Quick Look: BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger

Wow, first real negative comments i've heard about this game from anywhere in this QL. And knocking the art style? I'm surprised, i thought the bomb would be more into this.
Plus knocking an incomprehensible story line in a fighting game? That's like knocking an FPS for using guns ffs. It comes hand in hand. Maybe they know some deep meaningful backstory for fighting games..... like soul calibur... or tekken.... or.... wait i'm seeing a pattern. They're all incomprehensible or just downright retarded!

Well the Harry Potter QL was still hilarious at least.

.The fighting is NOT complex. If you are THAT dumb that a game this simple confuses you, then A) look in the manual B) pop in the tutorial DVD. The game I suggest should be started on the story mode. Beat it with every character at least once, and you should get a great bearing on not only how to fight, but what the game is about.

I love Guilty Gear, but it's one of the least accessible games ever made and this game looks to continue that proud tradition. If you have to go online and watch expert players to even become COMPETENT, maybe the game is just too impeneratrable.

I don't see what so hard for you guys to understand. They even said in the quick look that this game isn't for them and they don't understand it, they never called it a bad game. And this wasn't a bad quick look.

Quick looks are best when they get GB guy's fresh reactions to the game. These aren't reviews, and I seriously doubt jeff is going to give a low score because its something obviously not for him.

Im pretty sure jeff gave plenty of reasons why this game is hard for him to understand. Those same reasons would make it even harder for people who aren't into fighting games to be able to enjoy this. I can't believe you went on to say :

dude come on, this game is for fans of guilty gear, those are the only people that are going to understand(what there is to actually understand) and really enjoy this game.

And if it takes 20 hours for a person to get any enjoyment out of a game, that person has no reason to play that game. That is one of the sadest ideas that is floating around in internet land these days.

I dont want to read Jeffs review on this game. It will just be shallow and ignorant like all his others.

This seems like the fighting game for me, one that is crazy.

But its weird...i dont seem to be ever interested in a fighting game unless it has tons and tons of characters.

This damn tiny cellphone! I love BlazBlue, but I can definitely still find tons of humor in this game. Lighten up people.

See all these comments below from killjoy fighting game fans who wet themselves any time someone doesn't like their games? That's why I don't waste my time playing these games at all, much less online. No bigger drag in gaming than the 2D fighting game crowd and their need to treat playing games like they're studying for a doctorate. Use all that spare time -- and it's clear you have quite a bit of it -- to do something useful.

So is the story in this self contained? It's not a sequel or anything right?

Sometimes a game that you like is not actually good. Sometimes you can be wrong about thinking a game is good, or you can be wrong at thinking that a game has wide appeal. You need to be able to accept that people can disagree with you in real life without you presuming that they are evil, stupid, or lying. If you only like reviewers who allways agree with your viewpoint, then actually you dont like reviews. You just want to hear someone reinforce what you already believe. "

Why does everything turn to into a discussion?

If they do this quick look when they've played 20 hours of the game, there'd be no point in doing it, to find that much game time would take a while, and during those weeks those that are going to buy the game would have bought it, at least this way, those that are going to buy the game can see that it's the game they play, those that are looking for a crazy fighter can see it's for them, I don't think the comments made by Ryan and Jeff put people of games, if they are than the people who are put of by the comments are idiots for believeing someone who's not played much of the game.

This quick look is perfect for anybody who is totally unfamiliar with the game, this is exactly the sort of experience you'll have.  If it looks cool to you, this will make you want to check it out more.  Quick Looks are not reviews.

having played neither street fighet IV or blazblue, i'd be more interested in playing blazblue, i thought it looked pretty awesome.

Surprising,  coming from me... I buy every 2D fighter....
I even tracked down a copy of Battle Fantasia and enjoyed it...

Is Rebel 1 supposed to be Round 1? Cause I didn't see any Rebels in the game. No Rebel Alliance to be found. Just anime characters fighting. So no Rebel 1 or Rebel 2. Maybe Rebel translates as Round somehow. Maybe.

Isn't it kinda weird how the whole game graphic changes when they do a special move? Like, the background turns from the regular landscape behind the characters into some sorta deviantart wallpaper, with lots of blue chains floating in the air for no reason. It was pretty silly. Hmmm, maybe that's why the game's called BlazeBlue? Because when you do a special attack, the background turns into a blaze of blue colors? Is that it?

And the cutscenes... lol. WTF was going on? Kinda lazy animation, don't you think? They seemed to be using the Ken Burns technique of still pictures with a lot of camera zooming and panning across. Though honestly, I would rather watch a Ken Burns documentary. At least then, I could learn some interesting facts about the national parks, or the Civil War, or baseball. Here... it was just a bunch of nonsense about some scientific experiment gone awry. Kinda made me think of Black Mesa. Like, was Gordon Freeman somewhere in the background making a mess of things again? Did he unleash the seinry and cause the shitstorm?

Then somehow something inside a satellite shot a laser beam. Was that supposed to be the Calamity Trigger? Is that what the game is about? Cause a giant laser beam's pretty calamitious, alright. Disastrous, but also calamitious. Explosions caused by laser beams from satellites are indeed a calamity. When they're triggered. With a trigger.

Of course, I'm not sure what a scientific experiment and satellites shooting lasers has to do with a fighting game. At all. Cause aren't fighting games about two guys fighting in a side scrolly manner? What does some science hole inside a base have to do with that?

This looks pretty cool.

The character design for all the characters in this game represents everything I hate about Japanese character design. Extremely effeminate male characters, overly-sexualized female characters, and over-designed costumes with belts and zippers fucking everywhere.

Probably a pass for me.

I'm not sure what Jeff means about the drawing looking bad, it seems fine to me, but I have to agree with him on the particular anime art style it has and the design concepts.  They look pretty ugly for me, much less appealing than the Guilty Gear art.

It's frustrating that Jeff will like ANYTHING to do with MK and SF; yet can never understand why anyone would like any of the other fighters (aka BlazBlue and SC).

OMG, as a writer, like I do it for a living, this game makes me want to shoot my nuts off with a crossbow and then stick my face on a hot oven top. Worst story EVAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
