Love this game. This and 2 (not as much) are the only Sonic game's that I've liked. It's shown so badly when played like this though. It's not a hard game, I played this when I was around 10 and it wasn't hard to keep the momentem going at all. I think they're being kind of snobs. This game isn't that bad at all.

I played this through to the finish. The adventure stuff is bad (but for its time not that bad), but the action stages were pretty damn intense.

No regrets for the time spent with it; this game was a lot of fun.

Shaymarx, what are you on about. This IS SA1. Adventure stages all around!

Little known fact; the original designer/creator of Sonic 1 and 2 (the levels, game concept etc not the characters or its art assets) stopped being involved with the franchise after those two games and some time in 2001 was hired by Naughtydog and still works for them as one of their lead level designers.

Jason Rubin, one of Naughtydogs founders(who left the company in 2004 I believe) was interviewed a while back and talked about him, the interview can be found on Kikizo.com.

awesome, need to watch all of these.  Hope they do Code Veronica Quick Look.
Also what these guys fail to remember, is that the Dreamcast actually came out in September 1998 in Japan, and this game, the graphics, all a year older than what they gave credit.  So the dreamcast had these amazing graphics and games 2 years before the PS2 was out, and the PS2 came out with so many Jaggies, it made people wonder.

And there you have it. Sonic Adventure is not as magnificent as the Sonic fanboys make it out to be.

Would've been better if you guys had gone more with a historical angle to all this. Of course it looks and sounds like crap now. Given the occasion, it would have been better to talk about what it was like then and why anyone even remembers it now. Something beyond watching a dude play the game cold and complain about the weaknesses everybody already knows it has.

True that this game has not aged very well but it was so exciting 10 years ago. Perhaps SEGA is right, the demographic of Sonic games has grown past those who grew up with these older games.

Yay Dreamcast Day!

I do have fond memories of this game, considering it was sonics first foray into 3D, they got a lot of things right.

Also, Brad died.

I agree with this.  Many old games, especially old 3D ones, don't hold up to those of today.

If SEGA were to put out the action stages on PSN or XBLA as as just a game in and of itself then I would totally buy that.  Just cut all that adventure field non sense out and boil it down to its purest form.  Five bucks, that would be rad.

True story: I got into gaming really late, and this was the first PC game I owned. I think the PS2 was fairly along in its life cycle, but I had no knowledge of console games. Picked this up for PC (DX version), and I agree completely with you guys. Whenever you're going on momentum, it's a blast. But the story is SO STUPID, and almost all the other characters besides Sonic's levels were garbage. I beat it all the way up to the last Tails level because Eggman racing is shiiiit, and I never got to see the Metal Sonic stuff. :( I still have this game and could load it up right now, but it's on 2 discs and that's a fucking pain.

This game is silly now, but it REALLY WAS the shit if you were a kid in 99. The graphics were lightyears ahead of PS1 and N64, it was super fast, and the way all 6 characters' stories intertwined was really cool.

The whole thing just seems weird and half-broken now, but at the time, it really was something special, especially if you were young.

I imported a Asian Dreamcast, I had beaten this game more than 10 years ago.

When this came out this was THE best looking game in the world.  This was 1998's Crysis.

edit : Home game, Model 3 arcade games were better looking...

Yeah, if you were to stack up this game and it's sequel side by side today, the sequel is way better. Less gimmicky bullshit, better graphics, better music, better story (not saying much), better controls, better camera, and more replay value with multiple storylines.

I still enjoy Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, mostly for the reason Brad didn't like this game: all action sequences (though the treasure hunting sequences aren't really actiony, and kinda suck).

Wow. This quick look managed to shatter any fond memories I had playing this on the Gamecube. There are so many elements to Sonic Adventure, that while impressive in 1999 and even passable in 2003 are total garbage now.

In this game, sonic and friends teased him and called him Eggman and Robotnik called himself Robotnik. It's probably how it should work.

Really? I thought the second Sonic Adventure was terrible compared to this game. I actually quite enjoyed this game, probably the last sonic game that I did. (Granted I've barely touched Sonic game's after Adventure 2.)

@Zeik: To be perfectly honest, I'm sort of biased against the second one because I'm not a particularly aged gamer (almost 16), and SA2 was the one that introduced me to the series. I fully acknowledge the superiority of the older games and now have sort of a bitter opinion on Sonic games these days, but when I first played SA2 at like the age of 8, I thought if was f*cking amazing.

I am one of the few people that loved and continue to love this game....

I know the world areas are a bit meh but I think the game worked well enough and is deffo the best 3D sonic game that has been made.

I am not all that young (23) so do remember getting this when it actually came out; and I really enjoyed the set up. Playing through the game as the different characters and how everything made sense once you had finished it with all of them (like why sonic only fights certain numbers of the main boss; because tales / knuckles fight the others )...

I unno; I still have fond memories and watching this just makes me want to dig out my DC and play it again....

I played the special edition of this on the Gamecube, and I really enjoyed it. I remember beating it with Tails, but as Sonic there was a point where the game screwed up and I couldn't continue to the last level.

Man, fucking HATERS.  Sonic Adventure 1 is awesome!  It hasn't held up very well, sure, but it's still got some great levels.  Sky Deck 4 lyfe.
