Super Mario World and Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island are the best Mario games.

Yoshi's Island is an amazing game. The graphics, music, characters, everything is superb.

When I was a kid playing this on the SNES, I could appreciate the graphics and the music, but the gameplay involving baby Mario turned me off. His cries were just too annoying for me at the time. But years later I revisited this title, and loved it fully. No game to this date has looked this pretty, and it has some unique gameplay quirks going too. Even the story and the characters are great. That Kamek wizard dude was sweet, and all the boss fights are fun too. The last boss fight is one of the coolest boss fights in a Mario game.

Then Kirby just straight jacked this game's style in recent years. And as cool as it looked, I thought that game was super boring to play through. A little bit too easy difficulty-wise I guess?

Agreed. The only thing I disliked about Yoshi's Island was Baby Mario, but his crying was an effective means of making you want to keep him on your back.

I'm looking forward to playing through it again when it hits the 3DS.

Yeah, between their hatred of Yoshi's Island and their saying really stupid fucking things like "they should never make another Metroid game," I think Jeff and Ryan need to do us all a favor and never have an opinion on anything Nintendo does ever again, lest I have another aneurysm.

As someone who likes Yoshi's Story,  even I can admit it IS kinda shitty.

Also, did this come up on the Bombcast or something, because I haven't listened to this week's one yet.

Not gonna lie but I forgot all about Yoshi's Island. I looked up some screenshots and started to remember it. Super Mario World is still the fucking best but I didn't completely hate Yoshi's Island.

I like that game but Super Mario World is 1000s times better and a lot of people think if its not as good as the first it is inferior which is hard to argue. I think the worst thing nintendo did was call it Super Mario World 2 it should've just been called yoshis island and I think it would have been looked at on its own merits in stead of being compared to what many see as the best snes games Super Mario World

While I concur that Yoshi's Island is the most delicious of  videogaming confections, I wouldn't include in my top 5 Mario games because I don't consider it to be a Mario game.
Yes, Mario's in it but then he's also in Dr Mario. And you wouldn't call that a Mario game.

Haha, well, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Jeff also doesn't care for Super Metroid, which is crazy, but hey - whatever. I'm curious to what Brad will think of Yoshi's Island when he plays it eventually.

I just feel that sometimes, the younger crowd of Giant Bomb is too eager to hop on the bandwagon of the staff. And when it comes to games the younger users probably never played due to them being too young or....errrr....not even born yet - I don't want them to only have one viewpoint and think that games like Yoshi's Island, Donkey Kong Country, or Super Metroid are only "okay" games.

And that's another thing, it broke my heart during the SNES-marathon when a user requested DKC2 to be played, and no one of the entire Giant Bomb staff said they had any copies of the DKC games. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh! I will admit I love the DKC series way more than your average person, but still, those games were huge when they came out.

One of my favorite Yoshi's Island tracks:

Yeah, Yoshi's Story wasn't anywhere near as good as Yoshi's Island, but I still enjoyed it myself. Still a real colorful and cool looking game. Same goes for Yoshi's Island 2 on the DS. I probably liked Yoshi's Story more than that though.

I hold this game in extremely high regard. It is one of my favorite plattform games of all times and also one of the best games I have ever played. You could argue the whole "it's not a Mario game" but the game stands on it's own feet. I didn't buy it because it stood "Super Mario World 2" myself. It just seemed to be a cool game with a crazy artstyle. It does not have the "Mario feel" when it comes to plattforming but who cares when it's good in it's own unique way? It looked great, FX2 made the game do amazing things, the bosses where kick ass (alos quite simple) and a Mario game have never had such an awesome final boss fight as it had in Yoshi's Island.

I choose this over Donkey Kong Country 2 even though I loved the first game that got released the year before. I had multiple arguments with friends why I choose Yoshi's Island instead of the "cool looking game". I regret nothing. Yoshi's Island was and is still today a fantastic game that still looks stunning. Jeff and Brad are entitled to their opinions but right out badmouthing this game seems a bit harsh. Yeah, it may not be a "true" Mario game but what it does it does with much grace and finess.

I personally loved the original Super Mario World the best, but Yoshi's Island was definitely a solid game too. I remember seeing it for the first time on a display system as a kid and I immediately had to have it.

@FreakAche: They may have said it on the day they played all those SNES games for members. I watched a little since my friend has a premium account. Jeff also said that he didn't like the Metroid Prime series which I think is weird because that was one of the most graceful transitions from 2d to 3d ever and those games are pretty atmospheric.

It's from the Members Only SNES stream from a month or so back (I think it's in Part 1 that's on the site, should you get a chance to see it).

I went back and played Yoshi's Island for the first time since I was a child, although I didn't really remember much from the game, it still holds up very well. The art style is vibrant and unique (especially for its time), the music is bouncing, and the gameplay design is smart and fun.

Jeff is bananas. I played Yoshi's Island again sometime last year and still thought it was great, and I'd like to think that only a little bit of my opinion is nostalgia driven. Yes, baby mario is bullshit and annoying, but overall the game is still one of the best nintendo platformers ever made. It's kind of hard too, certainly more than most mario games.

I'm not surprised at his opinion though. He dislikes DKC and Super Metroid so there's already no hope for him.
