia normally associated with traditional RTS games.

I probably should have picked up that THQ pack, but all I really wanted were the Dawn of War games (I have most of the others).

I want to play it, too, as I prefer my RTS games without obnoxious basebuilding - the Myth games are still the high point of no-base RTS for me.

what i like about DoW2 is that it gives you the feeling that every unit counts and the lack of base building makes you focus much more on your battle stratergy.

I love all these RTS games. Company of Heroes, World in Conflict, DOW I (haven't gotten too far into DOW 2 yet), the Age series (don't forget Mythology!)

I'm surprised there isn't as much love for Supreme Commander anymore! Sure, it could be needlessly complicated, take way too long to finish missions, etc, but that's actually kinda why I love it. There's nothing like rolling across a huge map with a soul-numbingly huge army and just laying waste to everything in your path of destruction.

Obama should seriously scrap everything in Afganistan and Iraq in favor of funding research into mammoth robots that turn into nukes when they die. That'd be taxpayer money well spent!

When I moved from Dow1 to Dow2 I immediately liked it; it was based on smart tactical combat rather than gimmicks like dancing and "lulz I used jump units to invade your base in the first 15 seconds of the game you lose" . Glad to hear you like it and maybe we can have a game sometime. I promise I won't whoop you too hard ;)

Nice blog, I know I've come across this a lot later than when it was originally written but it still stands true. I do like DoW II but I, like you, was immediately disappointed with the lack of base building. It does make up for it and is a good game but I think I prefer Company of Heroes over DoW II. I am also a StarCraft fan, I have enjoyed the Age of Empires and Command & Conquer series, up until recently. Both of them took a turn for the worse with their recent releases in my opinion. Rise of Nations is a brilliant game, and someone above me on the comments said something about World in Conflict, also a brilliant game. Even with the lack of base building.
