Hm. Well, I'll give it a try. Will be interesting to find out what kind of F2P structure they plan on adopting - but I'm sure it can join World of Tanks and QuakeLive in my F2P games list.

Oh man TRIBES for FREE! This game was awesome back in the day. It was before battlefield and Halo. I'm afraid that the gameplay itself might not hold up to today's standards, but since it's free to play, the only thing we lose is time... If it sucks.

Here's a fucking hint.  Tribes and even Tribes 2..was out LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG before Halo was even conceptualized by anyone at Bungie.  And this has the exact same "look" just updated graphics.

I  realize that Starsiege Tribes is older, but still. Why do so many HD-era sci fi shooters look like Halo? This, Section 8 Prejudice, Planetside 2...they all owe a LOT to Halo's aesthetic. Especially noticeable here, because that InstantAction title from GarageGames (from team members who actually worked on the Tribes series') -- Fallen Empire: Legion -- does NOT look very Halo inspired. 
 
Still looks good, I'm just sayin'. If this comes to PSN, I'll play it.
 
Also, I just gotta say, the "Shazbot" sh*t is some of the most pathetic, overtly nerdy crap I think I've ever heard on the internet. It's worse than Battlestar nerds actually using "frak" in sentences.

It DOES look like Halo. As in Visually. You can't dispute that. So what, Tribes came first. That doesn't mean Ascend doesn't look a whole hell of a lot like Halo 3. Stop pretending that knowing about Tribes' coming first makes you smarter than people WITH FUNCTIONING VISION! When Tribes came out has no bearing on how Ascend looks. You're a fool to think otherwise. If Halo never came out, than Ascend would have a much different aesthetic no doubt.   It is borrowing a LOT of visual cues from Halo. And people are right to call it on that.

I've seen concept art for the heavies floating around the internet, I'd say they're probably here somewhere. But nobody wants to see a heavy flying around - they aren't exactly compelling viewing.

I have virtually zero PC heritage and even I'm aware of the Tribes legacy - how else is the aesthetic of this game supposed to look? If they'd gone out of their way to distance it from the open, lush planetary look that people now automatically correspond with Halo, I can't imagine fans of the original Tribes titles would have been happy.
 
The more multiplayer shooters that are large, open and encourage a range of tactics, the better. Corridor twitch just isn't for me anymore (although it looks like my reflexes are woefully inadequate for Tribes, too).

Tribes came before halo, but a fat percentile of the people on XBLA/PSN will know halo over tribes. They'll think it looks like Halo, and the designers of this game will no doubt be aware of this, I actually think they deliberately decided not to distance the aesthetic from halo's because it's far more welcoming to a casual shooter fan.

Who the fuck else remembers SHIFTER+ MOD.

God my brother and I loved us some Tribes back in the day. My pentium II 450mhz powered through it.

I'm back on board. I played a metric ass ton of the original Tribes and dabbled a bit in the sequel which I thought was not as good. Free to play makes this a get for myself but I'll probably need to upgrade my PC to get back into it. I now know how Jeff feels when he talks about upgrading to play the new Planetside. Admittedly I didn't even know that game existed until a couple podcasts ago. The big question I put to this free-to-play model is how will they handle mod support. Mods were what kept me coming back to the original game even though not all of then were great. If players can't just stack a dozen deployable force fields on top of the flag then it will be a waste.

Free To Play is the right way to go with this game.

Tribes 2 was amazing....

The online interface for setting up clans and stuff was way ahead of its time I can't believe how hard that community fell off after the game got old!

I willllll play this for nostalgia and because I am the best shriek and spinfuser shooter on this or any planet.

Loved Tribes.. but make the guns sound better :)
