Don't get your hopes up, Bethesda's more interested in making money and avoiding controversy than they are in being "edgy." They've cow-towed to pressure before, so don't expect them to challenge the status quo in any way. So, I leave you with this lovely image from Prey:

They're some kind of bio-mechanical enhancement. You can see them rotating like a camera aperture in some of the cutscenes, so that's my best guess.
