All-Time Favourites!

Some of my all-time favourite games!

List items

  • 'Extraction Point' is what I'd consider an unfairly-maligned expansion. It retains many elements of the original 'F.E.A.R.' that I love (the frenetic combat, the style, the atmosphere and horror) and bolts it onto a simple-yet-excellent premise: you're in a City with an incredibly powerful supernatural force, so you need to find Helicopter Extraction and get out of there! Inevitably, you will encounter this supernatural force while shooting your way through the Replica Battalion trying to kill you while escaping themselves. The result is an absolute blast.

  • The origin of 'F.E.A.R.' is the combination of two excellent things (John Woo-style gunplay and J-Horror) with Monolith's talent for creating immensely satisfying shooters. The result is one of my Top Ten Games of All Time, without a doubt. Truly something special.

  • My Game of the Year for 2016. Instantly memorable characters and settings. Superb, varied gameplay. And to top it all off, the usual Blizzard polish and long-term value-for-money. This game kept 'Hitman' from being my Game of the Year. That's how good 'Overwatch' was, and is, to me.

  • 'F.E.A.R. 2: Reborn' has you playing as a Replica Soldier who begins receiving strange visions of Paxton Fettel (a key character in 'F.E.A.R.') and feels compelled to act on them. This one features an extended Mech Suit sequence in a building under construction at the very start - and all the exploding brilliance that implies therein. While less scary than the core game, horror doesn't seem to be the focus for 'Reborn'. A bloody good time overall, if inessential to the story of 'F.E.A.R. 2' proper.

  • 'F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin' is a satisfying game of meaty guns, nice visual and audio design and an interesting story. While it doesn't quite come together like the first game (the melee combat - while present and effective as before - doesn't flow as well between bouts of shooting this time around), it remains a lot of fun (the Mech Suits are a delight) with plenty of scares and a truly memorable ending.

  • A game that you shouldn't pay full price - or even a high price - for, but one you should absolutely play. 'Kane and Lynch 2' is not a conventionally enjoyable game. It's a game about selfishness, the infliction of pain and withering failure.

Its style is unlike anything else I've ever seen in a game (Tip: Shakycam can be turned off in the Options menu, should it make you feel sick.)

I recommend it as a unique experience. It won't take you long to complete. It's mediocre in a lot of ways, and yet, ultimately, it's completely fascinating.

  • My runner-up for Game of the Year 2016. Vast, interesting maps full of detail, the best gameplay in a 'Hitman' game to date and a continually-expanding arsenal of realisations and equipment gained from actual player experience and experience points, respectively. Add to this the dark comedy of the thing and its contributions to Giant Bomb (if you've not seen 'Hitdan: Brad Money', as I took to calling it, I'd advise doing so upon having played the 'Episodes' that comprise the game's 'First Season' yourself. The content 'Hitman' has provided for the site is plentiful and glorious.)

  • A world unlike any other I've played in, and a game which gets first-person traversal right. The sequel - while improving on the latter in particular - doesn't feel quite as special as this one. Also, this one's available on Steam and subject to regular discounts (compared to its sequel.)

Also, while most of Rhianna Pratchett's story was gutted from the final release, what's there gives the game a nice sense of character.

  • What a visually beautiful, satisfying and occasionally-quite-fiddly game I wasn't very good at for half the time I was playing it. Also, my favourite realisation of the 'WAAAGH!' Tower in any 40K game.
