Cool that they had to patience to do this game. Maybe some Sands of Destruction up next? That's some turn based RPG action that isn't nearly as complex as this...

There's no time for this... there is only time to sit and salivate over Mass Effect 2.

Also, that monster Morpho (@5:00) is a fucking Caterpie, there's no way around it.

I remember enjoying Golden Sun on GBA many years ago.  I, like Ryan, would not be the person you'd expect to be playing something like that.  That should speak to how good that game(s) were.

You hate JRPGs - so do I apparently these days. Used to love the old FFs but the lack of any real innovation in the genre has killed it for me - Bioware and Western RPG developers are more to my taste these days

@Vitor: The weird thing is I LOVED the Persona 4 endurance run, I think Persona 4 is one of the best games ever. But I just can't bring myself to play any MMORPG, RPG or JRPG. Too much commitment and time investment and too many god damn choices!

I also like my games as linear as possible because I'm kind of a completionist. Maybe that's also why I loved Persona 4, because even though it's a JRPG, in the end no matter what choices you made you'll probably end up having the same experience I did when I played it for example.

Basically, I want linear RPGs with minimal character customization, auto leveling up, no random battle encounters, and no multiple endings or game changing decisions (in other words: minimal replayability). For some reason most RPGs nowadays are heading in the exact opposite direction.

Glad they did a QL of this, I was thinking about picking it up. Looks like my sort of thing, but battles seem like they may be a little too slow.

Remember that time Jeff and Vinny played Persona for a billion hours? No? Oh nevermind then.
Seriously, vapid shit like this is equal to me going into the Divinity II QL and saying "yep all WRPGs suck". That would be pretty stupid of me, right?

Golden Sun was badass, as was its sequel. I hope Golden Sun DS turns out to be good; it would be a shame if it wasn't.

As for this game, I'm not really feeling it. I'm pretty much over random encounters, now. I think FF9, and Sands of Destruction may be the lone exceptions (although, Sands of Destruction's encounter rate will soon drive me insane and force me to use a cheat to turn off random encounters from time to time). I like when JRPG's have symbols that represent battles, that I can avoid if I want.

RE your Divinity comment, that's very true.

And one of my favourite games of this gen was Demon's Souls (not technically a JRPG but definitely a Japanese RPG if you get the difference) but generally speaking, I meant games that rip on the old FF formula with little to no variation. And you can't really argue against the fact that as a whole, Japanese devs tend to play it really safe with the JRPG genre.

Haven't seen the Endurance run - funnily enough, I haven't played Persona 4 due to the time commitment it would inevitably bring and haven't watch that video series for the same reason. I'm sure there are exceptions to the rule but on the whole, WRPGs just do more for me these days - as I said, they appeal more to my tastes at the moment.

The Golden Sun games were made by Camelot, not Intelligent Systems. But they are making a Golden Sun DS game, which is supposed to come out sometime this year.

Nice to see you guys expanded the screen size on DS videos. I understand why you didn't before; it looks a little odd with the DS shell cut-off, but the importance of being able to read the text and understand the game better outweighs the aesthetics of the video accoutrements.

Well saying that this game is vapid shit is pretty unfair to. You can't really get a proper view of the game just from watching 20 minutes of random battles. That way you won't find a single good JRPG on the DS or any other portable system. Even mentioned Golden Sun would have looked terrible if you showed it like that.

Also Caterpie. What the fuck is it doing in Grece.

Maybe the volume is just too low, but to me that woods overworld music sounds a little bit too much like the "Dear to the Heart" music from FF7. I'm pretty sure the harp is playing the exact same scale before it goes into the higher key.

Final Fantasy 12 innovated quite a bit, but appearently people hate innovation.  I loved it and couldn't care less about standard JRPGs.

To be fair, I loved the Endurance Run, but I thought it was clear that the JRPG gameplay parts were far and away the worst parts of P4.

I don't think there are any Glory of Heracles games on the Game Boy, Brad. But I'm no Japanese man so I could be wrong. Also, technically, Glory of Heracles 3 was released on the Virtual Console so it's not actually the first western audiences have seen of this.

Not that any of this matters anyway because this is just another generic DS JRPG.

The DS and its games may be selling like crazy, but in the end I'm pretty sure that these kind of games, i.e. with random battles, are getting more and more anachronistic.

Good games are supposed to empower the player, not remove control from what he's doing, which is what happens with a random encounter mechanic.

I think JRPGs, at least in their current form, is a dying genre, but in its sunset it still casts glowing lights before vanishing.

Heh, I can only imagine Jeff yelling across the room that Ryan should totally join Brad in looking at an DS anime game. Then Ryan flashes the middle finger and comes over anyway.

The sprites on the top screen don't look that great. They're a little smeary. It's a shame we didn't get to see any story.

This looks alright, I like my old school RPGs so I might give it a shot. They're obviously still getting tutorialized left and right here but the combat looks like it could get pretty deep. Combat log is a nice touch.
I'm also sorta surprised I've never heard of this series at all, given it's been around since the 80s... They must be doing something right, right?

I thought it suffered from the 'everyone can do everything' complex balance wise, although I'm told that the special edition (only released in Japan of course...) fixes this by giving characters classes. IMHO, RPG characters need to have specific roles in combat, otherwise they turn into gods and the game becomes super easy.  FF6 and FF7 suffered from this somewhat as well, but those games had good stories with interesting characters. About the only thing interesting in FF12 was Balthier.

That's some sweet animations, but this game looks way to dense for me. Also I think the "D" is Denar (dinar?) at least that's what the money was called in Hercules: The Legendary Journies. I can only imagine that was the influence to this game. >.>

Uh, no.

The combat in Persona 4 was excellent. It forced the player to think about his moves(something JRPG's, sadly ,often don't have)  and had a  buffing system which actually didn't suck. Status ailments weren't a joke in this game and insta-death spells weren't a 0.001% chance at victory.

Unlike most JRPG's you had to watch your weaknesses and prepare beforehand, because, if you're not careful in Persona: you'll die pretty quickly.  Even normal enemy encounters could easily mean your death if you just pressed the triangle button. A rush button in a Final Fantasy game would make any player input obsolete. You would just have to occaisonly turn it of to heal someone up and that would be it.

Furthermore, Persona 4 does away with one of the worst things in Jrpgs: Grinding. Never. Not once in Persona 4's duration are you forced to grind. The experience in the game scales so you can never be too high or too low leveled. As long as you don't actively avoid enemies you will never be underleveled.

......Which is why I got really frustrated when Jeff and Vinny decided to waste 2+ hours of playtime multiple times, fighting shitty ass weak enemies who gave crap XP, by going through the previous dungeon. Even though the commenters were yelling not to. And when they noticed the current dungeon gave them 10x the XP
they  lost the will to fight enemies there, and thus started avoiding encounters in the current dungeon.............................which at the end leaves them lover leveled then they would be if they just played the game like any normal person would.   Too bad they forgot each time they finished a  dungeon and would do the exact same thing over and over.

Worst of all is that they whined about the game being ''grindy'' while bashing P4's equilevent of a MMORPG rat
over the head a million times with a party that has the combat ability of a level 60 nightelf

Just for reference: my playtime on P4 was 65 hours. This includes doing all 50 sidequests, maxing allmost all social links, actually exploring the town and talking to the villagers and letting the voiceactors finish talking beforepressing X

And P4 was a  very well received title ,going by Metacritic and its ilk. So I'd say :no it ain't clear.

I actually picked this up, and I'm looking to dig into it once I'm done with Sands of Destruction, the other big DS RPG to hit this month.  I'm not sure how the plot in Glory of Heracles will pan out, but damn, that's some fun-looking combat.
