Games of the Decade (2010 to 2019)

List items

  • One of the very few games I've replayed, and I think I only stopped after finishing three times. In a row. Whilst I don't normally like the 'mission to get McGuffin here, then next mission to get McGuffin' format like most JRPGs have, the missions were complex enough so that you forget about it. They leaned on the shooter aspect more, which works for me.

  • South of France. Open world racing. Highly accessible game, and easy to get in and out of. I was playing this for about 3 years after it came out. The sensation of driving is amazing.

  • Also a game I finished 3 times before I quit, it lets me be the perfectionist I am. Each section is a mini puzzle you have to finish and the options are numerous.

  • The ultimate multiplayer party series, and the ultimate version, which packed the most songs. Great memories partying at home. And who doesn't want to do drums??

  • 400+ hours later, my wars and plans for world domination never get old. My desert island game.

  • Again hits my itch for perfectionism. No Splinter Cell this decade except Conviction, this took over. The mix of sense of humour, creativity and accessibility are unmatched for this kind of game.

  • Partly because it shattered expectations as it was marketed as a multiplayer game primarily, the story is short but not too-short, the city was huge but varied enough, and had an addicting Civ-like system where you're always running something in the background, whether sending assassins out, or managing profits. The AC game before they got too bloated.

  • The mix of Greek mythology, likeable characters and the height of AC gameplay counter even the annoying level-gating system, where enemies level up as you do. Made m still want to keep up, so this is the one flaw, but everything else is so good, it carries it beyond to this spot.

  • The most effective implementation of Choose Your Own Adventure in a video game I've ever seen, the charming story and steampunk world make it a winner.

  • The game let you add Michael Jordan in your franchise. The best b-ball game of its generation.

  • In my first run I opted not to kill anyone and only 'accidentally' did so when a trap I set at the beginning of the level killed the enemy as they were walking him after arresting him. Perfectionism in a first person stealth I didn't know I wanted.

  • Unlike the clunky, almost puzzle-game-like controls of previous TRs, this one is more free form and tells a fairly tight adventure, no matter how straightforward. The best reboot I can imagine.

  • A down decade for the staples of the genre, this is the 2 player fighting game of the generation. The simple controls contribute to an accessible back-and-forth fight experience.

  • Strangley, 2K14's graphics remain superior to even 2K19's, and the game flows easier here. Easily my go-to game of its generation, and only stopped because the roster got too old. How many 82 game seasons did I actually play through? Even my saves getting deleted for a while didn't stop me from starting over.
