Your Letter-Writing Campaign Finally Paid Off: Chrono Trigger Comes to Virtual Console this Monday

Nintendo launched the Wii in late 2006, and along with it, the Virtual Console. This online method for re-purposing classic games as digital downloads has existed for four and a half years. In that time, a number of bona fide classics have hit the service, and yet up until now, one particularly gaping hole remained in the catalog of available Super Nintendo titles: Square Enix's much-beloved role-playing game, Chrono Trigger.

Grumble indignantly about Squeenix's disdain for you and the rest of the series' fanbase no more, as the publisher will finally plug that Chrono Trigger-sized hole as of this Monday, May 16. The game will be available in the Virtual Console store for the standard SNES game price of 800 Wii Points ($8).

Finally, one of the greatest RPGs of all time will join such previously-released Super Nintendo masterpieces as Darius Twin, Cybernator, Vegas Stakes, Rival Turf, both goddamned Aero the Acro-Bat games, and Squeenix's own Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest. Oh, and a bunch of Mario games, I guess.

While this will likely only serve as a temporary distraction from your decade-long bitterness over Squeenix's almost remarkable unwillingness to further the series with a new installment, at least now people finally have a new way to appreciate this undeniable classic of the role-playing genre. After all, it's been, what, like three years since the DS version came out? That might as well be an eternity!

Chrono Trigger is a pretty good game. I find the cultish fervor surrounding it to be a little off putting (Yo, it's a JRPG. And you can fight the final boss whenever. And Akira Toryama did all the character designs, which means they suck), but even with the fairly flippant and disingenuous statements I just made, I actually still really like it. Just not enough to pay for it again. I dunno. Does everyone on the internet still hate Chrono Cross?

I'll probably buy that. I've never played Chrono Trigger.

On my birthday, no less.

Never played it so I'm buying it.

By far one of the easiest RPGs I have ever played, but the characters and story are the stuff of legends.

My letter writing apparently didn't work however, I asked that it be released on a console that was in some way relevant, sadly they read that as the Wii

I find this funny, because the first time I played and beat Chrono Trigger was 3 years ago...and I did it on my Wii.

It's on the DS with added stuff (though the added stuff isn't spectacular).

I like it, but I got it on DS already! I want to play EarthBound legitimately someday.

I always got stuck in the future.

Now  hy don't they make a new Chrono Trigger game that does not suck like Chrono Cross (that artwork was horrible but the music was good.) that had a bunch of poorly written characters rather than a small group of good characters  and s gameplay system that was not as cool.

Even if I used my Wii, I wouldn't feel comfortable buying digital content for it. The whole Nintendo thing is just too shaky for me.

I can't decide what console to buy this game on. I hear that every port is significantly worse than the SNES version, but which one is less worse?

Yeah you might be right.  Still with the insanity that happens at the end of Chrono Cross, I don't really know where they could go if they want to keep a coherent fiction.

Then again, it is time travel, so you can pretty much justify whatever you want if you try hard enough.  Heck they could just remake CT in 3D and it would sell a bizjillion copies.

Don't care till they make a HD version.  If they give me an HD version of Chrono Trigger  and FF6 then I will be happy.

There is a DS version out there... Why would I play the Wii version again?

In Europe it has been released on the DS.

In America I believe it came out on the SNES and the DS.

It's not on XBLA or PSN.

"  You missed off the PSone version that also came out in the U.S packaged together with final fantasy IV and called final fantasy chronicles. "

The Playstation port of this game was utter garbage (long load time just to open to menus), so I'm glad to see there's a new one I can play on my television.

Thats awesome. I'm going to get that... That game is a true classic.

I have it on DS already and I don't want to replay it on my Wii of all things. Even if I did want to replay it I'd want to do it in bed. Now, Earthbound I wouldn't mind paying money for to Nintendo.
