You decide. Not me.
Moderators? Over bearing judges or necessary?
There are no threads that need to be locked. So what if it's pointless or offensive? It's just a thread. That's how I feel about all this forum stuff. Moderators feel the need to moderate things that aren't necessary. They should delete the porn and the spam, but leave all the pointless shenanigans be, since there are people like me who enjoy YouTube Spam and rants written by drunks or people who aren't good at English.
Why did you make a thread about your previous topic being locked? If you have a question ask the mod, not others.
" Don't talk shit about the mods. They're cool. "Especially here. Since I've nothing more to add, enjoy this.
What did you do, OP? I've never been banned on here. I've written a load of weird sweary stuff here but it's never been aimed at anybody so maybe because it wasn't targetted so wasn't a problem. Got banned on a site where they bloodly love me a few times for next to nothing. If it was purely just for swearing then that's bad because sometimes it really breaks your internal flow if you can't write the way the words are coming in your mind.
If it makes you feel better, I was going to flag your lollipop thread but CitizenKane locked it before I could.
There are very specific rules regarding what constitutes as spam and what can pass off as a legitimate conversation-worthy topic. You're lollipop topic was straddling that line and the moderator made the decision to lock it. It's not the end of the world, but this topic is not going to make you a whole lot of friends here on the site...
But as I asked him, why HypoXenophobia? It was quite specific to an 80's reference in an effort to negate any innuendo that you may have contrived. Isn’t “Off Topic” vague enough to begin with that a pop culture reference can be openly discussed without censorship? I needed the quest, I saw the commercial online, I posted it. I think if you look through there are more vulgar things. Again, it was off topic.
http://www.giantbomb.com/guides/forum-rules/1069/" Hey I like mods. I'm all for them. But when Kyreo can curse like that and get away with it, and I make a non-vulger 80's ref. I just think that's where the issue lies. Hence why the thread was a question and not a statement of "fact." "
There ain't nothin' in the mother fuckin' rules about a cocksucker swearin' yo!
I once made a poll about whether chicks who can pee standing up are hot or not. It got locked by MB. I don't see how that's any more or less offensive than a crap thread titled "Post something about the user above you" or whatever that crap thread is titled and the dozens of other shitty, pointless threads that are for some reason still open.
That said, the mods here are alright. Not perfect, but alright.
The mods aren't perfect, but I'd rather see over-moderation on these forums than none at all. As long as mods are reasonable and are actually available for discussion of a lock, I'm totally fine with them.
They are a necessary evil, but there have been more then one occasion where the sites mods have locked a thread for no good reason. Obviously they are human, but some times it seems like it's a crap shoot on whether or not a thread gets locked. I have seen some really bad threads that are left alone to go on forever, while perfectly innocent ones get locked in minutes. Or threads that are deemed "Youtub spam" just because some one included a video with a short question or statement to get a topic going.
My personal favorites are when you come across some thread where mods have posted in them themselves, then one of them having a bad day comes a long and locks the thread because they don't like the topic. The biggest problem is with off topic. The entire point of that thread is to talk about things not related to video games, but I can't begin to count the number of times that the mods have come in, locked a thread and said some stupid thing like this is a video game website don't talk about this. IT'S FUCKING OFF TOPIC! THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT OF OFFTOPIC!
As for "vulgar garbage [being] spewed by others", please let us know if you feel people are breaking the rules. Our PM inboxes are always open, please send us a message when you see rule breaking on the site. We can't be everywhere at once, we rely on users like yourself informing us of people breaking the rules.
And as for moderators being moderated - we are in a way. The staff are very aware of the way we moderate things, and we always follow their guidelines. It's their site, not ours, we are merely following their wishes.
"I can't begin to count the number of times that the mods have come in, locked a thread and said some stupid thing like this is a video game website don't talk about this. IT'S FUCKING OFF TOPIC! THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT OF OFFTOPIC! "We never lock topics because they are off-topic. When a moderator references "this is a website, about video games", they're referencing this video thing. That isn't the primary reason we're locking the thread, and we will mention why we're locking it in the comment too, it's just a humorous reference to go along with the more serious lock comment.
" There are no threads that need to be locked. So what if it's pointless or offensive? It's just a thread. That's how I feel about all this forum stuff. "I completely agree. If threads are pointless then let them be ignored rather than locked.
" There are mods? It doesn't show. "I feel the same way.
GB needs to throw down more ban-hammers.
In my humble oppinion, the mods should be more brutal.
i see loads of retarded and stupid off-topic threads that shouldnt exist.
They should make one thread for the countless "Should I get this?" threads and delete the rest. Same goes for all the other constantly repeated threads. Yet when you reply to an old post so you don't clog up the forum somebody has to say "Oh nos! Necrophiliac!"
That goes for most forums.
Seeing these boards recently, totally necessary... I wish we had them in real life... not cops, just people allowed to slap stupid people.
" Children always have issues with authority. "Hah, I'm sorry but that might actually be the one thing on this forum that has made me laugh
The idea that being a moderator means you have authority, I mean :P
" @gingertastic_10 said:Mind. Rape." Don't talk shit about the mods. They're cool. "Especially here. Since I've nothing more to add, enjoy this. "
" @Video_Game_King said:Or, rape mind.." @gingertastic_10 said:Mind. Rape. "" Don't talk shit about the mods. They're cool. "Especially here. Since I've nothing more to add, enjoy this. "
I posted a YouTube video that got locked, but I've been to unmoderated forums and so often it just degenerates into 13 year olds (either literally or in mind) spamming garbage topics that have zero conversational relevance. Why don't people just "ignore" it? They can't, it often gets posted so fast that real forum topics get scrolled down, and then people feel the need to go on a topic and say how stupid it is (which only gives the little fuckers the attention that mommy and daddy aren't), so the post just gets shot right to the top again. I'm happy the mods are here to make sure people are actually discussing rather than just shouting. (Sorry for the run-on sentence nature, but I'm in a terrible hurry...which gives some indicator of my priorities)
The mods are fine. If anything, I think they should be stricter on these boards. People who insist on acting like douchebags or intentionally contributing nothing of value to a discussion should be slapped around more often.
Anything to help promote quality discussion over pointless memes, gibbering children, and generally unfunny idiocy, I say.
They do their jobs. Sure, in my opinion, there are some threads that are unnecessarily locked. But they do their jobs, and they aren't as bad as the Gamespot moderators.
I would rather have the mods lock more threads then necessary than the opposite. The guys at Giant Bomb do a great job.
Moderators is necessary so long they remain civil themselves. They're moderators to keep the forum somewhat clean but when they act like dicks themselves, then what's the point of caring about being civilized yourself?
Had cases where I've made simple mistakes on other sites and been faced by snide remarks or just dickish responses from Mods before they lock the thread. Set a good example or they shouldn't be mods, imo.
