Man, this would be freaking awesome with no random encounters.  What's wrong with having baddies on the map?

looks surprisingly cool for a game i've barely ever heard of. the art and animations are especially nice. but the random encounter rate is way too high for me.

be fair, I loved the Endurance Run, but I thought it was clear that the JRPG gameplay parts were far and away the worst parts of P4. "

Uh, no.   The combat in Persona 4 was excellent. It forced the player to think about his moves(something JRPG's, sadly ,often don't have)  and had a  buffing system which actually didn't suck. Status ailments weren't a joke in this game and insta-death spells weren't a 0.001% chance at victory.   Unlike most JRPG's you had to watch your weaknesses and prepare beforehand, because, if you're not careful in Persona: you'll die pretty quickly.  Even normal enemy encounters could easily mean your death if you just pressed the triangle button. A rush button in a Final Fantasy game would make any player input obsolete. You would just have to occaisonly turn it of to heal someone up and that would be it.  Furthermore, Persona 4 does away with one of the worst things in Jrpgs: Grinding. Never. Not once in Persona 4's duration are you forced to grind. The experience in the game scales so you can never be too high or too low leveled. As long as you don't actively avoid enemies you will never be underleveled.    ......Which is why I got really frustrated when Jeff and Vinny decided to waste 2+ hours of playtime multiple times, fighting shitty ass weak enemies who gave crap XP, by going through the previous dungeon. Even though the commenters were yelling not to. And when they noticed the current dungeon gave them 10x the XP they  lost the will to fight enemies there, and thus started avoiding encounters in the current dungeon.............................which at the end leaves them lover leveled then they would be if they just played the game like any normal person would.   Too bad they forgot each time they finished a  dungeon and would do the exact same thing over and over. Worst of all is that they whined about the game being ''grindy'' while bashing P4's equilevent of a MMORPG rat over the head a million times with a party that has the combat ability of a level 60 nightelf  Just for reference: my playtime on P4 was 65 hours. This includes doing all 50 sidequests, maxing allmost all social links, actually exploring the town and talking to the villagers and letting the voiceactors finish talking beforepressing X   And P4 was a  very well received title ,going by Metacritic and its ilk. So I'd say :no it ain't clear. "
Do you honestly think you convinced him of anything with your diatribe? He doesn't like JRPGs. Let it go, it's a lost cause.

You hate JRPGs - so do I apparently these days. Used to love the old FFs but the lack of any real innovation in the genre has killed it for me - Bioware and Western RPG developers are more to my taste these days

"
Remember that time Jeff and Vinny played Persona for a billion hours? No? Oh nevermind then. "
Wait... what does that have to do with them not liking JRPGs? Just because Jeff and Vinny liked Persona 4 doesnt mean that Sin and Vitor are going to magically change their opinion. Dull argument point you have there sir.

Looks like it could be fun to me, showing the DS and PSP really remain the bastion of RPGs these days.   Looks pretty decent gameplay wise, and i like the dense mechanics of the combat.  I just hope the story holds up, cause that's really what I look for in my RPGs.

Not surprised to see the 'everything japanese sucks' haters, but they seem to be decreasing in number slightly lately.  Always a positive thing.

@Hailinel: I was trying to get 1st post lol, j/k.

No seriously though, thank you @Bevinsky and @sdornan for your suggestions. I actually played a couple of Final Fantasy games way back and remember never being able to finish it (too slow paced), I was thinking of checking out XIII when it comes out. I also tried to play a few DS and GBA Zelda games, I remember having fun with those but I never got around to finishing them either. But I never played a Kingdom Heats game though.

lulwut. Its called debating, dude. If you make an argument on a message board. Someone will naturally challenge it and counter it., which is what I just did, because that's the reason I joined up in the first place.

Final Fantasy 12 innovated quite a bit, but appearently people hate innovation.  I loved it and couldn't care less about standard JRPGs.  To be fair, I loved the Endurance Run, but I thought it was clear that the JRPG gameplay parts were far and away the worst parts of P4. "

I've actually been meaning to play FFXII for a while now as I hear it was a huge departure for the series - and as someone whose love the for series faded after FFIX and absolutely HATED FFX and FFX-2, I think I'd probably like it more than most.

As for P4, I think that, when they shy away from cliche, JRPGs can tell a really good story with well developed characters (plus I'm a sucker for a decent anime art style) but agree that the gameplay needs to reinvent itself instead of just constantly evolving as seems to be the case for most JRPGs which just tack on an extra battle system on top of everything else and label that innovation.

You really don't see the futility there? His comment was the written equivalent of someone bashing their face against jagged rocks and you replied with a full essay. You just bring yourself down if you spend time arguing with idiots.

If you want a an RPG set in ancient Greece check out Titan Quest. I know I'll get flamed for this, but IMO it's better than Diablo 2.

You might, I liked XII alright, but I found the characters very bland compared to earlier entries in the series.  I like FFX a lot though (Not as much as VI and VIII but overall I really liked it), and I hated FFIX.  It was one of the first FFs with a challenging component to it for a while (FFXIII is pretty tough too by the way) and had a decent plotline, but the characters were just weak in my opinion, it didn't ever seem like they had much of a motivation.
If you like MMOs too, it basically seems like an offline MMO a lot of the time as well

For some reason I am oddly intrigued by this game and its ridiculous combat log.  But the more I think about it, the more I realize that if I'm going to go out and buy a DS RPG, I should probably get my hands on Bowser's Inside Story first.

Oh gosh! Soooooo boring! Turned off the QL halfway through due to to a sever lack of anything interesting going on.
I don't doubt that it's more fun when you're actually playing it, assuming you're into that sort of game.

@DiGiTaL_SiN: No problem. It's still one of the best games I've ever played, despite being like 8 years old.

This game, though, doesn't really appeal to me. Haven't played a random battle game since FFVII.

I need to get into a good tactics/rpg kinda game again, but the random encounters here look maddening. FFVII levels of random dudes, too much.

Kind of boring without any story elements shown, and I'm not a fan of random battles (well, sans Pokemon).

Wasn't it Camelot that made Golden Sun? I didn't like it all that much; it wasn't bad for a GBA title, but its puzzle system was basically a slight alteration of those found in Lufia 2 and Wild Arms.

Especially when it comes to RPGs on the DS, it seems like the combat is both super-simplified and prone to ridiculous difficulty spikes.  Brad essentially tapped his way through that forest without much thinking, but I bet he almost gets killed the first time he hits a boss.  I like that the combat in this game is slightly more complex than in most JRPGs, but I doubt it gets anywhere near interesting.  There's also way too much of it regardless of even if it was good.

I've moved to action games because a lot of RPG conventions just don't cut it for me anymore.  Persistent loss of resources, no-think progression, no tactical movement.

Basically, random encounters need to be credible threats, and boss encounters need to have a hook beyond higher HP and damage totals.  Like the Airship versus Hydra fight in FFX, or the Kanji boss battle in Persona 4.

I'm a big hater of that positional kind of combat in rpg games. It killed persona 1 for me, it's just awful. "I can't cast garu on the enemy weak to garu because my guy who casts it is in the wrong position for the T that comes out of him to hit the enemy." It's just needlesly akward. I don't know if this game's positional is akward to that extent though.
