    Picross

    Franchise »

A grid-based puzzle game franchise by Nintendo. Though based on the nonogram puzzle format that originated in 1980s Japan, these games have made the Picross name synonymous with the puzzle type itself.

    Overview

Picross (picture crossword) is a series of nonogram image puzzle games released on various Nintendo platforms. The first three games - Mario's Picross and Picross 2 on Gameboy and Mario's Super Picross on the SNES) featured Mario characters, while subsequent games used a more simple style, though Nintendo-themed puzzles did still appear. Following poor sales of the original Game Boy game outside of Japan, no more Picross games were release in North America or Europe until Picross DS in 2007. Since then, however, the Japan-only Mario's Super Picross has been released without translation on the PAL Virtual Console, and several of the Picross NP puzzles have been released as Picross DS DLC.
