My Favorite Characters from Video Games

Be they badass, comical, or somewhere in between, this is a list of my favorite characters from video games.

List items

  • "I'm the guy that's gonna burn your house down... with the lemons!"

  • "Your test results say you are a horrible person. We weren't even testing for that."

  • "Police brutality, coming up!"

  • "I'm here to kick ass and chew bubblegum, and I'm all out of gum." (Also Rowdy Roddy Piper's line in They Live)

  • "Take a lick on the salty taint of doom, you brain-dead biker whores!"

  • "You crack me up, little buddy."

  • I'm a bazooka, Sam, a BAZOOKA! Oh, just give me a moment to savor this. Oh yeeessssss...

  • "If he's pretending to do the word jumble, he's with The Knights of Malta..."

  • "Guybrush Threepwood, mighty pirate!"

  • "Mancomb Seepgood!"

  • "Whenever I smell asphalt, I think of Maureen. That's the last sensation I had before I blacked out; that thick smell of asphalt. She said she'd fix my bike. Free. No strings attached. I shoulda've known then that things were never that simple. Yeah, when I think of Maureen, I think of two things: asphalt... and trouble."

  • "Mommy, how come all the other kids in class get new mops and I don't?"

  • Seriously? Attractive, dark-haired Brit with a sultry voice? Yeaaaah, that's a low-blow, Naughty Dog.

  • Nathan Fillion without the... uhhh... Nathan Fillion.

  • Slightly boring, and not quite as devilishly attractive as Chloe, but I've got a soft spot for lithe, tough blondes.

  • I really like Madison Paige. It's hard to pinpoint why, specifically, but she's intriguing without falling victim to a ton of video game woman cliches. She's unafriad to use her body for what she needs, and despite the game's use of frequent nudity, her sexuality isn't thrown in the gamer's face as much as, say, Lara Croft or Tifa Lockheart. She's a strong, attractive character with some great scenes and a likable personality. That's good enough for me.

  • It's Johnny Gat. Plus, he's voiced by that dude from Lost!

  • He'll bring down the wrath of God upon your sorry ass.

  • Friendly, easy-going, and hates radiation. What's not to like?

  • Heavy!

  • Great Scott!

  • Monkey and Trip are two of the better characters in video games I've ever seen. Their evolving interaction with each other is the glue that holds the fantastic Enslaved together.

  • I really think Trip is one of the more ideal female protagonists I've seen in a video game. She's not invincible, but she's a survivor nonetheless. There's a nice blend between vulnerability and feral instinct that I love.

  • When I saw the advertisement for Tekken 2 in magazines, I was pretty blown away at how different the characters looked from any other fighter of the time. When my parents asked what game my brother and I would like for Christmas that year, I responded with Tekken 2 thanks in large part to this guy right here. Skip forward many, many moons, and here I am, still considering Paul Phoenix to be one of the best fighting game characters to date. I only wish Tekken did more with its story rather than crappy 10 second ending videos.

  • I haven't even finished Yakuza 4 yet, and already I know I want Yakuza 5 to be about this guy. His combat mechanics are breezy and fun, his storyline is intriguing as is his backstory, and he's got a ton of potential to go anywhere in the series' future.

  • Might be a heavy contender for my favorite protagonist from games. Holy crap, he became hilarious in SR:3.

  • I spent three quarters of the damn game thinking that it was NAYTHAM. Boy, do I feel like a horse's patoot.
