I turned a corner this year where my tastes in games have waned so much where I no longer understand why people are into the games they are into. I certainly remember how I was so it isn't really that I don't understand, but it's definitely a new world for me lately. I still enjoy watching videos related to games though, for whatever reason.

Ross rocked that shit.

He totally did. And Jeff Gerstmann is still the realist guy covering video games in 2011. Fuck the haters!

I wonder if the Giant Bomb guys are going to take the plunge and just fully mine the depths of Mame.

They spent upwards of $1000 on a scan convertor that barely works just so they could avoid condoning emulation, so I doubt they'll ever acknowledge MAME beyond hushed whispers and a dismissive, "that guy smokes POT, and POT is WACK" throw-away line.

It's too bad.

As someone fairly ignorant of the Sega Saturn catalog in general, this stream made it look only slightly better than the Sega CD. This was obviously unintentional, and there were obviously Saturn games worth playing, but I feel like the only Saturn game they played that can be considered any kind of good is Panzer Dragoon II.

So I ask: What were the actual great Saturn games that came out in the US? I understand that the console is an importing gold mine, but I'm having trouble figuring out what the standout titles were domestically.

From what I remember Sonic R, Saturn Bomberman, The Virtua games (Cop, Fighter) And Knights into Dreams, are IMHO the notable ones.

Jeff has said several times that MAME is great.

So whatever happened to the old games marathon from last year? I can't seem to find it anywhere, not even on Justin TV or UStream.

@Marnox: It's not under Subscriber or Features as far as I can see. Unless it's under some ill-descriptive title.

I don't even remember what exactly it was called.

Treasure games were great. I suggest checking out Guardian Heroes (here http://www.giantbomb.com/quick-look-guardian-heroes/17-5076/) and Radiant Silvergun (although that was an import, I believe), both ported to XBLA and PSN. Also, the three Panzer Dragoon, Virtua Cop and Virtua Fighter (which, to this day I maintain is waaaaay superior to Tekken, let alone Toshinden). At the time, though, you'd play a bunch of ports as well. Tomb Raider was there. Resident Evil got a release eventually. Discworld and a bunch of other point and clicks were there.

And of course, all the good Capcom fighters were best on the Saturn's crazy 2D chipsets.

There was plenty of good stuff to play at the time. Not nearly as much as on the PSOne, for sure, but still.

Ryans right, JSR Future wasn't a disappointment at all.

And man, I loved Dynamite Cop on the DC, played the hell out of that co-op and collected the stupid artwork too. But even back then I knew how dumb that game was.

Man, I loved Die Hard Arcade. When I was a kid I beat it at my local arcade with a dude I swear was Chris Elliot from SNL.

The best part is if you beat it 2 player, you have to fight eachother at the end. He whipped my goddamn ass.

Ryan:

"[the Justin Bieber toothbrush] beeps every two minutes, in case you were wondering when to kill yourself."

Jeff:

"I often am."

Yeah.

If you're liking this, the 2010 Year-end nostalgia session is pretty much what sold me on this site. Give me a second and I'll go link that up for you.

Here we go, a three-parter -

http://www.justin.tv/giantbomb/b/276118469

Specifically, the sad montage scene of Jeff packing all the old consoles up is what made me realize this site was a landmark of our time, chosen only by the enlightened. One day, we'll look back on Giant Bomb with great pride for our hobby.

I love that Jeff implies in this video that the Xbox fanboy culture is the result of latent anger over the death of the Dreamcast.

Ross here, glad you guys liked the gifts. Had been looking for the usual pre-Christmas mailbag video and randomly came across this catching up on the site videos. Was on a plane during the live stream, otherwise would have been on chat. Thought a Tengen Tetris 2-player Vs. scrub league might be interesting during the slow game weeks to come, never know. Keep the content coming.

Would've liked it if they tried out the Saturn port of Quake, I've heard it was a decent version, with a new engine specifically for the saturn (the same engine was used in Powerslave and Duke Nukem 3D as well) by the porting studio, and did some stuff the original Quake engine didn't, like colored lightning.

I get the feelin Shenmue was more popular in Europe than in the US. The video game magazine I read in Sweden gave it 10/10 yet Gamespot gave it like 6.5 or something. Also they only released the DC version of Shenmue 2 in Europe, not the US. Gary is European and Patrick and Jeff are not and they don't like it. I loved Shenmue 1 and 2 on the Dreamcast. No other game made me feel like I was living in a virtual world.

Dumbing down the graffiti system was what really spoiled an entire part of the game for me. But I disagree with Patrick about the soundtrack.
