Nintendo R&D1 is Nintendo's oldest internal development studio. This team has developed many of Nintendo's most popular games, from WarioWare to Super Metroid.
Overview
Nintendo R&D1 (Research and Development 1) was the first of Nintendo's many development teams. The company was founded in 1984 (and headed by famed Game Boy created Gunpei Yokoi), upon Nintendo's entrance into the video game market. The team has been behind many of Nintendo's popular franchises, such as Metroid, Ice Climber, Kid Icarus, and Wario Land. In addition, many of R&D1's employees have gone on to other companies (in 1986, many employees moved on to Intelligent Systems). R&D1 was also behind Nintendo's Game Boy, developing many of the console's most popular games (such as Super Mario Land). In 1996, Gunpei Yokoi left the company and Takehiro Izushi took over R&D1. Later, in 2005, Nintendo R&D1 (as well as R&D2 and R&D3) were merged with Nintendo Entertainment Analysis and Development (Nintendo EAD).Games
