Giant Bomb's Top 10s for 2010: Day One

The Giant Bomb staff and some of our favorite people submit their top-10 lists for 2010.

Alex Navarro

Christina Norman

No Caption Provided
Christina Norman is a gameplay designer for BioWare, having contributed to Mass Effect and Dragon Age: Origins, and working as Lead Gameplay Designer on Mass Effect 2. She is currently working hard on Mass Effect 3, which means she knows all sorts of secrets about Shepard's next adventure that you would absolutely kill to find out.

Picking my top 10 favorite games of 2010 was really hard! When I sat down and looked at all the great games I had played the list was monumental. Many Venti lattes were consumed as I argued with myself over each change in ranking.

In the end, I was surprised at my own list, particularly given that many five-star games did not make the cut. Generally speaking, I've enjoyed all the games that are on other top 10 lists, and the absence of any of those games from my personal list should not be taken as a slight to those games. Halo: Reach is a great example--I love the game, it's super enjoyable, it just didn't make the cut for my personal 10 favorite games of the year.

I also decided to exclude my own game (Mass Effect 2) because we Canadians just don't nominate ourselves. With that said, I am incredibly proud of Mass Effect 2, and grateful for all the effort by my friends at BioWare who helped make the game what it is. I am honored it is on so many other people's top 10 lists for 2010.

Without further ramblings, here is my list.

10. FrontierVille

I checked out FrontierVille because I had a Twitter friend who worked at Zynga who recommended it to me. I'd been avoiding all the "Ville" games on purpose, as I was sure they were not for me, but (putting my designer hat on) it seemed like a game I could learn something from. I was surprised to find FrontierVille provided a charming experience. The design was strong, with mechanics that fed back into socialization, daily play, and spending real dollars on advancement. I particularly enjoyed their quests, which drove you along a simple linear story, and taught you the mechanics of the game. Whether you love or hate Facebook social games, you can't deny these games are now an important part of the gaming economy.

9. Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction

No Caption Provided
I'm not a huge stealth fan, and I've never played any Splinter Cell game for more than half an hour. The cinematic style of Conviction, along with what seemed to be more "shooter" gameplay drew me in.
I soon discovered this game definitely was not a shooter, but its unique puzzle-stealth gameplay was really enjoyable once I got over the hump of trying to go Rambo on every encounter. My favorite feature overall was its unique cover system.

8. Alan Wake

I didn't know a lot about Alan Wake when it came out; I vaguely undestood it had been in development for a really long time, and it was highly anticipated, and it had an interesting story. That was enough to get me to buy it. I initially struggled with the combat mechanics, but once I got the hang of it I found the light mechanic was quite novel. Through the entire game I found a number of really well-crafted pieces of content and design. The story was a bit wacky, but also really engaging, and I finished the game feeling really satisfied.

7. Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale

No Caption Provided
I buy all kinds of games during Steam sales, and this was one of them. I'd heard about Racettear but didn't really know much about it. Something about running a RPG item shop? One thing I'm (designer hat) interested in is game economies, so any game that involves buying and selling items I am willing to try. Once I started playing Recettear I found much more than I expected for an indie game: nice, styilized graphics, a (wordy, Japanese) story, some fun action-RPG gameplay, and lots and lots of buying and selling. The overall feeling is quite retro, but I love retro games, so for me that's a plus.

6. Darksiders

Darksiders is a crazy kind of game, it has a whole lot going on and some of it isn't super polished but... a whole lot is going on and it's generally pretty well done. For the pure amount of cool stuff they crammed into this game it deserves being on my top 10 list. I really loved the combat in particular. It was challenging, but also very accessible, with a lot of available depth if you wanted it. I've never really liked Zelda games, but Darksiders had enough God of War to keep me interested, and in the end I really liked the Zelda-esque gameplay.

5. Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit

No Caption Provided
I don't play racing games. Maybe some Mario Kart at a party, but that's about it. I checked out Hot Pursuit primarily to check out Autolog, as I'm interested in social gaming. As soon as I tried cop mode, I was addicted. Every update from Autolog was a taunt to beat the scores of my (incredibly talented) friends. I found myself playing the same game 10+ times to try and squeeze out a 0.4 second victory.

4. Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies

I like JRPGs but I usually play them for 5-10 hours and then quit. At some point I get "gamer vision" and I can clearly see the next 60 hours of the game and I decide to skip actually playing it. Dragon Quest IX was different. In a lot of subtle ways, it was more friendly, and easier to play, than most JRPGs. A simple example: when you die, you lose some gold, but that's it. They also had a great, deep, class progression system. JRPGs often do. The combination of accessibility and the depth of the class-building helped me get into a weird gamer optimization mode where for 10-20 hours I enjoyed grinding my characters to perfection. Actually playing the game was fun as well, including the simple but very well-done story, that was bright and cheerful, but also genuinely touching.

3. Game Dev Story

No Caption Provided
I am totally biased when it comes to this game. It was basically made for game reviewers and game developers. What can I say, I love it, it pokes fun at the games industry while also being a solid little sim game. I'm biased, so who knows? Maybe this doesn't deserve a spot on my list... but I think it does.

2. Sid Meier's Civilization V

Any game that can suck up hundreds of hours of your life is really good, or really evil. I think Civ V comes out on the good side. The gameplay of Civ V has been nicely refined to be faster, and more accessible. I don't really notice while I'm playing what's changed since Civ IV, but the game experience feels much smoother. Civ V was also pretty bold in its changes, removing unit stacking, giving range defense to cities without units, letting units embark, and moving to a hex grid. Each of these changes had a huge impact on the game, stirring things up and making it play in a way that was truly different from Civ IV.

1. StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty

No Caption Provided
StarCraft II is basically Baseball II, or Hockey II. It's not really a game so much as it is a sport. The main risk I saw as I was waiting for it to come out is that, somehow, Blizzard would screw up, but they didn't. StarCraft II is a truly great game, and in my opinion, is better than the original. The single-player campaign is great on its own and provides sufficient value to justify the full purchase price of a game, but the single-player game is only a small portion of the total value. The multiplayer of SCII remains at the quality you'd expect from Blizzard. It is the new center of the RTS genre, the comparison point against which all other games are measured.

DLC games getting games of the year is odd to me. They can be really short, have one little aesthetic or gimmick, but they keep you interested since they are so short and you don't get bored cause its over so fast. And most people beat DLC games verses getting half way through a boxed game. I say they need to make separate categories, box game of the year and DLC game of the year.

A full retail game has sooo much more in it, and since its long you might not see it all. Donkey Kong had a beautiful silhouette level that was easily equal to Limbo, yet Limbo gets looked at as the "art" game, DK has so many other levels besides the sunset one that the silhouette ones get ignored. Not saying DLC games shouldn't be on here, or that DK is better than Limbo, but 4 of the top 10 games of the year for him were DLC? Really? Is it just that you didn't have time to finish Red Dead, Halo, Mass Effect, Darksiders, Enslaved, Bayonetta, etc... Heck I like Costume Quest too; but Heavy Rain or Mod Nation Racers were both longer, had more content in them, and were better experiences for me - with a lot more time invested by the developers.

I just don't think "Cut the Rope" stands up to what you got with a game like Nier. I can only assume its because he is on a movie site and can't play as many games, and again DLC games are quick and you can actually beat them. But i feel DLC games should be in a different category. The experience is just so different from a regular box game. But then again they are cheaper, so maybe its a bang for your buck kinda thing? Oh well its just opinion anyway, i just feel bad for the games that took so much longer to make.

Are you referring to Limbo? I don't think you understand what "downloadable content" means. Limbo is not downloadable content, it's a full game distributed digitally. It's digitally distributed.

And if someone feels a downloadable game is the best released this year, they should be allowed to name it as such. Games like Limbo or Super Meat Boy and more than worthy.

Oh awesome! You got Christina to do a Top 10 list!
I tend to think that she's one of the reasons why Mass Effect 2 is so good. She went from programmer to designer for ME 2 and all of a sudden all this gameplay that COULD be improved was improved.

@ LordAndrew -
"I don't think you understand what "downloadable content" means. Limbo is not downloadable content, it's a full game"

ah well I do know what "DLC" is, and it can be extra content for a game sometimes. But these games are distributed in the same way DLC is distributed. Are you saying the game isn't downloadable content? i have content on my machine i downloaded! So I would disagree with you as well. Maybe call it downloadable only? But its clearly a DL game, and it is content, so calling it a DLC game shouldn't be wrong.
Plus even if im wrong you don't have to be a semantics nazi about it.  And you can get into murky waters where a stand alone game like the newer "dead space" hacking DLC game or Fable Pub Games are in fact stand alone "downloadable" games that you don't need to own the box game for, BUT they are also DLC for their up-coming games (content is unlocked in the box game by playing them). Its a gray area anyway so don't be so smug! Saying a "DLC game" is like saying a "video" when you have a DVD; the description might not be 100% accurate but it still works, most people would know what i meant by a "DLC game" - that its download only, short, less expensive, smaller developer usually, can be bought with Xbox fake bucks, etc....  Again you could say its a "DL game or DD game" if you wanna get bent out of shape about it? But Ive never heard anyone say those abbreviations EVER for digitally distributed or down loaded games. Its downloadable only, on PSN or Xbox Live;  people get what I mean by DLC game, like ATM machine; its wrong but we say it.

Okay, so where is the thread where I find out what the fuck happened with the Best New Character category?  The Bombcast was definitive on Mordin as the winner, but this originally said Bayonetta as the winner...and now there is some crazy picture of Mordin and complete indefinite WTF-ness going on.

I liked how Christina says that she likes stealth... as I play Mass Effect as an Infiltrator and that she was nervous that Blizzard would screw something up in SC2, shows she obviously understands how we feel about her next game!!!

Yes, that's what I said and that's what I meant. "Downloadable content" has a specific meaning that can't be interpreted merely by reading the words that make up the term. The "content" that you download is for existing games. Stand-alone games are not downloadable content, but they may have downloadable content. Call it a "downloadable game" if you want, that's an acceptable term. Just don't call it "downloadable content".

But aside from the terminology, I still disagree with your point about downloadable games with regards to GOTY.

I 100% disagree with you. You need an abbreviation and saying "downloadable games" each time is too long. Plus what about disc games like Crackdown that can also be downloaded? That's very different than limbo. I say its any content that’s downloadable.

In their game of the year day 2 they have a “best downloadable only game”, so maybe we will call them DLO games? Fine with me. Not to different than DLC game though is it?

I get that you see DLC as “new characters” or “extra weapons” to an existing game only. But what about “downloadable add-ons” that Giant Bomb mentions as a category this year? Its DLC for a specific already made game, but you cant just say DLC because it’s a whole different game tacked on (like Minerva’s Den for Bioshock) right? But its clearly DLC for that game. But its its own game!? Brain scrambled! Or a Marvel pinball level in Zen pinball, it’s a DLC cabinet for that specific game on Xbox, but you can buy it on its own on PSN! Holy cow what to call it!? Stand alone on one console, DLC on another!? What about Red Dead and the Undead pack? That was DLC for the game, comes on a DLC disc with lots of multiplayer DLC, (that even you'd call straight up DLC), yet it’s a stand alone game you don’t need to own Red Dead for. What do we call it? I’d say a DLC game. But its a whole game. But its on a DLC disc!? And again what are the “Dead Space Hacker” and “Fable Pub games” considered? Full games on their own that add content into the box version of the game, but you can play them on their own. Saying a “DLC game” gets the point across, even if its 100% stand alone like Limbo. Its downloadable, its shorter than a box game, its cheaper, its generally a smaller team behind it…. And Mass Effect 2 has tons of “DLC” for the Xbox version, but that will all just be part of the game next year on PS3… What to call it? Give us a better abbreviation for all these games with their different situations and unique stings attached, and we will use it. But I think there is too much gray area involved to be that picky.I'd be fine with DLO games, but DLC games i still stand behind 100%.

Also DLC means “content that’s downloaded”, again, a game is content I have downloaded onto my machine. Limbo is content that was given to me over the net. I can;t get it on disc, it is content that needs to be downloaded. Why do you think that “content” can only be a new suit for Little Big Planet, or car skin for Forza? I bought the Dead Space game with the same fake xbox dollars that I bought the extra suit in Dead Space with. I don’t see how that’s even a wrong abbreviation in the first place. If people can say “ATM machine”, I can say “DLC game”. (Or “record of the year” for a CD). Plus I don’t just call it DLC, I specifically say it’s a DLC GAME, adding in the game part. Making it different from just “DLC”.

@LordAndrew:  Just to show im not alone in this, i was just listening to the Gamespot Hotspot for 01/04/11 (you can find that yourself) they are guys who are on a major game site being paid to talk about games for a living. Brendan begins the talk about Case West as "a sizable chunk of DLC". Again this is not a skin or extra for the game proper; your save game does not even carry over to this game! You do not have to own the game, (and they even suggest not owning the game), to buy and play this. Its 100% its own game, probably more game length and content to it than Limbo even has. During the talk both Tom and Shaun also refer to this stand alone game as DLC. You wanna say Dead Nation is not a "DLC game", that makes you mad for some reason? I see 0 difference in the two game and how they are delivered, one is based on a game thats already out but that's it, and PSN isn't even getting Case West that's how much of a stand alone it is. Not saying its "proper" or the best term (just like ATM machine), but just that there are "professional" game guys saying Case West is DLC (not even DLC game like I'd say).

Really disapointed the Alan Wake song, The Poet and the Muse didn't get a mention really like the song and feel like it tied into the story really well.
