Time to grow up (blog post).

  Well GB,

I'm a Mechanical Engineering major, so mind my grammar, and i've just been offered a job at Kimberly-Clark, (they make Kleenex, Depends, Scott Rolls and other tissue products). Somehow i've just realized this is the end of me being a kid, i have to grow up and go out into the world on my own. I accepted the job, but i really don't want to leave college. School is all i've known for 23 years of my life, and the thought of leaving it is terrifying. I graduate this semester, but i don't want to, i will have to say goodbye to all my friends and even worse my girlfriend of 2 years.

I can't really vent to my friends like this because it makes me really depressed, so i thought i would blog about it. I realize most of you are younger than me and don't have to deal with life changing decisions. But man this really sucks ass i have to break up with the girl i thought i would marry and i have to leave some of my best friends just because i'm graduating.

Giantbomb, growing up sucks. Make sure you take full advantage of being a kid in school, go crazy because once it's over it's over and you will regret not doing all the things you could have.

Yeah, I'm in college and working right now. That doesn't stop me from eating raman noodles and playing Darksiders after dark, while my roommate raids in WoW across the room. Life doesn't HAVE to suck as soon as you move out.

As a 21 year old child, I will say that the one thing I want more than anything else is my adulthood. What are the prerequisites for being an adult? A career and a place to live. It sounds like you've just come to that crossroads yourself, and I congratulate you. It is my ambition that I will be in your shoes in a year or so. Good luck, and all the best.

Not that I have any precedent for it, but I disagree. I feel that if two people love each other and are willing to be patient and put in an equal amount of work and effort, they can get through pretty much anything, whether it's getting through a tragedy or surviving the lack of physical contact that comes standard with a LDR. But if it's that time where you are on separate pages, then yeah, it's best to end it.

Ok sorry for that detour into Yahoo Answers territory. Congrats on the job, duder. It's a harsh economy/world out there right now, and I'm glad that you have something lined up already. I agree with your sentiments about living life before it's too late, but I never actually take that word to heart. I think I should. Maybe I'd be a happier person as a result.

Relocating is what your bummed about dude, Nothing else is changing.
You'll be going to work everyday instead of going to school but once you leave for the day, Well what happens then is all up to you. The only real difference is you'll be getting a paycheck, Which means more money to do what you want to do.

@VinceNotVance:
No, He's right long distance relationships don't work. 99% of the time anyway.
At some point one of you will cheat on the other and it will spiral down to hell, IMO.

@zombie2011: Awww, do you have to compare yourself to others to hopefully feel better about yourself? I think you need a hug before you start your 9-5, then one in about 10 years and a third during your midlife crisis. Those hugs are free of charge, just because you're so sexy.

Nobody wants to actually make a move. No one wants to change their everyday life. Remember your first day of kindergarten? Of highschool? It's even tougher when it's something as big as this.
 @zombie2011:
The worst thing anyone in your situation can do is stay where you are. You're making the right move.

Yes, growing up does suck. Do you know what sucks more than that? College. I'd rather grow up then be here studying all the time. Elementary school is where its at.

Long distance relationships can work, just not for everyone. I think people are entitled to feel that such things won't work for them, and thus not bother trying such a thing themselves. But assuming they don't work at all is silly and rather ignorant.

Best wishes to you after graduation, thread-starter. Hopefully the new job is one you really enjoy.

You don't need to grow up.

You can still do everything you wanted to do when you were young.

Even have sex with under age girls!

As long as you have complete control of your life, you can do anything.
You can still be with your girlfriend, you can still be in contact with friends.

If anything, you should strive to put yourself in a position where you can continue to educate yourself and do all the things you want to do.

You may be depressed because you're leaving friends, your girlfriend, and school behind but at least you have a job.  When I left home to go to the military I wasn't worried about leaving anyone. I thought I had friends but I was wrong, so leaving that behind was no problem. Yes, growing up is scary stuff but don't let life get you down when doors have been opened for you. Who knows, maybe you and your girlfriend can keep your relationship intact, maybe she can move down to NC with you. The way I see it is, don't let little things get in the way of the big picture. If your girl can't go to NC then give the long distance relationship a try; this will put your love to the test. If things go sour then it wasn't meant to be. Just make every moment you have left with your friends and girlfriend the best in your life.

Yeah, but just go whale riding to get the sadness out of your system  :-)
Shit, I hope that didn't sound mean  ............ damn text.

We all have to move on with our lives at some point and it is never easy.  Myself, I am starting to come to terms that my daughter, who just turned 17, starts university next year (or goes overseas) and she is no longer my "kid".  We all grow and it is never easy, but standing still is a much worse option.  You will look back one day and know whether your choices were good or not.  On the surface, yours sounds like a good decision.  Embrace it positively and I don't doubt for a second you will be successful and happy.

Good luck, but remember, growing up doesn't mean you stop having fun.  That is a choice.

@zombie2011: I'd give the relationship a try man. I've been with my girl for over 3 years and in that time I spent 8 months in Egypt ( We live in UK) and I'm about to go to France for 3 months, maybe more.

What is she doing at uni? How long till she graduates? Because you're walking into a good job and there's no reason why she can't move down when she's done. If she's only got a year, and her degree is flexible, she could come down after that time and try and get a job there. If you really love the girl then a little effort and sacrifice has to put in, not just give up so easily.

I did and got a couple offers, however the locations of the jobs were horrible. They were in rural area's of Ohio where there is nothing going on at all, no place for someone in their early 20's. Also K-C is huge company so i'll have tons of opportunity's down the line, plus NC is like a tropical paradise compared to Ohio.

I agree that it can work, too, but as someone who's been there and done it (for far too long), I think distance, no matter how much two people love one another, is dangerous if it's not a short amount of time. That said, everyone is different so who knows what works for who!

I'm with Coombs, though. I don't think I'd personally ever get into a distance thing ever again.

That's the thing about the internet, Skype, Facebook, Myspace, Twitter...et al. You don't really have to start a new life anymore.  ;)  Seriously though, your dilemma is a serious issue for college graduates. I'm getting my Ph.D and I'm terrified of finishing my diss. Because... what then?

zombie2011, never grow up. "Growing up" is a goofy transition enforced by people who want you to go through the hardships they did.  Get older, mature, learn new things, get new friends, have experiences, but never grow up.

Congrats on the job! And take it from me: jobs right now are scarce, but there will always be girlfriends.

I agree. From what i've gathered the most that is necessary is resolve. If you have the will to resist the temptations that surround you, and both desire to make the relationship work, it can work. The problem is that it is very hard to achieve and harder to maintain that. But it is possible. Just unforgivingly hard, since is bound by each person's expectations and fickle emotions.

Unless is an incredible, dream job you don't think will ever arise again I'd say stick with your girlfriend. If you really love her, I mean you talk about thinking she'd be your wife? I'd say that's worth sticking with her and getting a crappy (but tolerable) job, just temporarily until something good shows up closer to home, which it's bound to! The most important thing is you've got your qualification, the world's your oyster and there's no need to rush into anything.

People say LDR's never work because they're sure that without constant physical contact and proximity either  their partner will cheat or they will, ie, it's just a form of insecurity.

If you really love this girl either propose now and or find a way to make it work. If she isn't worth trying to make a LDR work then she wasn't worth marrying anyway, so don't fret too much about it.

I disagree.  I have a lot more fun now that I have disposable income.  I could never have gone to Hawaii or Peru when I was younger, unless my parents paid my way.

It's good to have money, but at the risk of sounding sappy emotional wealth is a lot more fulfilling. Decent money to travel etc. can always come later, he's only 22!

Wow this reminds me of my own position, I'm in my final year in uni and all I know is academic work. I don't want to live in the real world, so hopefully I'll become a researcher soon!
