I was wondering if it was the same for everyone, in mine he was threatening me and then it appeared he was going to shoot me when someone else in my party shot him!

If Wrex did die then you did something wrong.

Wrex never dies if you play the game right *gives threatening squinty eyes*.

I beat his ass down for talking back to me about his people.  Then while on the ground I shot that animal in the head and ended the burden he had on the rest of my crew.

In one of the times I ended up just capping him square in the face.  However, in every following run-through I made sure he lived.  Shepherd.  

Well he isn't dead in my main playthrough which is the one I'm bringing over to Mass Effect 2 but he died in one of my playthroughs 
 
He was threatning me but I was refusing to shoot him because I didn't want him to die, so I tried reasoning with him but it didn't work and Ashley ended up shooting him to save me 
 
So I've never actually killed Wrex 

 You can shoot wrex or ashely can. When i went though my renegade, i shot him.
 
Unless you had enough renegade or paragon points in your stats, then a new dialogue option would show, either red or blue to show if it was a paragon or renegade persuasion technique and you could prevent him from shooting

I wish Wrex was dead in my game.

As long as you have at least the ability to persuade or intimidate, you can easily guarantee he won't die.

Exactly.  You can talk it down to the point where he lives.  I always invest in the conversation stuff, so useful.  Here it saved Wrex. "

 If I remember right, can't you A) kill wrex, B) destroy the cure for the genophage but Wrex lives, or C) save the cure and Wrex lives. I wonder if there will be 3 seperate outcomes in ME2 for the 3 different ways you can resolve the Wrex situation. Brad mentioned on the bombcast that if Wrex lives he becomes the krogan king, and your reception on the krogan planet will be vastly different in ME2, but I wonder if that only happens if you get the 3rd outcome. "

If you are a total ass face then yea he can die, but at least you'll get rewarded for your jerk-ness for seeing Wrex's race in utter conflict in ME2, rather then him being the ruler of his people if he's alive.

Im still not there on my ruthless sheperd playthrough that i will take to me2, can i save him with intimidate? 

After doing wrex's sidequest I simply told him it was for the best of his species  and he gave up, he clearly valued my friendship.
I really cant wait for ME2 now so i can see my favourite space frog.

Pretty sure me or someone in my party ended him, either way he isn't coming back in ME2 for me. :(

First playthrough Ashley shot him, partly my fault for my finger slipping when making dialogue choices... 
I reset my console and replayed from the start of that planet and saved him 2nd time round... well worth it.
After that the choice between Ashley and Kaiden was clear. :)

On my renegade file, I shot him in the face when he wouldn't listen to reason.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the cure is destroyed, which is the whole reason why Wrex turns on you in the first place. A shame, because it would have made sense to rescue the cure before blowing up the facility. But I guess that would be too flowery an outcome for a game like this. "

I'll probably play it one more time all the way through before I go back to classes. When I first played it Wrex died, so I reloaded a save and had to repeat all of virmire until I leveled up and put enough points in charm/intimidate, to keep him alive.
