Games Finished 2013

I made one of these lists for 2012. That went surprisingly well, somehow I stuck with it pretty accurately through a whole year. I'll try and beat last year's total of 71 games; which might be tricky, but it's worth a shot.

January '12 vs '13: 7/20. +13

February '12 vs '13: 3/4. +1

March '12 vs '13: 1/10. +9

April '12 vs '13: 5/14. +9

May '12 vs '13: 5/10. +5

June '12 vs '13: 8/3. -5

July '12 vs '13: 17/19. +2

August '12 vs '13: 0/7. +7

September '12 vs '13: 1/

October '12 vs '13: 2/

November '12 vs '13: 7/

List items

  • PC - Steam

    02/01/13 - Beat the story

    Time: 11 Hours Played

Notes: A damn solid game despite first impressions. Played with Xbox 360 pad.

  • PC - Steam

04/01/13 - Beat the main mode

    Time: 9 Hours Played

Notes: A great game. It's a real shame that Bizarre Creations is no more. Played with Xbox 360 pad.

  • PC - Steam

    07/01/13 - Beat the game

    Time: 9 Hours Played

Notes: Really difficult - I'm surprised I beat it. Played with Xbox 360 pad.

  • PC - Steam

    07/01/13 - Beat the story

    Time: 15 Hours Played

Notes: I like the story, and love the atmosphere and music; but damn is this a bad port. I don't remember if the original PS2 game was very technically sound or not, but I remember the Xbox 360 version being bad, and this is probably worse. I played all three, but I probably should have stopped on the first. Played with Xbox 360 pad.

  • PC - Steam

    08/01/13 - Beat the campaign

Time: 5 Hours Played (That sounds really short)

Notes: Amazing. I don't know why I didn't think too much of it when it was released, but seeing it on some GOTY lists made me pick it up when it came on sale. The artistic design and story were great, a lot different from a typical FPS. The gameplay and engine - which at first I thought were rather archaic (in the demo), turned out to be pretty strong, especially the difficulty of being overwhelmed instead of fighting bullet sponges all the time. A good performance from Nolan North too, it really outweighed the distraction from recognizing his voice. Played with mouse & keyboard.

  • PC - Steam

    10/01/13 - Beat the game

    Time: 3 Hours Played

Notes: This game ran horribly on my last PC, so I never really got into it. Despite some very annoying elements, like two of my weapons being much more dangerous to myself than any enemy and really punishing and loose platforming elements - it wasn't bad. Played with mouse & keyboard.

  • PC - Steam

    11/01/13 - Beat the game

    Time: 94 Minutes Played (apparently?)

Notes: I love this game. Not including Humble Indie Bundles, I own 3 copies of it. Might have to play through it at least once a year. Played with Xbox 360 pad.

  • PC - Steam

12/01/13 - Finished 1st in all the Grand Prix on Advanced difficulty (credits played)

    Time: 5 Hours Played

Notes: Not as good as I was hoping. It's not as polished as I remember Mario Kart being, or as skill-based as Blur. It wasn't the best port either, it hitches up sometimes and I sort of regret getting the Sonic pack primarily for this game. It wasn't terrible though, I just expected too much I guess. Played with Xbox 360 pad.

  • PC - Steam

14/01/13 - Finished the story on the medium difficulty

Time: 12 Hours Played (lots of idling)

Notes: A solid game I would have missed if not for the Humble THQ bundle. Reviews made this seem like a bad game, and the concept of fighting aliens in caves didn't immediately appeal to me. Still, GeoMod 2.0 makes for a fun game, and a lot of things felt like an improvement over Red Faction Guerilla, one of my favourite games. Played with mouse & keyboard.

  • PC - Steam

15/01/13 - Finished the game (using a FAQ for the second half or so)

    Time: 7 Hours Played

Notes: I went from hating this game, the last time I played it, to simply disliking it. It looks fantastic and the music is nice, but that's about the end of my pros. When you're stuck (which is really hate generally) it's downright boring walking around the environment. Add to that, the vague, cryptic and pretentious air everything has, and I'm not a fan. Played with mouse & keyboard.

  • PC - Steam

17/01/13 - Finished the game on Medium - Good ending

    Time: 8 Hours Played

Notes: One of my favourite games. It took days to get working, but when it was, I had very few problems. Bioshock in 1080p at a consistent 60 FPS is a damn fine game. Played with Xbox 360 pad.

  • PC - Steam

20/01/13 - Finished the game on Medium - Bad ending(?)

21/01/13 - Finished Minerva's Den on Medium (just after midnight)

Time: 3 Hours Played (Inaccurate - my first session wasn't recorded for some reason

Notes: Still a decent game. There's just something about it that's been lost from the original. The gameplay, I would argue, has been improved - but everything else feels lacking in comparison. Minerva's Den is excellent, the story-telling feels more like the original and there's a good balance to the combat. Played with mouse & keyboard.

  • PC - Steam

21/01/13 - Finished the game on Normal

Time: 11 Hours Played (includes freezes that cost time)

Notes: I love Dead Space, such a great game. The PC port is pretty poor, but its visual and gameplay design are impressive over 4 years later.

  • PC - Steam

22/01/13 - Finished the game on Normal (just after midnight)

    Time: 7 Hours Played

    Notes:

  • PC - Steam

22/01/13 - Finished the game on Normal

    Time: 8 Hours Played

    Notes: Hated it.

  • PC - Steam

    24/01/13 - Finished the game

    Time: 14 Hours Played

Notes: Awesome - probably more fun than Borderlands 2.

  • PC - Steam

26/01/13 - Finished the game on Normal

Time: 11 Hours Played (including idling - should check in-game timer)

Notes: A cool game, if a little weird. I've played it before - it'd be a celebration of gaming hardware if the damn thing ran properly.

  • PC - Steam

27/01/13 - Finished the game on Human difficulty(Is this the normal or easy equivalent?)

    Time: 14 Hours Played

Notes: I have DMC4 on Xbox 360, got it just under 5 years ago and beat it for the first time today. It wasn't particularly difficult on Human, but I don't know if that's the equivalent of normal, or easy. I used an Xbox 360 controller, because why would you want to use a keyboard for a game like this? It looks amazing (and expensive) and ran perfectly - for all the hate Capcom get, they really do a fine job sometimes. It's the first DMC game I've beaten - and I wanted to finish it before starting the new DmC. Oh and I really like the game, though maybe there were 15 too many weapons/systems.

  • PC - Retail (Steam)

28/01/13 - Finished the game on Devil Hunter difficulty (the middle one available initially)

Time: (In-game Stats) Total Time Played: 06:58:04, Devil Hunter Time Played: 05:31:37.

    Steam: 7 Hours Played

Notes: One of the best games I've ever played. The artistic and technical design are amazing, the music's cool and fitting, the new design and story are interesting and the gameplay is stupidly good. The PC version is really technically sound too. This is the first 2013 game I've played, and will really be tough to beat - I just want to start a second playthrough right after finishing it.

  • PC - Steam

30/01/13 - Finished the game on Marine difficulty (normal)

    Time: 11 Hours Played

  • PC - Steam

02/02/13 - Finished the game on Normal difficulty

    Time: 14 Hours Played

Notes: Not bad, some parts of the game are a lot of fun, but others just frustrating, stealth must be one of the hardest genres to get right. I did enjoy it though, despite all the writing and voice acting being bizarre in a bad way and never having really enjoyed a Hitman game before. With pretty unassuming expectations it really wasn't bad.

  • PC - Steam

    04/02/13 - Played through the challenge/demo

    Time: 22 Minutes Played

Notes: Very short, I would have played it longer, but it froze, so I thought "F it".

  • PC

07/02/13 - Finished the story on Normal difficulty

    Time: Unknown

Notes: Another great Dead Space game, I'm going to try to disregard criticisms and controversy in the future - they didn't affect my enjoyment of this game. Not that reviews aren't useful, I just need to play games for myself if they interest me enough, else I would've missed out on a game I liked as much as the other Dead Space games, which is saying something. I went into the demo with lowered expectations and didn't really enjoy it, the game too - but it made such a good case for itself that that soon waned.

  • PC - Steam

09/02/13 - Finished the game on Normal difficulty

    Time: 18 Hours Played

Notes: A great game, I really like the developers' work: namely the Penny Arcade episode they made, definitely looking forward to the fourth episode this year. I think I'm a hell of a lot better at RPGs than when I was younger, I almost employed strategy a few times!

  • PC - Steam

06/03/13 - Finished the game on Normal difficulty with 69% completion.

    Time: 13 Hours Played

Notes: Phenomenal, it boggles me that remakes can be so good - if it wasn't for DmC this would be the best example of such in years, for me at least. Totally fell off of the finishing-games wagon - largely due to Tetris.

  • System: PS3 - Retail

Date: 09/03/13 - Finished the game on Normal

    Time: Unknown

Notes: The first game I've finished on my new PS3.

  • System: DS - Retail

Date: 10/03/13 - Finished the game

Time: Over 1:46 (Played on 3DS)

    Notes:

    Time: Unknown

    Notes:

  • System: PS3 - Download

Date: 13/03/13 - Finished the Journey

    Time: Unknown

Notes: My girlfriend played it. I'm glad to finally experience Journey, having not had a PS3 when it came out.

  • System: PS1 - Retail (Running on PS3)

Date: 15/03/13 - Beat the game

    Time: Unknown

Notes: Beat the Aftermath Campaign on Hardcore difficulty, solo.

  • System: PC - Steam

    Date: 08/04/13

    Time: 52 Hours

    Notes: Finished first playthrough.

  • System: PC - Steam

    Date: 08/04/13

    Time: 6 Hours Played

Notes: Not a very good game.

  • System: PC - Steam

    Date: 09/04/13

    Time: 18 Hours Played

Notes: I started this a while ago, I was intending to play through the trilogy, or perhaps the series. This one got really frustrating though, it's really punishing and the controls kind of suck - otherwise it's an awesome game of course.

  • System: PS1 - Digital (Running on PS3)

    Date: 10/04/13

Time: 10:37:08 (In-game "Total Time") with 27 saves

Notes: The first time I've played the original Resident Evil. It was actually surprisingly easy to control - and as archaic as it is, a lot of it was probably revolutionary at the time it was released. The voice acting boggles my mind though. I only bought Resident Evil 2 and 3, because the bundle price was a lot better, but I think I'll play those at some point.

I also used a guide for the game because I don't enjoy being lost or stuck, especially when resources and saves are limited.

  • System: PC - Origin

    Date: 14/04/13

    Time: 26 Hours Played

Notes: Holds up amazingly well. Other than the combat feeling a little unbalanced, it's phenomenal - perhaps my favourite of the series.

  • System: PC - Steam

    Date: 15/04/13

    Time: 8 Hours Played

Notes: Finished the Ballad of Gay Tony: A great expansion of sorts, and this one works (excusing having to do a little work to get the resolution right).

  • PC - Origin

    17/04/13

17 Hours Played (Some time wasn't recorded after crashing)

  • PC - Origin

    20/04/13

    39 Hours Played

  • PC - Standalone

    21/04/13 (0.5.5)

    21/04/13 (0.5.7)

11/08/13 - Beat the final release version a few times.

    14 hours played (Steam version)

Notes: A work-in-progress game that I learned of when Drew played it in an Unprofessional Fridays video. A hell of a lot more fun to play than it looks - I would buy it if I could. It's currently on Steam's Greenlight and I hope it gets picked up, I've already been impressed how quickly it's getting updated.

  • PS3 - Digital (PS Plus game)

    22/04/13

    Unknown Time Played

  • DS - Retail

    23/04/13

    31:34 Hours Played

    Notes:

  • PS3 - Digital (PS Plus game)

    23/04/13

    Unknown Time Played

Notes: An interesting game, I don't play too many puzzle or adventure games - so it was interesting to try out. Despite some less than perfect platforming and puzzle logic it was a decent game. Unfortunately I did have to look up a guide once or twice, though the game should share some of that blame honestly.

  • PS3 - Digital (PS Plus game)

    25/04/13

    Unknown Time Played

Notes: Listed as God of War HD, I think it's the version included in the HD Collection.

I played God of War when it was released, but I'm fairly certain I never beat it. The game's great, despite a little annoying platforming it holds up almost perfectly.

  • PS3 - Digital (PS Plus game)

    26/04/13

    Unknown Time Played

Notes: A damn charming game, the difficulty balance of the puzzles and the quality of the platforming gameplay both worked exceptionally well. I owe yet more thanks to PS Plus, introducing me to games I may never have played otherwise.

  • PS3 - Digital (PS Plus game)

    01/05/13

    Unknown Time Played

Notes: My first time playing through the game. A really solid game, I'm surprised I hadn't played it sooner - I honestly couldn't remember if I'd ever played it before.

  • Gamecube - Retail

    01/05/13

    Unknown Time Played

Notes: Beat WakuWaku course (The easier of the two) - credits played.

I started playing this to play with my girlfriend, another puzzle game she's better than me at. I thought it'd be fun to play it on an actual Gamecube.

  • Xbox 360 - Digital (XBLA)

    03/05/13

    Unknown Time Played

Notes: The gameplay wasn't as appealing as many an arcade game, but the style, music and multi-player madness sold me on it.

  • Xbox 360 - Digital (XBLA)

    04/05/13

    Unknown Time Played

Notes: I'm not sure what reminded me of Outland, but I remembered it being a cool, relatively challenging platformer, with Ikaruga-like switching mechanics. Was a great game, this is the first time I've finished it - it only really got pretty difficult towards the end, which was pretty rewarding.

  • Xbox - Digital (Running on Xbox 360)

    10/05/13

    Unknown Time Played

Notes: Despite playing the hell out of San Andreas when it came out, this is definitely the first time I've beaten it - and for good reason, these games could be merciless if not outright bullshit at times. The story was pretty nonsensical by the end, but it was a hell of a lot of fun to play, and relearn how games of this age were played.

  • PC - Steam

    14/05/13

28 Hours Played (Some after beating it)

Notes: I can't believe how little I got into this before, it's great, and hugely addictive. I played it for a whole day and only want to play more now I've beaten it.

  • PC - Steam

26/07/13 - Beat the game on Normal

    8 hours played (Steam)

Notes: Easier than original Runner. It was sometimes difficult to discern the character from the background, and hardly kind to the eyes. Those checkpoints though!

  • PC - Steam

28/07/13 - Beat the Awakening story mode

    16 Hours Played

Notes: I finally finished this game, after first playing it years ago. Buoyed by this success, I tried my hand at other Tower Defense games... that didn't go so well.

    23 hours played (Steam)

Notes: I finally played through Half-Life, despite playing its sequel, and its expansions - along with most of Valve's games - I'd never played more than a few minutes of Half-Life. I had forgotten about the Black Mesa re-make and the Source version, so I played on the oldest one going.

  • 3DS - Retail

12/08/13 - Beat the game on Normal difficulty, Classic mode (Permadeath). - 41:44:46 In-game

    Notes: Hard. Permadeath is cool.

    2:10:57 (In-game)

    7 Hours Played (Steam)

Notes: An NES remake, I'm glad to finally have played a game I heard a lot about over the years (especially its soundtrack). HAAARD. That final level... It was actually harder in places than the original was.

  • PC - Steam

    22/08/13 - Beat the game

    35 Hours Played (Steam)

Notes: Archaic, frustrating (no map, difficulty balance) and too long.

  • DS - Retail

04/08/13 - Finished first playthrough (Submarine Ending)

    24/08/13 - Finished 6th playthrough (True/All endings finished)

    30 hours 30 minutes played

Notes: Loved it - a genre I'm newly interested in.

  • PC - Steam

    27/08/13 - Finished the story

    24 hours played (Steam)

Notes: Fun to play, but perhaps my least favourite game in the series.

  • 3DS - Retail

    28/08/13 - Finished first playthrough - Dio - END (had other dead-ends)

05/09/13 - Finished last playthrough, every path, all endings.

  • PC - Steam

    05/09/13 - Finished the game

    10 Hours Played (Steam)

Notes: Not as good as the original, still interesting stories though. Weird technical issues (resolution, scrolling). Annoying limits (play tomorrow, make cake).

  • PC - Uplay (GMG)

08/09/13 - Beat the 5 dark teensies (credits rolled)

    Unknown time played (Uplay)

Notes: So damn good, an improvement over the original - though quite different.

  • PC - Uplay (GMG)

    10/09/13 - Beat the game

    Unknown time played (Uplay)

Notes: Surprisingly good, rewards different styles of play. It gets the balance of stealth gameplay down pretty damn well, along with the balance of old-school stealth, and Conviction's pacing.

  • PC - Steam

    13/09/13 - Beat the game

    12 Hours Played (Steam)

    Notes:

  • Xbox 360 - Retail

    22/09/13 - Beat the game

Unknown time played (Xbox 360) (check Raptr later/in-game)

Notes: Damn good. Another game that stands up to extreme hype. A great swansong for the current generation of consoles.

  • PS3 - Retail

    08/10/13 - Beat Kingdom Hearts

    26:25 played (Last save, in-game)

Notes: Annoying to play, and difficult in parts - the aesthetic still stands up though.

  • 3DS - Retail

15/10/13 - Beat the Elite Four in Pokemon X (Credits)

Kept playing afterwards. Over 300 hours played.

Notes: After skipping a few generations I wasn't too bothered about getting X or Y - though I was hugely impressed that they'd finally done what I'd wanted from them since Pokemon Stadium came out - make a fully 3D Pokemon game with proper catching and training mechanics. I played it with my girlfriend and her friends, at times having 7 of us playing it simultaneously. A great experience.

  • PC - Steam

    01/11/13 - Beat the game - Ending C

    11 Hours Played (Steam)

Notes: Score: 764. Time: 2:09:41. Deaths: 101. I guess it only counts the last session.

  • SNES - Emulated on PC

12/11/13 - Beat the game on Normal (No save states)

    8 hours~

Notes: I think this is the first SNES game I've ever beaten. I was watching a streamer play it and figured that I could beat a game that has Game Overs. It's brutal trying to conserve lives only to have to go back to the beginning of the game over a tiny mistake, or bit of chance - but still very doable. It's interesting getting better at a game, by memorizing patterns and layouts, and repeating stages; but I still prefer saves.

  • PC - Steam

    15/11/13

    46 Hours Played (Steam)

Notes: Way too long. Pretty tedious, despite the fun general game play.

  • Game Boy - Emulated on PC

    15/11/13

    2 Hours Played+ (Manual)

Notes: Amazing gameplay conventions for a 21 year old game. It was suitably challenging, if a little easy on the first run. Infinite continues by default is nice. Extra mode was pretty harsh, until you learn all the new boss patterns. Extra took me 2 hours, first run was probably 30 minutes.

  • NES - Emulated on PC

    3:15~

Notes: Amazing for an NES game. The number of changes from the original is impressive, and it's of a much more reasonable length.

    2:25:24

Notes: A big improvement over Kirby's Dream Land, much better length, and Kirby actually has abilities now. I was planning to say it was too easy, but the last few levels got pretty tricky.
