I like RE1-3 equally. My favorite RE is the REmake, RE2 and RE4 close behind. I have yet to play Code Veronica, I bought a used copy from GameStop but it freezes on the intro screen. I haven't gotten around to getting another copy yet.
@The_Ish: Saving the presidents daughter from aliens, with pots of gold and merchants, isn't Resident Evil, it's a rescue game with the world Resident Evil slapped on it.

Now that we got that out of the way, I agree with the general consensus that RE4 is better than all of them. In fact, RE4 is better than most games period. Also, Resident Evil 5....let's not discuss that one. A very, very big disappointment in my opinion.

This. So what if people like 4 the best? That shouldn't make them any less RE fans, just as people who like Ocarina of Time better than Link to the Past.

So, I'm curious, how, by your reasoning, is 5 better than 4 then? 5 was even less about survival horror.
I'm guessing 4 is on the bottom of the list because its widely acclaimed to be one of the greatest games ever, and certainly the highest rated Resident Evil game.
It's cool to go against what everyone likes, right? Right???
Regardless of whether or not RE4 is the best, I wouldn't say that RE3 is the finest game out of them all. Don't get me wrong, I loved that game and played the pants off it and had my way with it when said pants were removed. It was a lean little thrillride (refreshing after the still-awesome excess of RE2) that kept me glued, and the extra Mercs mode was brilliant. But the best game in the series? Nope.
So preferring the Resident Evil remake, which is quite honestly the best survival horror game I have ever played, discounts me as a "true" Resident Evil fan, despite me having all of the novels, a Japanese background book, an Umbrella Corporation poster, a S.T.A.R.S. branded walet and extraordinarily expensive figures of Chris, Sheva and Wesker?
I love how you have got RE3 first even though out of all them RE's, RE3 was a side project and was only named RE3 because Shinji Mikami held back the project he was really working on which was intended to be RE3 which was Devil May Cry. We all know RE1, RE2 and RE4 are the best in the series
