As much as I'm sure Strange Journey is a great game, the art style just really bothers me. Like seriously that helmet looks fucked, it's like an inverted pale with plumbing pipe randomly welded on it. I also don't like the first person dungeons but the combat looks fun, I donno.

This isn't that much of a strange journey, a strange journey for Shin Megami Tensei would include the following: salaryman getting drunk in Tokyo, waking up in a dumpster in Mexico with wicked hangover, 5 new tattoos of Chie, Teddie walking by in a sombrero & a variety of wanted posters of the salaryman plastered all over town; now figure out what happened & how to find Chie & get home.

Charles Fishman = gold.

It would be awesome if this was P4 canon: the main characters are one and the same, and he's the leader of the entire expedition because he's dealt with Shadows and demons before... he's been through some shit...

I wonder how the conversation with 'Satan' would go down.

I entered this in my search engine of choice and it seems to be automatically generated and popping up on several P3 related website. So, it's spam.

I'm usuallu a sucker for these things and love Dragon Quest, which this is probably influenced by but this looks kind of generic and the introduction...wow, that just seems unnessesarily long even for a RPG.

Charlie Tunoku = Charie Tuna = Charles Fishman. I love the name evolution going on here. Of course, to his friends, Charles is still Charlie. Interesting stuff, but of course it's no Persona 4 (but then again, it isn't trying to be I suppose). Hilariously great Quick Look though. I especially liked Terry.

I suppose technically SMT would be influenced by Dragon Quest, since practically every JRPG released back in the 80's was, but this game takes a page much more from the early SMT games than Dragon Quest itself. In many way this is a throwback to those games (which the US never actually got), while implementing many of the noteworthy features the franchise has added over the years. SMT is anything but generic though. (I'm actually not sure how you could like Dragon Quest and call this generic honestly...)
Also 40 minutes is nothing compared to the 20 hour introduction of FFXIII. ;P

From the makers of Persona 4 comes... Menus!: The game!

"are you tired of actually 'playing' your games? I sure was, which is why i was so happy when atlus announced Menus! : The game!

now I don't have to play anything, just tap through text screens, tap to move to a different enviroment and tap my way through a battle system.

Thanks atlus for helping me to barely play a game! :D"

@Zeik:  Fair enough, I'm not that familiar with the series in that regard so it's good they're doing that. I say it's generic because there's not really that much charm to it and even the most cookie cutter style JRPG can have something stand out and fun that I can get into and not fall into the cracks which can be easily done.

And ANY introduction in Final Fantasy is shorter then that 40 minute introduction so I'll agree with you there on that too.

@Soap:  Clearly you have little experience with RPGs (or games in general) if you think there's anything strange about the amount of menus in the game.

@EoinMason:  Strange Journey has a lot of "charm", you just have to actually get into the game. Unfortunately this Quick Look really didn't show off much of what this game has to offer.

Yeah, I suppose gaming pretty much constantly since I was seven, plus being about 3 weeks away from leaving uni (on a games design degree) with a 1st is little experience with games.

The point I was try to make is, creating a game that revolves almost entirely around menus (like this game) is not good games design, it's just fucking lazy.

Again:

If you honestly think there are too many menus in this game, you clearly don't know  much about RPGs.

  EDIT:

regardless of what system you own, there is only one correct answer.  Pokémon.

Wow. one look through your post history already shows some hypocrisy. Pokemon is just as menubased as SMT:SJ . And outside of competitive play hilariously easy and mind numbingly dull, archaic and slow.

Also, the difference with pokémon is that it doesn't try and stray outside of the limitations of the game.

It's a DS game and it plays like a DS game.

This looks like a PS2 game crammed into a DS to the point were the navigation looks awful. If they had worked better with the system they were developing this for it wouldn't be that way.

@Soap:  The menus, besides the main status menu, are there to navigate your ship and that's it. This is the beginning of the game and they only got to the meat of it -- the dungeon crawling and actual gameplay -- at the very end. Though personally, it's very convenient to have the ship navigation with a menu select, as it's quick and easy. As long as the game is, having to walk through the ship just to get to necessary locations would become a chore.

It looks like a decent enough game, but after playing SMT: Nocturne, I automatically turn down games where you recruit monsters to your party instead of getting actual people, the total lack of character development makes it incredibly unappealing to me.

I used to make an exception for the Pokemon games, but even they are wearing on me these days.

It doesn't really show when you complain about menus of all things in an rpg.

......Wat , Pokemon knows its a ds game? try gameboy colour. Perhaps.

Either way, what does the above have to do with the game relying on menus? Your original statement was something along the lines of''MENUS!:THE GAME'' not "the UI sucks''. Besides, it doesn't. Like I said: Pokemon is  10x as archaic and slow then any rpg I have ever played:

The movement speed is shit, the ui requires so much workaround when the simpelest improvement would change a lot(IE: the fight button being so big instead of the pokeyman skills showing up there) and simply using a tackle attack takes approximatly 40 seconds because the game keeps informing me that its raining or that my pidgeotto is asleep. In this quicklook.....what exactly did you see that made the UI bad in your eyes? Moving around? takes 2 sec., using a move? takes 2 sec., talking with a dude? takes 2 sec.

I could go on and on about how crappy pokemon's UI is, but I think I've made my case.

@Soap: You really don't have even the slightest clue what you're talking about, do you? This interface is very common in first person RPGs. Etrian Odyssey? Exact same interface. The Dark Spire? Very similar interface. Shining in the Darkness? Again, very similar. Most importantly lets not forget the game this is actually modeled after, the original Shin Megami Tensei games on the SNES. We can even go outside of RPGs. The Ace Attorney series? Literally nothing but menus.
Using menus for navigation is not lazy game design, it's actually good game design when it works for the game. Walking from one end of that ship to the other in first person would add absolutely nothing to the game. It would just make getting to key points on the ship more tedious and time consuming than there is any reason to be, especially since you'll be visiting them many times over the course of the game. That doesn't mean the whole game is nothing but menus. Most of the game takes place in the actual dungeon, and you don't use menus to navigate that.

@mutha3: I wouldn't say that Pokemon's UI is entirely horrible, but there are definite points where its age shows. Like how some menus could be simplified further, or how a better use of hardware features could be implemented. Personally, I think even those complaints could be said to be mostly fixed in the newest Gen IV release (HeartGold and SoulSilver). The UI is much cleaner, conveys more information in less space, etc.

As for SMT? In the old days the UI was pretty cluttered too. Here it's sorta cluttered, but the plot justifies it since it IS the HUD of a helmet you're wearing. And it's all symbolic semantics here, so you have to visually learn to identify elements and such through practice and association. Given the audience, this shouldn't be a problem.
