2014 Top 10 +

2014 is a year that will be know for having many good game offerings, but no real GREAT games.

I feel that this year many games were close to being great but all fumbled by either lacking content, being to repetitive, having technical problems or just not being good enough.

2014 was also a good year for horror. Between P.T, Alien isolation, The Evil Within and heck even the Moira Asylum in Thief. Hopefully this is a sign for all the great horror games to come.

I will be ranking games based on my personal experience with them and not by what is popular or collectively considered as good.

I also played plenty of games that came out in 2013, but I will keep this list strictly to 2014 games.

List items

  • (Game of the Year 2014)

A very love hate relationship,I poured in a lot of hours in this game (my most played ps4 game, 240 hrs) and think it's really well designed in some areas. However the repetitive nature of the game reared it's ugly face and really disheartened me. I still admit liking this game quite a bit, It's a solid base to build upon later. However I should have jumped in later when more content was added (The Taken Kind/ Rise of Iron/Complete Collection)

Highlights: Imaginative worlds, Awesome designs, Fun with others

    Peak Moment: 6 Person Raid

  • Atmosphere is one of my favorite elements in video games, and this game has it mastered. Also the tension and excitement of knowing an alien can be skulking around was really riveting.

    Highlights: Authenticity, Atmosphere, Alien

Peak Moment: Inching your way through the dark corridors of the station while being hunted by the Alien.

  • My first ps4 game and I finished it in 1 day, and then ended up platinuming it in 3. This was a really great opener to the new generation, and a really damn fun game to play.

Highlights: Awesome and Unique Powers, Fun Traversal, Great Visual Spectacle

Peak Moment: Fighting multiple enemies while zipping across the battlefield using multiple traversal options and powers.

  • Another heavy GOTY contender for some, but to me the game just had way to many bugs and weird design decisions to be that high on the list. Thankfully there is still plenty of good as well, like the characters and the scope and size of the game.

With a lot of it's problems ironed out it could have easily jumped a few spots upward.

Highlights: Good Characters, Plenty of Content, Divers Environments

Peak Moment: Venturing into unknown lands alongside your companions .

  • While not the GOTY some made it sound like, it is indeed a good game no doubt. The Nemesis system is the closest thing to a next generation feature in a game so far while most of the rest of the game is borrowed ideas from other games. The story is what really brings the game down.

Highlights: The Nemesis System, Mix of Stealth and Combat, Orc Personalities

Peak Moment: Taking revenge on the Orc that you helped make stronger.

  • Large world, opportunities for fun, some nice variety, and great looking environments. Climbing towers and liberating outposts was actually fun, more so then the regular quests.

Highlights: Exotic and Pretty Location, Freeform Fun, Good Villain

Peak Moment: Taking over an enemy outpost/base using various weapons and tactics at your disposal, all the while you are treated to a gorgeous view.

  • The graphics are just amazing, most next gen looking game of 2014, I simply get mesmerized driving in this game. Great soundtrack as well.

Highlights: Great Visuals, Good Feel of Speed, Some Good Designs

Peak Moment: Racing on a gorgeous track with the rain kicking in amplifying the realism and you seemingly being transported there in a zen like state.

  • I love to have played 2 good horror games this year, TEW is not a return to form for Shinji Mikami but it is a solid and entertaining horror action title. It's also the closest a game has come to remind me of RE4, but sadly it did not match it's quality.

Highlights: Imaginative Monster Designs, Unpredictable, Moments of Great Pacing.

Peak Moment: Being reminded of Resident Evil 4

  • I didn't have much expectations for this game but after hearing people talk about it in such high regards I tried it myself. It's a good game, good enough to go through it a second time. But I still felt like it missed something to be truly great.

Highlights: Good Pacing and Length, Great Characters, Interesting Setting

Peak Moment: Being reminded of Half-Life 2 and Resistance 3

  • Most fun couch multiplayer.

  • Very hated by many, this game turned out to be quite fun and not bad at all. It's a good reminder that hype can end in disappointment and that you should always try a game for yourself before passing judgement.

Highlights: Pretty good stealth, Some cool abilities, City feels alive

Peak Moment: Moving unseen through a compound making use of your hacking abilities.

  • I pretty much boycotted the series until recently, and to my surprise CoD is not at all bad. It also helps that advanced warfare is probably one of the better games in the series.

Highlights: Slightly changes up the old Call of Duty formula, Solid single player, Fun multiplayer

Peak Moment: Using the exo movement to carefully outmaneuver and take out an enemy player.

  • Loved the art-style and the journey.

  • Better then it had any right to be and I'm no fan of the Borderlands world.

  • An artistic emotional game. Nothing really bad about it, but it's not a very complex game either.

  • P.T.

  • A very pretty game with a great sense of place and atmosphere. But sadly that's kind of all it has going for it. Everything else just fell bellow potential.

  • Just a short "tech demo", but gave a nice glimpse into MGSV.

  • -Eternal Collection-

The game is very repetitive (more noticeable then with most games) and quite mindless for the most part. By the end you are so used to mowing down waves of hellspawn that hell just doesn't seem so terrifying anymore, the easy difficulty makes it even more of a joke.

The only one that should be feared is your Character that pretty much reaches godlike status by the end of the game with nothing really able to put up much of a challenge.

It's a good game to turn off your brain and just mow down demons and watch your level grow while having something on in the background.

The Story was fairly mediocre as well and didn't really care for many of the characters.

The one saving grace is that the game makes you want to reach that next level and see what new skills you character has. It's good at making you want to waste your time.

Definitely more fun together with friends to make a fairly boring gameplay cycle more interesting. Or if you just a power fantasy to go with your favorite podcast.

The new act and new classes add some more content that isn't a whole lot better then what was already there. But if you were caught by the grinding bug then here's some more stuff to grind.

  • As a fan of Thief: Deadly Shadows, I was quite dissapointed by this reboot. But there is enough decent stuff in this that it's worth a play, at a reasonable price.

  • Great art and ideas marred by bad direction.

A disjointed and at time frustrating experience of what could have been a truly amazing follow up to the solid, albeit equally imperfect, Castlevania Lords of Shadow 1.

  • Surprisingly good game, really made me hate the villains.

  • Surprisingly fun multiplayer game. Good looking also.

  • Creative and adorable, but also a bit forgettable.

  • Pretty decent 2d sidecroller.

  • I already like Second Son and this is just a little content.

    Liked the new arena.

Feels like going back in time and playing Gothic 1 and 2, which is both good and bad at the same time.

Very janky lower budget RPG but with heart and a dose of nostalgia.

    Nice style.

Enjoyed driving from one side of the map to the other. Haven't delved much into the rest.

  • Free 3rd person MOBA Title, love mythology and gods, game got better with time. Some of the skins are cringe inducing.

    Pretty decent stealth.

Tried it many times but after the 3rd or 4th boss I kind of just gave up. It's too sluggish and ends up feeling more frustrating then anything.

    X ray shots are fun.

Cool little twist on a crime adventure game. Though pretty mediocre.

A very mediocre but still quite enjoyable RPG, up until the end. Did not want to waste any more time on the final boss which seemed much more difficult then I cared for.

Glad to see the studio improve more after this game as it was quite rough in many places.
