Giant Bomb's Game of the Year 2010: Day One

We reveal our picks for 2010's 2009 Game of the Year, Best New Character, Best Original Song, Best Debut, and Best PC-Only Game.

And be sure to check out today's Game of the Year deliberation podcast to find out how we came to these decisions!

2010's 2009 Game of the Year

Borderlands

No Caption Provided
2009's Borderlands is such a 2010 game that it's on the verge of becoming a 2011 game. That might sound like nonsense, but mostly what it means is that a good number of us are still actively playing Borderlands even today, over a year after it came out. That's largely because  Gearbox did such a great job of supporting the game with ongoing DLC releases this year, putting out four new packs that thoroughly rounded out the world of Pandora and made Borderlands feel more like the game we all wanted it to be when it shipped.

We're not sure Gearbox is finished pumping out new areas, quests, and loot for Borderlands (hell, we don't even think Gearbox is sure if they're finished), but one thing is for sure: we're ready to play any new content for the game they want to gin up before we get our hands on the inevitable sequel.

No Caption Provided
Runners-up:  Forza Motorsport 3 Dragon Age: Origins

Best New Character

Bayonetta or maybe Mordin Solus

No Caption Provided

No Caption Provided
Runners-up: Francis York Morgan, Mordin Solus and/or Bayonetta, hell, we don't know.

Best Original Song

Entrance Music - Pac-Man Championship Edition DX

No Caption Provided
There's certainly something to be said for thoughtful orchestral scores with layered themes and an emotional resonance that brings weight to the proceedings and helps elevate the dramatic poignance of a game's narrative. But here at Giant Bomb, we like bangers--insidious, hard-hitting tracks with bass that will ruin your plumbing and snaky hooks that won't let go--and nothing banged harder in 2010 than the main menu music in Namco's downloadable Pac-Man Championship Edition DX.

It's a loping, looping knob-twiddler in which each tweaked-out, wobbly cycle lasts well under a minute, but it's so infectious that you'll have a hard time leaving the main menu upon which it plays. When you do, though, you'll be completely pumped up and ready to eat the hundreds of ghosts that Pac-Man CE DX throws at you in any given minute. But rather than just trying--and failing--to describe this piece of music ad nauseum, you should probably just listen to it yourself. It's energetic, it's primal, and its our choice for Best Original Song in 2010.

No Caption Provided
Runners-up: Betus Blues - Super Meat Boy, Life is Beautiful - Deadly Premonition

Best Debut

Bayonetta

No Caption Provided
2010 started with a bang--a big, crazy, half-naked, J-Pop-laced, hair-covered, lollipop-sucking, angel-smashing, ten-foot-tall bang--thanks in no small part to PlatinumGames' Bayonetta.  Even though it was within the very first week of January that we were treated to a much-needed jolt of over-the-top Japanese video-game ridiculousness, it was an experience that stayed with us for the rest of the year.

There's a standing complaint within the games business for more original materials, and less sequels. Bayonetta's core gameplay might be very directly derivative of Capcom's Devil May Cry series, and the experience laced with loving references to Sega arcade classics like OutRun and Space Harrier, but she still managed to make a mighty strong first impression on her own merits, though we have to admit that we cannot wait to see what her sequel will look like.

No Caption Provided
Runners-up: Super Meat Boy, Limbo

Best PC-Only Game

StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty

No Caption Provided
Real-time strategy, with its demands for pixel-perfect mouse precision and zillions of hotkeys, might be the one genre that's most suited to being played on a PC. Sure, RTS has been done on a console, but you sure couldn't pull off the lightning-fast, high level of competitive play that defines StarCraft II's multiplayer with a gamepad. But the multiplayer's enormous strategic depth is only half the story, since StarCraft II also offers one of the best and most varied single-player campaigns we've ever seen in an RTS as well.

Blizzard's long-awaited sequel didn't just recreate the core struggle between the terrans, zerg, and protoss; it revitalized and modernized the essence of what StarCraft is, with just enough streamlining here and rebalancing there to make the game feel simultaneously familiar and brand new. The pervasive variety of the campaign, endlessly evolving challenge of the multiplayer, and promise of two story-driven expansions all combine to make StarCraft II a PC game we'll be thinking about for years to come.

No Caption Provided
Runners-up: Civilization V, VVVVVV

And to recap, here's a video that covers all of today's categories. Be sure to check back at noon tomorrow for another batch of awards.

No. The Chapter 1 Boss music is the fucking best piece of original music in a video game since Oblivion's theme. "
The best music in the game is Devil N' Bass, found in Dark World Hell.

Honestly as much as I loved Marston, his character was kind of bad.   His character was already completely developed from before the game starts, he didn't evolve at all over the entire story. Plus he would do anything for anybody who asked, regardless of how unsavoury they were if there was a slight chance of them offering some tiny scrap of help.   I really enjoyed the world of RDR and the ending of the game, but Marston's story was really stretched thin. You can summarize Marson's flat character in only a few words, while the winner and runner ups have substantially more depth to them. "
Yup. The West evolves more than Marston over the course of that game.

I was taken aback when Jeff made an argument for  VVVVVV. It's a great game, albeit a difficult one, and its soundtrack is absolutely phenomenal.

(though Bayonetta is awesome too, haven't played ME2 yet)

Marston looks like a Clint Eastwood character, but unlike any badass CE western character he behaves like a slave not like a badass.

Agreed, somehow i feel they might try to avoid "the norm" to be different.. And that'll be unfortunate, if it happens. There's no denying RDR's impact this year. "
John Marston very much almost made it if you listened to the deliberations. Brad, Ryan and Vinny all made compelling cases for him, but then Ryan shut him down by saying that he wasn't even sure if John Marston was the best character in that game (I agree with that statement; I honestly believe Dutch is up there in the league of the greatest antagonists of all time). Meanwhile, Jeff fought Marston all the way, feeling that he was very much a trope of westerns that was very well voice acted, which is fair considering the fact that he never finished the game.  Francis York Morgan is extremely compelling to me watching the first episode of the Endurance Run for each team, and the debate that EXPLODES over Mordin Solus (not as to quality of character, but purpose of character) is an absolute lock for his status as a Character of the Year winner. Oddly, I don't know how they swayed back towards Bayonetta, as they chose Mordin on the deliberations pretty solidly. Bayonetta, in my opinion, is probably a little weaker than John Marston, but I also haven't played more than an hour of Bayonetta, so my opinion is rather skewed.  All four of these characters are freaking excellent, and the only two characters I feel are missing are Dutch and Dr. Fetus. However, depending on how the rest of Amnesia plays out (I've just entered the Refinery), Alex of Brannenburg is SUPER-compelling, and I can't wait to see if his big reveal is as amazing as I want it to be. "

I put Bayonetta as my game of the year (didn't play redead, brotherhood, or mass effect) so I'm glad to see it got some good wins. I have also played the crap out of Super Meat Boy (almost at 200/200) and I was happy to hear it got some mad props. I expect it to win best downloadable title.

@patrick: I disagree. I think York was a great character who transcended the crappy gameplay. Take for instance Alpha Protocol. Is the gameplay unintuitive and glitchy? Yep. Does that stop the characters from being great? Nope.

I agree with Bayonetta as the best new character.  Marston may be supremely well played  and his story is better told, but he's still nothing that hasn't been done before.  Bayonetta SOLD "Bayonetta"; Marston came with "Red Dead Redemption".

Bayonetta being misogynist? HAAAAAAAHAHAHAHA!!
Yeah, here's a female character who's strong and sexy, but she's not sexy for a man, she's sexy for herself, she's got a tender and loving side, so she's not just a man with tits, and in all things: she looks like she's having a blast.
She's just teeeeeerrible.

Sounds like someone didn't play Bayonetta. "
Regardless of the quality of Bayonetta the game, Bayonetta the character is, despite the inexplicable awarding here, a two-dimensional, wildly misogynistic stereotype. Confident in any situation? Yes, but only because she has a one-note personality. The game is awesome in spite of Bayonetta, not because of her. "
I don't think misogyny means what you think it means.

More on topic,  I think the problem is basically Bayonetta is making the list for a completely different set of reasons than the other ones.  For Mordin, Marston, and Morgan, their claims to the "Best Character Title" is the depth of their characters, their back stories, their motivations, and their revelations as the plot progresses.  Regardless of how much each of the GB staff agrees with the each character's possession of such qualities, that is the bar by which they are being measured.

Bayonetta's claim is that she flips the fuck out and is crazy and does so while being a very nontraditional female protagonist.  However, she isn't so much an actual character as she is simply an avatar for the player, bearing the same amount of crazy as the game's world.  Thus she is making the list for best character despite her lack of, er, character.

Awesome job guys I'm so excited for the next few days. And to Jeff I thank you. because of your passionate defense for vvvvvv i went and bought the game from steam as soon as i heard the podcast and I agree; that game is awesome. Its challenging, but so much fun and probably has some of the best music i've heard all year. Plus I also think that Darksiders is one of the best new games and should have been in the top 3. If everyone calls you a Zelda ripoff to me that seems more like a compliment than an insult. keep up the good work guys can't wait for tomorrow

Why was the original song from RDR not even mentioned?  I was fine with what was on the list, especially the SMB stuff, but the entering Mexico tune in RDR had to have at least made a list of some kind, at least to me.

Also couldn't disagree more with Jeff on Limbo - that argument was frustrating, though not as bad to me as the Character stuff - got a bit tired of hearing "Morton" rather than Mordin.

I'm kind of flummoxed by all the Bayonetta love. That game was a fun weekend rental 11 months ago, but it is in no way in the running for one of my top games of the year. It was nice that Deadly Premonition was at least given some respect, getting runner-up in two categories. I thought everyone at Giant Bomb hated that game completely but apparently its just Brad.

Ugh. The character of the year discussion lays bare the fact that the GB guys (other than Brad) totally lack an understanding of what makes a great character. Bayonetta?!? Agent York?!?!  Jesus fucking christ.

During the podcast, Jeff called Limbo "yet another 2D indie platformer with an art style." Ryan then said "well if you say 'yet another' in front of anything it makes it sound bad." Brad then chimed in with "yet another dancing game" in regards to Dance Central.

Right, and Bayonetta (as much as I love it) is yet another 3rd person action game, a la Ninja Gaiden, Devil May Cry, God of War, and other shitty ones. Limbo is another 2D indie platformer with an art style.  But Darksiders is "yet another Zelda game." There's a reason why the term is "Zelda game." Because there's only one other game like it! Darksiders is like Zelda... but in high-def, with a deeper combat mechanic and a more "mature" theme. It's awesome. That said... I'm glad Bayonetta won. Clearly there was enough confusion amongst the guys (or just Brad) leading up today and/or the writing of today's article in order to cause this mix up. Therefore, they just said fuck it and said the two both won. Not that big of a deal at the end of the day...
