Quick Look: Matt Hazard: Blood Bath and Beyond

A few scrub brushes from the cleaning aisle would help with all that blood.

Sit back and enjoy as the Giant Bomb team takes an unedited look at the latest video games.

it seems like this matt hazard stuff only has it's parody factor going for it, but it just falls flat.

That's because Contra is NOT a Metroid clone. Shadow Complex most definitely is a fast paced twitchy action game..Shadow Complex IS a shooter, it is also other things. I think you need to review what you're trying to say here...  This Matt Hazard game is shamelessly ripping off some classics and doing very little to expand upon them, how lame. Some neat ideas in there as Jeff and Ryan pointed out, but who's going to care about that when the gameplay itself is overdone and boring.

I agree that Contra is not a Metroid clone.  That's my point.  BBB is no more a SC clone than Contra is a Metroid clone.

What qualifies as a fast paced twitchy shooter is of course relative.  But BBB is certainly a lot more fast paced and twitchy than SC.  The demo makes this very obvious.   I would say that SC's combat is more tactical (like Flashback).  This game is a straight up action game that has combat more akin to Metal Slug.

I also don't think that this game rips off any classics any more than SC does.  It seems like the developers wanted revisit a classic genre that hasn't seen seen a new game in a while.  Has there been anything like BBB since the Metal Slug series?  This is exactly the sentiment that drove the developers of SC whose genre hadn't seen an installment since the days of Castlevania: SotN.

"what were they thinking with the slow ass bullets?! looks crappy as hell. "

If they were any faster there are some places in the demo that would be near impossible, especially on hard.  Weaving between them gets tough as it is. :)

Yes, more games do need a well placed "Nice!"

This game seems like it's trying to hard to be funny. Subtle humor is best.

I thought the trial game was fun.  Not as good as Shadow Complex, but who said it needed to be? I played it co op which probably helped too.

I was maybe going to buy it, but a $15 price tag kinda made me stop.  If it would have been $10 I totally would have picked it up.  It seems good for a night worth of fun co op with someone.

Truthfully, I always did like the concept of the Matt Hazard games. I like the satirical feel that they were trying to go for. The execution could leave a lot to be desired, but they did have a few good ideas here and there (liked the fight against the JRPG guy).  Like gamegrump stated, it'd be probably be better if rather than just cram jokes willy nilly they have each level themed specifically for a certain genre (there be the Fantasy RPG level, the Space level, the Military Shooter stage where the level gets nuked midway to become a Fallout parody, etc.)

Perhaps one day the character could be used in a decent-enough game.  That'd be nice to see.

I, for one, played the demo and think this game is pretty neat. The visuals and varied levels really entertained me.

Not familiar with the game, but looking at it my first response was "oh, it's tongue-in-cheek Shadow Complex".

The gameplay is nothing like Shadow Complex.  BBB is much faster and more exciting but nowhere as deep or involving.

I think the fact that the comments open with a discussion on the new player being back and the game isn't actually mentioned until seven or eight comments in is very telling...

I love how everyone talks about the player rather than the game xD
I thought it looked alright, might try out the demo.
