What games do you regret buying in 2011?
apart from that, the only games i didn't really get into were games i didn't buy. Battlefield 3 and LA Noire.
Oddly enough, I don't regret buying a single game in 2011. I was able to ignore the hype on a lot of games that I could tell were not for me (Pokemon Black/White, RAGE, Dead Island, a few others). I think this is partially because I learned some hard lessons about regretting game purchases in 2010.
So to derail this topic slightly, let me get into some of the game in 2010 that I thought weren't worth buying! Kirby's Epic Yarn was great and all, but I could've just rented that game and finished the game and gotten just as much out of it; I plan on renting Kirby's Return to Dreamland in the next few weeks. Metroid: Other M had average gameplay, but the boss battles were underwhelming in their simplicity, and the writing was awful compared to how solid the lore and world-building was in the Metroid Prime series.
And I preordered Puzzle Quest 2, which turned out to be a terrible sequel to the amazing Puzzle Quest; there's about 1/5th as much writing in the game, as instead of traveling across the land in a LotR-style quest, you just go deeper into this one sunken tower in a plot ripped directly off of Diablo 1. You hardly meet any characters, and most characters that can "join" you stop talking forever once they do, unlike the previous game. Puzzle Quest 1 had a bunch of quests that would consist of going to a place, doing 1 or 2 fights, then finishing the quest, and my hours with the game passed by like a breeze. In Puzzle Quest 2, you get a quest, then have to fight through like 15 of the same fucking monsters on one floor until you finish it, and it's incredibly unrewarding because of how brief all of the quest dialogue is and how much I don't give a shit about any of the characters or the overall story. Puzzle Quest 1 was highly customizable, in that you learned spells as you leveled up, could "steal" some spells from enemies, could choose a mount who would provide you with a "mount" spell, and you could forge your own items with whatever attributes you want. In Puzzle Quest 2, they basically cut all of that out and you only learn spells through leveling up, and there is a sidequest that only teaches you basically 2 different spells, except they're copy-pasted across all 5 colours of mana to make it into "ten" spells. And equipment is boring now, because instead of each piece giving you a unique perk, most of them just raise you defense, except for whatever weapons you can hold in your hands; however, while there were a couple interesting weapons, there wasn't enough variety or differing effects, so mostly you could just look at the Action Points Spent:Damage Done ratio and pick the best weapon.
Puzzle Quest 2 was just disappointing in every possible way.
Earth Defense Force Insect Armageddon and You Don't Know Jack. Thankfully they were not that much money.
The only purchase I slightly regret was spending £25 on Assassin's Creed 2 and Brotherhoood a couple of days before they were going at £10 for both in the steam summer sale. They're both great games, though, and I feel I still got my money's worth out of them.
L.A. Noire and if not for the free CoD Elite subscription and free Droid Incredible 2, i would probably add MW3 to that as well.
Brink was pretty bad, but i only paid like 30 bucks for it and sold it back for like 17...
And a list of games i bought and haven't had the chance to play or didn't get my money's worth:
Deus Ex (havent played it)
Rage
Uncharted (Haven't played it)
Disgaea 4 (Haven't played it)
and more that i probably can't think of..... i bought a lot of stuff i just haven't had the chance to play... still haven't had the chance to enjoy myself at skyrim or MW3 or some other stuff.
Wii - Metroid: Other M. I expected some Ninja Gaiden mixed with Metroid Prime, got neither.
PS3 - L.A. Noire. I missed the part on the box that tells you this is essentially a point-and-click adventure game.
PC - Dragon Age 2. Holy shit, Dragon Age 2. This game takes the cake. If only I could return Steam purchases; easily one of the worst ways I've spent $60, ever.
Dragonage 2 - what a load of old shit.
Oh and Dirt 3 - my personal biggest dissapointment of the year.
Battlefield 3. Holy shit was the single player lame! If I can't enjoy the single player, then I really can't have fun with multiplayer. Really loved the Battlefield 2 : Bad Company story in all it's goofiness, but 3 was such a let down.
I'm really disappointed by Skyrim. It made improvements over Oblivion, but it still plays like its 5-years-old predecessor (which I loved.... 5 years ago).
Skyrim. 90 hours of my life, GONE.
Kidding. Other than it being dreadful for my health, it's amazing.
Probably Killzone 3 for me. The single player narrative failed to grab me (never finished it) and the PSN outage killed any interest I had in the multiplayer.
For the record, I really enjoyed LA Noire.
If DA2 came out this year then that. I knew it was going to be terrible from everything I seen about it, but my love of the first game made me try it anyway. Such a terrible game. Also Dead Island was terrible too. The combat was so boring and repetitive I couldn't even get past the first hub world area. Then the whole story/mission structre was about as enthralling as a mindless wow quest of go here, kill that, return, rinse repeat.
I agree LA Noire was a disappointing, but short? I think the main problem with LA Noire was that it was too long. The game dragged on and it would have benefited from some tighter editing and streamlining.Honestly, my memory of it is a bit fuzzy, but there are some parts of it like the Arson desk and the Traffic desk that I thought went by too quickly. In general, cases went by real fast, especially if you had your partner driving instead of yourself.
I've got to say, thanks to the Quick Looks and Reviews here at Giant Bomb I've had a great gaming year. Nothing I regret so far and I've tried some really cool stuff I wouldn't normally try out.
I see a lot of Dues Ex Human Revolution on peoples' lists :( That makes me sad. I thought the game part was pretty good. Yeah the story and characters were terrible. I liked the game in much the same way as I enjoyed parts of Metal Gear Solid 4 - pretty fun gameplay elements, some neat encounters, crap story and dialog.
I bought a 360 this year and I haven't used it for more than 2 hours, thought the Giant Bomb xbmc app was a 360 thing, how wrong I was.
Dragon Age 2 being a close 2nd.

I guess Rage. I liked it but I guess if I had to pick one I shouldn't have bought its that one
MvC3. I preordered the special edition because I loved me some MvC and MvC2. Within a half hour of playing, my PS3 stopped reading the disc. Being a launch PS3, it was way out of warranty, and being "omg MvC!" I -needed- to keep playing. I went out and bought a new PS3 for $299 or whatever it was at the time. Plus tax. I played it until I beat it with every character and haven't touched it since. None of the PS3 exclusives that came out since are must buy titles to me.
That's $400+ I won't be getting back. ><
Also, since all the cool kids are doing it, Dragon Age 2.
I played it and beat it. It only took ~20 hours. Haven't touched it since. DA:O? That :O is the face you'd make if you saw the hours I have logged in that and the expansion.
If I had never played DA2, I'd be waiting with bated breath for 3. As it is, I'd rather buy two random Kinect games.
