Destructoid had named Shadow of the Colossus thier best game of the last 10 years, do you agree?
Is Shadow of the Colossus the best game of the decade?
It was very good, but the best of the decade? I don't think so.
That said, I'd buy an updated Shadow of the Colossus, like the God of War Collection, in a heartbeat.
" It was very good, but the best of the decade? I don't think so. "My sentiments exactly. What was #2?
It's their list and SotC makes sense for their #1. Destructoid are all about promoting games that make grand artistic achievements, offer original gameplay, and an experience that is unique to the medium of video games. SotC is a very original game and hits all those notes, but I don't think that makes it very fun or emotional. I found the better part of the game boring, so take that for what it's worth. My point being is that their list wasn't about games that are just flat out enjoyable (notice there is no Halo or Gears of War on the list), but games that are well designed, artistic, and original. It's not how I would make that list, but it makes sense for their #1. I don't think they are telling people that this is the one game of this generation you can live on an island with, but this is the one game you should play if you don't live on an island.
Hell no. About 10 years ago japan said 'hey, let's start making bad games' and they haven't looked back since.
Destructiod just gave a contestant in the special olympics the olympic gold medal. Like, the real one, not the one normally reserved for people who need velcrove on their shoes.

I'd agree. Looking at all the recent games I've bought sitting on my desk and the rest of their list I'd call Shadow of the Colossus a step above any of them. The fact is Shadow is a game I've come back to again and again for an interesting and enjoyable experience. As for the rest of the list... well, let's just say we don't see entirely eye to eye.
As a question to the people saying 'No' could you give your personal game of the decade? It's certainly unsurprising to see Shadow isn't held in such high regard for everyone (What with opinions being the finicky things they are) but I'd love to see what others have to say.
Yes. Yes it most definitely is.
Still, the argument of saying that Shadow of the Colossus is the best game of the decade is similar to the argument of saying that Spirited Away is the best film of the decade. Both are incredibly imaginative and emotional pieces of art, but their less widespread fame and the requirement to actually think while experiencing them limits their widespread appeal.
Dude, not even close. It's not even the best PS2 game. I couldn't consider it to even be among PS2's top 3 games.
" @Hashbrowns said:It was very very good, but I wouldn't even cal it Game of the Year, yet alone Game of the Decade. Not to mention that once you've completed it, you're never going to want to play it again, which bad considering you can beat it in about two days. Stupid list by stupid people- listing games by the decade is absurd- its just way too subjective.@Video_Game_King said:" It was very good, but the best of the decade? I don't think so. ""
" What the hell happened to Conker's Bad Fur Day? Super Smash Bros Brawl? Hell, BioShock? "'sigh'
It's up there. I don't think you can quantify which game is the "best" of a decade, though, and I'm not sure Destructoid really does either. As a whole the entire list is pretty well rounded in my opinion, if a bit Japan heavy. Lots of deserving candidates in there, better than an IGN list for sure.
no.... Ico is better... and thats not the best game of the decade either.. unless it is yours (anyones) and then it is..... but it isnt... because i said so.
I haven't played it, but I'm still gonna say no... Mostly because this is some of the games it has to contend with:
Half-Life 2
Metal Gear Solid 2, 3, 4
Halo 1, 2, 3
The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion
Super Mario Galaxy
Resident Evil 4
Knights of the Old Republic
Mass Effect
Grand Theft Auto 3, Vice City, San Andreas, IV
Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker
Gran Turismo 3, 4
Forza Motorsport 2, 3
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3
I'm not necessarily saying those games are better than Shadow of the Colossus(haven't played it after all) and it seems like it has a place on a best game ever list. For my money though, Oblivion is the best game of the last decade, followed by GTA IV, but that's just my opinion. I doubt I'd ever consider Shadow of the Colossus as the best of anything, even if I had played it, but that's just me. I guess the idea of the game doesn't appeal that much to me.
No. It was a breath of fresh air, it was different, and it made you think; but no, it's not even close to the game of the decade.
I honestly would put GTA 3 up there; that game defined this decade in games, and really was ahead of its time in offering the type of game-play that is still being perfected today.
Out of the games released in the past ten years, Half-Life 2, No More Heroes, and Metroid Prime 2 are among my most favoured. (Yes, check my top ten for 20 008, you will see GTA 4 beat out NMH, but I've since gone back and replayed both, and I have come to the realization that I prefer NMH.
So my answer to the poll question is no. Not because I do not think it is the best for other people (it may well be), but because it is far from my most favoured.
"Greatest Game of the Decade" or "Greatest Game Ever" or even "Greatest Game on Such and Such Console" really makes no sense.
How do you compare an RPG like FFX to a racing sim like Gran Turismo, or to a crazy off-the-wall game like Katamari Damacy? They're COMPLETELY different.
It's like making a "Greatest Novel of All Time"... it's ridiculous as Catcher in the Rye is impossible to compare to War and Peace or 1984. The only thing they have in common is they all use words. I'd even go so far as to say "Greatest Movie of All Time" lists are silly, but people would get mad that I didn't think Citizen Kane was the be all and end all of movies.
Rght now it seems like a lot of sites (and even magazines) are jumping on the "Best games evar"-type of lists bandwagon. I wonder why now? Because it's the end of the 00's? I guess that's as good a reason as any, and lists always make for good articles, even if it's only for people to stick their noses in the air and say, "lists are dumb", like me. ;P

"Spirited Away isn't the best film of the decade. Pan's Labyrinth is.
And that's the thing with these kinds of lists. There's always some movie, game or film that's better. Maybe you haven't experienced it, maybe it didn't suit your tastes or maybe it was exactly as good, but in a different way. That's why you can't name an official "best X of the Y".
If you aren't me, of course. Why, you ask? Because my opinion is right. Why, you ask? Because the others are wrong. Why, you ask? Occam's razor, bitches. The simplest explanation is the best one, and the simplest explanation is that I am right.
I really liked their list, but I felt it was a little heavy on the JRPGs. I think something like Skies of Arcadia, or Pikmin 2 should be removed and the original Halo should be thrown in there. But as a whole, I really liked their list and was really happy to see Mother 3 up there.
I love the ideas and the narrative, but the execution is so ham-handed and poor that it can't possibly be. Save that kind of ridiculous title for a game that is actually genre defying and masterfully crafted, not a janky-ass lag-fest that reaches points of nigh unplayability in many areas.
