PlayStation Long Boxes

No Caption Provided

I am on a [very slow] quest to obtain a copy of every game that was released before the original PlayStation converted to regular-ass CD jewel cases. A total of 104 games were released in the various versions of what have become known simply as "long boxes." There are three types of long boxes. About a dozen of the 103 games are available in multiple types of long boxes.

Plastic (34)

These are essentially big jewel cases. They are known to crack super easily from normal use, so finding one in good condition is becoming more difficult now that they're over twenty years old.

Flat (32)

These flat, smooth cardboard boxes don't have anything to hold the manual in place inside. Many of them included a foam brick inside that kept everything from shaking around inside while closed. Most people seem to have unfortunately thrown the foam away.

Ridged (49)

These cardboard boxes have a plastic, ridged hinge on the spine. These are the most common type.

I love this style of case, but I am only at 21 of them. I feel like I never see them, and when I finally do they are so beat up or missing parts. I think a good portion of my plastic ones have a big crack in the middle, similar to Saturn and Sega CD cases.

@marino: All of mine have come from thrift stores/garage sales so far, except for one that I bought at a game store.

I didn't end up getting my original PlayStation until these were mostly phased out, and the ones that were still around weren't games I cared about then.

When you pick them up at PAX do you find that they hold up alright when bringing them back?

Haha when I saw the name of this list. MK3 was the first one I thought of.

@shoshiaj: It's the first one I had, so I had to go with it.

I owned about three ridged games, but I think I traded those in fairly early. As crazy as it may seem, I liked when they moved to CD jewel cases - neat, efficient, slightly German. However, the long boxes do elicit that nostalgic feeling.

Here's one I remember from back in the day that's not on the list.

Zero Divide. It is a 3D fighting game where you play as different computer viruses.

As goofy as it could be sometimes, (The announcer is Xtal the last boss and he is an unbound goofball), I remember it being pretty fun!

I haven't played it in YEARS and I don't know how well it's held up. Video below is worth checking out for the announcer's ridiculous nonstop play-by-play commentary. Sounds like they just grabbed one of the developers who could speak the best English.

I think I still have this one somewhere, but haven't seen it in a while.

@mokotronics: It's on the list. There's a second page after the first 100. I don't think I've ever played that one.

@marino: Oh snap! Missed page 2.

I'm always just itching to have an excuse to bring up Zero Divide I guess. :D

Dare Devil Derby 3D and Triple Play 98 were never released as Long Box releases. There were 102 official retail U.S. Long Box releases, excluding variants.
