Giant Bomb's E3 2011 Game of the Show

We've made a choice!

It didn't take much discussion, so I'll keep it short. We've compared notes and decided to name BioShock Infinite as our Game of the Show for E3 2011. I'm sure you've already heard us talking about the game in various articles and podcasts, so I'll spare you the flowery language and instead point you to the interview we conducted with Irrational's Ken Levine during the show last week. It was probably one of my favorite moments of the show, and I'm not just saying that because it allowed me to sit down for a full half-hour.

BioShock Infinite showed extremely well during E3 last week and we're going to sit here and patiently wait for its final release sometime in 2012. Let's hope the final product turns out as well as the gameplay demo being shown behind closed doors at the 2K booth did. I hope that the full demo is eventually released for public consumption, as it really sets up a lot of interesting things about Columbia, its various factions, and some of the major players you'll encounter as you play.

Also, a quick programming note: We'll each be talking about some of the games that stood out to us at E3 over the course of this week, so watch out for that!

Looks so good - it really stands apart from the other FPS games.

In all honesty I would prefer no shooting at all, it's what put me off the first Bioshock. I don't see why a story driven game has to have shooting, it could easily take the Portal path and just use plasmids and puzzle elements.

But some people don't like puzzle games, either. In Infinite, the shooting makes narrative sense and it'd be weird if you weren't fighting crazed people akin to splicers during the course of the game and, instead, methodically paced yourself to figure out a bunch of puzzles.

I get that but I'm saying with the plasmids you could still slaughter crazed people, if anything it would be more tactical. Just saying I wish the guns weren't necessary, like said on the E3 live show, every game has to have guns.

You do know this game has the equivalent of plasmids, right? Like Murder of Crows, which is this games version of the Bee plasmid from Bioshock.

After seeing what I saw and knowing what I know, I agree. Should be a trip to play.

I suppose it makes sense to pick Bioshock Infinite, though it always irritates me when a "Game of Show" is a game in which they barely have anything to show.

I really wish this game was releasing this Fall. Hopefully it doesn't release around Mass Effect 3 next year so I can give both games there much deserved time.

Yeah, and if the developers implement something similar to the Tonics in the previous games, a player might not even need to use guns at all (using plasmids + melee weapon only).

I'd say the game I'm most excited to play following E3 is still AC: Revelations.  However, if I was being "REAL" and not just going with a safe bet, I'd say Prey 2 was my surprise AND game of the show.

I agree with this choice, although it was close between this game and Prey 2 once the show was over.

As long as we don't have to do more of that bullshit "trap big daddies and keep little sister safe" bullshit 30 times. Looking forward to this, but not going to get too excited, so I'm not let down.

How cartoonish, in the art style? Cause I've never seen a Disney movie where a dude makes you bash his head in with a golf club. Although I totally SHOULD have seen a Disney movie where that happens.

But I will give this game a chance, if they release that demo I might buy it if I like the gameplay.

Because I didn't enjoy the first one and I don't like linear corridor shooters in general, even if you can see the sky in this one. I'm getting bored just thinking about it.

I think I'm anticipating Skyrim a bit more hotly right now, but that may just be because I'll be playing it sooner.

Bioshock Infinite looks amazing. Major hype.

I am really looking forward to this. I love the setting, it looks awesome. I still can't figure out how much is scripted and how much is up to the player, especially the bits on the sky rails. Can you choose to jump off when ever you like and skip to another rail (or plummet to your death) or do you have to stay on until you reach a specific destination?

Total non-sequitur. I was commenting on the fact that I wouldn't have named this as game of the show, not coming into a Bioshock article and talking shit, like you seem to want to imply.

I don't know. This is definitely an awesome looking game, but there will almost certainly be another E3 before this comes out. Seems like some playable games were just as deserving.

Good choice.

One of my personal favourites for this year is Rage and I think it's a bit of a bummer you guys didn't get any footage of it (that I know of), but I'm really really happy about the interview with John Carmack. I hope someone decides to get a little bit more interested in the game, before it is released.

I really don't get it. I played Bioshock one and barley got through it because I was bored halfway through. I didn't even touch Bioshock 2 and have zero interest in this game, except for the rail stuff that looks like fun. What the hell do people see in these games?

Not a big fan of bioshock but i have a lot of respect for the amount of detail and atmosphere in the games. Ken seems like a really smart guy. He looks like he could use a good bit of sleep though.

To swoxx, well for a start I enjoyed the hell out of Bioshock. But it gets worse, I enjoyed the hell out of Bioshock 2. And Minervas Garden rocked. To be a bit more specific, I enjoyed the evolving gameplay, the story, the graphics and the art aesthetic. My origonal grounding was in Sytem Shock 2. I'm definetly looking forward to Bioshock Infinite. It's like a series of well written and inspired books with a developing common theme.

I really wish I could see what some see in the Bioshock games. I think the art style is nice to look at, less interesting to play in. And whatever they got going in this game, I'm not seeing it unfortunately.

I liked playing the Bioshock's as RPG's: power up, conserve items, and try to find all the loot. It was a lot of fun, except that the difficulty is balanced around you finding almost no loot, so it gets way too easy to be enjoyable as an actual fps.

I sure wish they'd make a hard mode that made ammo really hard to find (or alternatively, splicers take a ton of ammo to kill) so I could enjoy both sides of the game.

BF3 would be game of show for me because I'm a total BF junkie. But I would agree that Infinite is the more interesting game.

BF3 is the beer to Infinite's XO Cognac.

I'll never be surprised at the amount of false outrage some people have, or the quantity of people who have to make their disinterest very clearly known.

It just doesn't make any sense.

I like Ken Levine and his philosophy of game development
