Quick Look: The Simpsons Arcade Game

1UP's Retronauts had an episode on The Simpsons games a couple of months ago, while I don't recall exactly what they said about this game, I do think they said that it was made before there were much of an recurring cast in the show, which is why a lot of the people and voices here are different than in the show.

I watched this and bought me some Golden Axe.

The movie bored me to tears and I've never really been able to get into The Simpsons. Maybe Futurama (original run) was just more my style...

I used to love beat 'em ups when I was a kid, but now I have come to realize that they are no longer fun for me. The gameplay is too simple and repetitive, even with the more recent games in the genre. I remember really looking forward to Scott Pilgrim on PSN and even though I bought it on day one, I have not finished it because the game literally put me to sleep, same thing goes for Shank. These days I prefer my sidescrollers to be platformers, or metroidvania games such as Shadow Complex. Though I still think a new Battletoads game done right could change my perspective, somebody make it happen please!

The Simpsons show will be ending this season unless the voice actors take a 40% pay cut to their $440,000 per episode, dropping their season earnings from around 8 million to around 4 million. Sadly brad, the simpsons are nowhere near the longest running show on tv Candid Camera spanned 55 years and had 1,000+ episodes and is still only 9th for the U.S. side of things. Thanks for the quick look guys, i used to love playin this with friends in the arcade.

Seems good enough for (kinda) $0 from PS+.

I loved this game as a kid. I was really little when it came out i remember my aunt holding me up to play it until one of the arcade shop guys brought me a little stool to stand on. I remember running into alot of people too while I was trying to beat it (it took at least an hour and i ran into people from t ball and even a bunch of older kids the difficulty was cranked way up and I finally managed to beat it $8-$12 dollars in quarters later.

It was one of my greatest gaming experiences. Many people came in and lended a hand so to speak on a boss here or level there. It was kinda like that on alot of beat em ups Arcade regulars would see someone got really far and would jump in to lend a hand so someone could finally beat a game if no one beat it yet or just because.

In short I really miss that short year or so of the golden age of arcades. :(

I would go to a skating rink and instead of skating I'd play this and Area 51. Those were the days.

I played a lot of this when I was a kid, mainly because I had a paper route and one of my stops was the YMCA and they installed this cabinet. The guy left the top unlocked when he went back to his truck for something and I was able to change the number of lives per credit to something like 10 or something. Best value!

C'mon, four man endurance run this game!

I remember getting to the a stage and fighting bears playing this at the movie theater. It was pretty fun.

I love me some SImpsons, and I know I played this as a kid....but that looks insanely boring now. Like, straight up mindless.

I 100% agree with you. Patrick Klementia is in most of the quick looks and ruins all of them. Of course, it wasn't enough for him, he just had to ruin the ER as well. As a result, I didn't watch that ER. Sometimes I fear that GiantBomb's future is going to be Klementia all the time. And once newer users join up, they will have no knowledge of GiantBomb's past, and think that Klementia is the best one here. I mean, why else are young GiantBomb people hate Alex Navarro? It's due to lack of knowledge. Getting use to Klementia is like growing up with the Star Wars prequels.............

God i loved this game when i was younger. This game has stolen many of quarters from me over the years.

I wish this game lived up to the nostalgia..

The best Simpsons game is the unfortunately mostly-forgotten "The Simpsons Game", from EA. But this is definitely one of the most fun, despite being a dumb brawler (let's face it - they're all pretty dumb and repetitive). Will be downloading. It's a pleasant surprise that Fox, Konami and Backbone got their **** together and decided to release this. It's ABOUT TIME this game got a home port!

I will say this though, I am fucking sick of this attitude of "I haven't watched the Simpsons (or SNL) in a decade though" followed by "it sucks now". That's just a fucking lie. Not all episodes are gems anymore - which was, let's be honest, a super uncanny thing for any show to pull off -, but they've been pretty good on average ever since the movie came out and re-energized the writers a bit.

Played all the way through this a few times in one weekend a long time ago. I think I also played all the way through House of the dead 2, and 3 that weekend.

@vinsanityv22: Nah, the best Simpsons game will forever be Hit and Run. That game seriously needs a sequel.

Brad, you are about right, Seasons 3 through 8 are the golden period of The Simpsons. Conan was part of it but the real writer with the touch was John Swartzwelder. They even had to bring him back to help write the movie.

agreed...not trying to bash Brad and Vinny, but listening to them try and recall Simpsons references and characters when they admittingly haven't watched the show in forever makes my brain hurt. regardless, this is just awesome that finallllllllly i can play The Simpsons Arcade Game without having to drive 90 minutes north to the Hampton Beach arcade in NH.

Yeah, good memories, but Konami's beat-em-ups are just made for taking your money.

Something like Final Fight or Knights of the Round can be 1CCd if you're good enough though.

Is the Simpsons still on the air? Are they still making new episodes? *googles* Good lord! I remember the exact episode that made me stop watching. Not sure of the season number, under 10 probably. It was the episode where Bart shot a bird with Nelson's bb gun. The whole episode was like some coming of age drama. It was srsbzns simpsons. That was it for me. The show had jumped the proverbial shark. I have not tuned in ever since.

EDIT!!!! --- wiki says it was Season 10, Episode 3. "Bart the Mother". That's the one that killed it for me.

I remember how incredible this game looked in the arcade when I was around elementary school age, and I remember when I tried to download the arcade rom on my 8gb Compaq and now its finally avaliable for my Xbox. I know I'll beat this game in 20 min and probably never touch it again...

but I still want to buy it so badly! Why are beat em ups so addictive?!

I used to play the hell out of this before I even watched The Simpsons.

I remember wanting this to come to Marketplace for so long but now that it is and I see what it looks like now, the rose-colored glasses of nostalgia are gone. Holy moley.

The boss battles look just stupid. The first boss is one of the wrestlers from the episode where Bart becomes a daredevil and jumps things with his skateboard (pretty sure it's called "Bart the Daredevil") but from the rest of what they showed us, the bosses are just random guys. Seems kind of a waste.

Also, why the hate on Brad for not recalling something from over 20 years ago?

PS Still remember the "jump the shark" moment for me. 300th episode, when Homer and Tony Hawk Matrix fight with skateboards. Just plain stupid and I lost a lot of interest in the show at that point.

Oh man, I used to love playing this game in the arcade!

Protip: In the US ROM, the wrestler boss will get a hit in after he gets hit 3 times. Hit him two times, then use your strong attack (Jump and attack at the same time.) for the third hit. Jump over him to make him attack. Then repeat.

Thankfully they didn't ruin the Quick Look of this game with Patrick Klepek.

The Simpsons is my favorite show. I like this arcade game, but it's a bit pricey at $10 and I wish it had come out a bit later in The Simpsons' run so that it could have had more secondary characters in it.
