I say go for it. $5 is a good deal for a year.
Is Game Informer worth $5?
$5 sounds like an impulse buy to me. Why not? My brother used to subscribe to Game Informer while I subscribed to EGM, and Game Informer definitely seemed pretty cool back then. I assume they're still good now.
It matters not, for the EGM man cometh.
Five bucks isn't such a bad deal. But if EGM manages to retain any of its former glory once it's returned to the news stands then I'd say hold out for that. I've always felt that EGM was one of the more reputable and informative print subscriptions out there, at least in terms of the gaming press.
It's too bad that the business of gaming print is doing so poorly these days, but when you think of how much the internet has taken over and the advantages it has over these magazines it shouldn't come as too much of a surprise.

Yea, I get gameinformer because I essentially get it for free. I don't really read it, but it's neat to flip thourhg it when i'm bored.
If you do much shopping at Gamestop go there and sign up for an Edge card. You get a subscription to Game Informer for free with it. Sure, it costs $15 but you get 10% off used games for a full year. I'm sure you can find something within a year's time to save $15+ on.
Game Informer's main appeal is for its exclusive reveals on some big title games. Assassin's Creed 2 and Bioshock 2 come to mind. With all that Gamestop money behind them they are able to get scoops on things that not even Gamespot or IGN are allowed to talk about yet. However, as has been said their reviews are another matter. Their scale is weighted towards high scores (obviously to inflate Metacritic) and can be misleading until you read the score breakdown. As long as you know that it's an entertaining and informative read.
