Dead Space was a game that I never really got around to playing. I was a huge fan of the original Resident Evils as well as RE4 and 5, so I guess that makes me a supposed fan of "survival horror?" Is this game still worth a look after almost 4 years?
Dead Space
Game » consists of 13 releases. Released Oct 14, 2008
Engineer Isaac Clarke battles a polymorphic virus-like alien infestation that turns human corpses into grotesque undead alien monsters called "Necromorphs" while trying to survive on board an infested interstellar mining ship named the USG Ishimura.
Worth a look still?
Yes, I didn't get the first one until very late last year and upon finishing it immediately picked up the second. Also, go in expecting an action game with a horror coat of paint and not the other way around; it's not really scary. It can be somewhat scary some of the time but not most of the time. This does not diminish how fantastic the games are.
Yes, absolutely.

I'll agree to this, but playing on the hardest difficulty (impossible mode, I think?), now that was genuinely pretty frightening. You could die just by like 1 or 2 hits if I recall.
I got the first Dead Space and the second one in a Steam bundle this year. I've played about 5 or so hours of Dead Space 1 but it keeps on freezing on me during certain moments (and my PC is pretty good), so it's basically forced me to stop playing it. A pity, but I'd recommend it on what I've played alone.

Well, in that case I guess I should mention that I have not played on the hardest difficulty yet.
Great atmosphere, voice acting, graphics, pacing, sound and gameplay. Play with a sweet pair of 5.1 headphones, best Resident Evil this generation.
Yes, awesome game. Some people say it's not that scary. Maybe not, but at the very least it's freaky and unnerving. Either way, it's very well done.
Personally, I thought the game was astoundingly boring in both the "survival" and "horror" department.
I say yes pick it up, it is a fantastic game. The game stops being scary if you are an all powerful engineer with a maxed plasma cutter.

I'd advise you give it a go sometime. It's pretty much the 'definite' way to play the game I think. It's gosh damn hard like you'd expect, which adds to the fear, but because the shooting is still so smooth it never felt cheap. It acts as the perfect counterbalance considering how much ammunition and health items you often tend to have in the game.
I'm gonna say that depends on the person playing. I'm working my way through Dead Soace 2 for the first time and I started on Survivalist but had to turn it down to Normal because I started to get frustrated with a certain part of the game. It most definitely adds to the fear (every fight on Survivalist, which isn't even the hardest difficulty, was immensely stressful and pretty frightening in an exciting way), but I eventually got the point where I just wanted to move on.@believer258 said:

I might give it another go sometime, but I wouldn't recommend it on a first playthrough. But again, it depends on the person playing.
@Voxel: I guess you're right. I brought it up specifically so as to prove that Dead Space can be a lot more tense under the right circumstances (more so than just the requisite headphones w/ light off) than most people give it credit for. I too played through Dead Space 2 on survivalist on my first run and saw it to the end. I felt it was a nice fit for me, though I will agree that some sections (basically when the game devolves into lazy arena combat nearing the end) did get pretty frustrating.
It's how I always like to play action-horror games though, like Dead Space along with Resident Evil 4--playing it on professional mode was my favourite way to play. Because then the action part can be supplemented with a small degree of survival-horror, forcing me to take better care of my supplies and such.
Yes, definitely worth it. It's really a great horror game which the second one didn't deliver on as much. Honestly one of my favorite games of this console generation.

If I played five or so hours of this game months ago, should I go back to it and finish it first or just jump right into the second game?
No, the first one is way better in terms of atmosphere and even gameplay. The second one isn't a bad game, just more average because the atmosphere and horror element is pretty much gone. It's like the transition from Alien to Aliens, except in a world where Aliens was made about 50 times already before that.
Yes, you should. It was in my backlog for a while but when I finally got to it, I couldn't stop until I finished. Still need to play 2 though.
Here's hoping that 3 is good despite their changes.
Yes, Dead Space is still a very fantastic game. I suggest first playing it on easy or normal, but then on hard. Also, if you find yourself not liking it at first, trust me, play through it. I got a little less than half way through it when I bought it on release date, I didn't really have any idea as to what it was other than it being a game that's kind of like RE4 (or at least that's what I was expecting before buying it), and I didn't play it for a few months after that because I didn't like it, but when I decided to go back to it I thought "well I bought it, I should probably beat it."
I did, and to my surprise it turned out to be my favorite, or one of my top favorite games ever made, so I beat it about ten more times from then to the release of two, once on PC, and nine or so times on PS3. Also, Dead Space 2 isn't scary, but I think that's still fantastic as well. For Dead Space to change my view on almost all things sci-fi, I'd consider it pretty special. If it wasn't for Dead Space, I probably wouldn't even have a Prometheus icon here. From then on, I've always replayed games I didn't like at first to see if I'll like them in time, and it's happened. For me personally though, Dead Space is special.
Oh, and some advice, to make it more scary, when you play on Impossible, take it slow, soak up all of the atmosphere you can. Also, I don't want to be the person, but... ask me anything about Dead Space if you have questions about it.
Well considering I am playing through it again for the... 5th? time or so (I recently watched Prometheus. For some reason that made me want to play Dead Space again).
You should play Dead Space. Its very VERY good. The sequel is good too if you enjoy the story and universe they put together.
@NTM: That's how I sort of was with RE5. It took me a few hours to get into it and now I really enjoy it.
I think the thing that held me off of Dead Space for so long was that it seemed really over the top and grotesque. However, it sounds like I may be off base with that one. I'll definitely give this one a look then.
Thanks everyone!
