Honestly as much as I loved Marston, his character was kind of bad.   His character was already completely developed from before the game starts, he didn't evolve at all over the entire story. Plus he would do anything for anybody who asked, regardless of how unsavoury they were if there was a slight chance of them offering some tiny scrap of help.   I really enjoyed the world of RDR and the ending of the game, but Marston's story was really stretched thin. You can summarize Marson's flat character in only a few words, while the winner and runner ups have substantially more depth to them. "

I was taken aback when Jeff made an argument for  VVVVVV. It's a great game, albeit a difficult one, and its soundtrack is absolutely phenomenal.

Marston looks like a Clint Eastwood character, but unlike any badass CE western character he behaves like a slave not like a badass.

It is like when my parents divorced all over again.

I love the fighting in the bombcast, it makes the GOTY stuff meaningful.

Maybe I'm going insane, but that video and list were different when it was first posted. I swear it only said Bayonetta for best character.

John Marston very much almost made it if you listened to the deliberations. Brad, Ryan and Vinny all made compelling cases for him, but then Ryan shut him down by saying that he wasn't even sure if John Marston was the best character in that game (I agree with that statement; I honestly believe Dutch is up there in the league of the greatest antagonists of all time). Meanwhile, Jeff fought Marston all the way, feeling that he was very much a trope of westerns that was very well voice acted, which is fair considering the fact that he never finished the game.  Francis York Morgan is extremely compelling to me watching the first episode of the Endurance Run for each team, and the debate that EXPLODES over Mordin Solus (not as to quality of character, but purpose of character) is an absolute lock for his status as a Character of the Year winner. Oddly, I don't know how they swayed back towards Bayonetta, as they chose Mordin on the deliberations pretty solidly. Bayonetta, in my opinion, is probably a little weaker than John Marston, but I also haven't played more than an hour of Bayonetta, so my opinion is rather skewed.  All four of these characters are freaking excellent, and the only two characters I feel are missing are Dutch and Dr. Fetus. However, depending on how the rest of Amnesia plays out (I've just entered the Refinery), Alex of Brannenburg is SUPER-compelling, and I can't wait to see if his big reveal is as amazing as I want it to be. "

lmfao Francis York Morgan was funny as hell watching the Endurance Run!  He should get some sort of award (maybe worst but funniest because of that character of the year?) :P

I put Bayonetta as my game of the year (didn't play redead, brotherhood, or mass effect) so I'm glad to see it got some good wins. I have also played the crap out of Super Meat Boy (almost at 200/200) and I was happy to hear it got some mad props. I expect it to win best downloadable title.

Good to see the GiantBomb crew have a sense of humor, because the fact that John Marston isn't even a runner up let alone the winner makes me laugh.

I'm disappointed in Brad for killing York's victory, he was the best character of 2010 by far.

I can understand why Brad wouldn't want to hear more chiptunes, but the inability to appreciate something as incredible as VVVVVV's soundtrack because of reactionary dogma is really unfortunate.

I agree with Bayonetta as the best new character.  Marston may be supremely well played  and his story is better told, but he's still nothing that hasn't been done before.  Bayonetta SOLD "Bayonetta"; Marston came with "Red Dead Redemption".

I assumed awards were supposed to have winners, not a jumble of maybes and images covered in weasel words. Obviously it's a cop out, but it's really more bizarre than anything else.

Slick visual presentation on this - I love the adoption of the Kinect body silhouettes and Jeff and Ryan goofing off on the couch.

Yeah VVVVVV being a runner up! I fucking LOVE this game!

I listen to the Bombcast while I'm at work.  This makes me eager for work even and especially during the GOTY, holiday season.  Therefore the Bombcast makes work fun!

Definitely agree with the Bayonetta choices. Absolutely loved the character and the game.

Awesome job guys I'm so excited for the next few days. And to Jeff I thank you. because of your passionate defense for vvvvvv i went and bought the game from steam as soon as i heard the podcast and I agree; that game is awesome. Its challenging, but so much fun and probably has some of the best music i've heard all year. Plus I also think that Darksiders is one of the best new games and should have been in the top 3. If everyone calls you a Zelda ripoff to me that seems more like a compliment than an insult. keep up the good work guys can't wait for tomorrow

Why was the original song from RDR not even mentioned?  I was fine with what was on the list, especially the SMB stuff, but the entering Mexico tune in RDR had to have at least made a list of some kind, at least to me.
 
Also couldn't disagree more with Jeff on Limbo - that argument was frustrating, though not as bad to me as the Character stuff - got a bit tired of hearing "Morton" rather than Mordin. 

I'm kind of flummoxed by all the Bayonetta love. That game was a fun weekend rental 11 months ago, but it is in no way in the running for one of my top games of the year. It was nice that Deadly Premonition was at least given some respect, getting runner-up in two categories. I thought everyone at Giant Bomb hated that game completely but apparently its just Brad.

Ugh. The character of the year discussion lays bare the fact that the GB guys (other than Brad) totally lack an understanding of what makes a great character. Bayonetta?!? Agent York?!?!  Jesus fucking christ.

During the podcast, Jeff called Limbo "yet another 2D indie platformer with an art style." Ryan then said "well if you say 'yet another' in front of anything it makes it sound bad." Brad then chimed in with "yet another dancing game" in regards to Dance Central. 
 
Right, and Bayonetta (as much as I love it) is yet another 3rd person action game, a la Ninja Gaiden, Devil May Cry, God of War, and other shitty ones. Limbo is another 2D indie platformer with an art style.  But Darksiders is "yet another Zelda game." There's a reason why the term is "Zelda game." Because there's only one other game like it! Darksiders is like Zelda... but in high-def, with a deeper combat mechanic and a more "mature" theme. It's awesome. That said... I'm glad Bayonetta won. "

Fuck yeah, I love watching these guys play and commentate on StarCraft. I fell off and can't really keep up with the competition these days, but it's still fun to watch.
