Poll: GUI: "Gooey" or "Gee-You-Ai"? (343 votes)

"Gooey" 46%
"Gee-You-Ai" 54%

I've always thought "G-U-I" was the proper way to pronounce it, saying it like "gooey" just sounds silly to me. Apparently quite a few people prefer a latter though. Like Peter Molyneux.

Where do you stand?

#1 Posted by Snail (8776 posts) -

*the latter.

Why can't we edit polls?

#2 Posted by Donkeycow (568 posts) -

Yea, i've always said "G-U-I" as well, but i dont think either is proper, i think it's just a matter of preference.

They said gooey in Pirates of Silicon Valley. ~ That's about it.

Gooey. Like that episode of CSI

I NEVER read acronyms as words. Unless it's a really smooth word that rolls off the tongue like PETA, I feel like a moron if I don't read the letters in their order.. so Gee You Ai. That makes me feel smart.

Came in expecting this and was not disappointed!

As a Computer Science major I have only heard people call it Gooey. So that is the correct way

#8 Edited by Winternet (8258 posts) -

Isn't it an acronym? In that case it should be G-U-I.

#9 Posted by Barrock (3775 posts) -

I'm in IT and I've only heard gooey. Never heard it spelled out.

#10 Posted by Jimbo (10269 posts) -

I was always taught it as 'gooey', and tbh I'll take any excuse I can get to say 'gooey'.

Gooey.

#11 Posted by Bollard (6534 posts) -

Just to counter all the people saying they are in the industry or students, I also am a Computing student but in the UK and people I know say G-U-I. Although I've heard gooey and don't mind it either.

Gooey.

Unless you pronounce GIF as jif. I guess a GUI is a jewie.

#13 Edited by Canteu (2891 posts) -

An acronym is not a word.

G.U.I. or better yet, Graphical User Interface.

edit: an acronym is totally pronounced as a word! Learning is fun.

#14 Posted by DeeGee (2175 posts) -

My teachers in school would always call it a "gooey" but I think that's just ridiculous.

#15 Posted by Funkydupe (3458 posts) -

I've always said Gee You Eye. Not Gooey. I don't think I'd even connect what someone meant if they referred to a Gooey.

#16 Posted by JasonR86 (10031 posts) -

G-U-I

I've never heard anyone say 'gooey'. That's fucking weird.

An acronym is only an acronym because you read it as a word. If you're just pronouncing the letters then it's an initialism ;-)

Semantics, but I'm bored!

#19 Posted by Canteu (2891 posts) -

@kerned: A U.S. funded organisation? They probably have nothing to say about the rules of the English language.

#20 Edited by RazielCuts (3077 posts) -

It's Gooey. How many of you say Haytch-yew-dee, for H.U.D? No, you say Hud, case closed.

Also - a W.Y.S.I.W.Y.G editor - a wizzywig editor. What You See Is What You Get, you'd never say that all at once or by each letter.

I have a career in the software world, so I work with guys that build and design GUIs, and I have never once heard anyone say anything other than "gooey".

RADAR. SCUBA. AWOL. GIF. IMAX. BAFTA. JPG. TIFF. LASER.

Acronyms pronounced as words. Just off the top of my head.

edit: also, what @starvinggamer said.

That's hardcore!

I got very confused when people first kept saying gooey to me, and this was in university. Soyea its mostly preference but I always kindof had to make that link from then on of gooey = G.U.I.

#25 Edited by Canteu (2891 posts) -

@kerned: Hey guess what, I just learned a thing. Acronym and Initialisms are two completely different things. When it's an acronym, you can pronounce the word and it shouldn't be preceeded with the definite article "The". If it's an initialism you use "The" and pronounce it with each letter.

The F.B.I., The C.I.A., The O.E.M. etc.

Now... is it Game F A Q's or GameFacks?

Graphical You Eye

#30 Posted by Codeacious (957 posts) -

I have never met a fellow Computer Science major that spelled out the acronym.

This is definitely an acceptable answer.

Gooey. That's how we pronounce it in all my IT courses, and never met anyone who's in IT, CS, etc. pronounce it any other way.

G-U-I

I have to agree (although the "graphical you eye" answer above would also probably not raise too many eyebrows).

I'm actually a little surprised that this poll is so evenly split.

Gooy. Because it sounds better.

But then I think saying FAQ as "fak" is dumb too. It's F-A-Q GODDAMNIT!!!!!!!!!

I don't think I've ever head someone say 'gooey'. Perhaps this is a regional thing? People say U.I. as 'you-eye' not 'eww-ee', right?

#43 Posted by Chaser324 (7189 posts) -

@cameron: I agree that UI = "you eye", but GUI is totally "gooey".

As a computer engineering major, it's gooey. I've literally never, in my entire life, heard someone say each letter individually.

#45 Posted by joey (1030 posts) -

People who say "gooey" are the same people that pronounce GIF as "jiff"

I studied Computer Science for two years in an American International school and we threw around both ways of pronouncing it I think, though the "gee-you-ai" was used most often. Then I went to a Portuguese college.

a .gif is a giff, not a Gee-Ai-Eff, just as much as a .jpg is a jay-peg and not a Jay-Pee-Gee.

But gooey is just silly. Then again, I call it a Hudd or You-Ai.
