GB Weekly Feed #8: Monthly Special Edition (Feb. 20 - Feb. 26)

March Contest

I was going to have a recent game as the prize for this month's contest, but I have decided instead to offer several less expensive titles. No designing this month, so entering will be much easier. I had a sudden urge for a Double Fine theme. Note: You're on the honor system to buy the XBLA game with the points. I will follow up with that winner, so don't do anything to taint your name (you also get $5 extra, so don't be a chump).

Prizes

  1. Psychonauts (PC/Steam version)
  2. Brütal Legend (X360 or PS3)
  3. Stacking or Costume Quest (actual prize: 1600 Microsoft Points card code - $20 value)

Contest

Simply post here stating your most important contribution(s) to Whiskey Media (any site). Blogs, reviews, wiki, paid membership, etc. Also state the game(s) you would like in order of importance (1 being the one you most want, then go from there). Only naming one game does not lower your chances of winning. Please do not list games you do not want, do not intend to play, or already own. Also state if you need a PAL version and I'll see what I can do for you if you win.

Deadline

March 12, 11:59 PM Eastern Standard Time (GMT - 5)

*One prize per winner. Winners chosen at random. Deliveries only made to actual addresses (no P.O. box).

New From Origina1Penguin

Since I terminated release dates from The Weekly Feed, the calendar is obviously gone too. I had planned to replace it with something, but a lack of feedback and ideas has left me a bit aimless. If I think of something (or someone super cool suggests something great), then I'll edit it in. I'll have more free time to experiment once I'm back in school, or should I say when I stop working full time. I had some free time, so I updated my APB Reloaded thread with more Beta details and general updates.

Speaking of free time, I actually did some decent gaming this week. First of all, I've been playing a bunch of Minecraft. I downloaded four texture mods, but have only tried one so far. It is an amazing HD texture pack and it makes the game so much better to me (and I'm no graphics whore). I also got a cel-shaded pack, a Legend of Zelda pack, and a clay pack (makes everything look like it's made of clay). The game has been crashing on me though (even without new textures) since the recent update with beds. Hopefully Notch and Co. will fix that after GDC because it's apparently a widespread problem.

I also jumped back into Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. This is my favorite multiplayer game of all time and I've been dying to play more. Punkbuster has dicked me around a bit while trying to join games, but I have gotten onto a couple servers. I've read Windows 7's UAC settings may be responsible, so I'll see if I can lower that to join more games. Anyways, the game still holds up and is incredibly competitive. It's been a long time since I played, so my skill is a bit off. I did manage to stay in the top 3-5 simply because I played the classes well. Six medics and no field ops is a frustrating site to see, so I played FO a lot even though it's not my favorite class. It's a really good game to train your PC aiming abilities though. It takes more bullets to kill enemies than more modern games so you focus on head shots a lot (even then it takes 3 hits with an smg). Look for GLHB if you happen to be playing next week.

OK, here's my most important contribution to the site: Renegade Ego. I'm pretty sure that I rank up there as one of the most frequent bloggers, if not in sheer number, then in consistency of frequency. Also, order:

  • Stacking/Costume Quest, since I'd be able to run them now.
  • Psychonauts, since I'd be able to run it eventually.
  • Brütal Legend, since I already own it. It's not that good.

Away from the contest, though, I'd love to see more retro reviews. I'd do some, but very rarely do I find a game I feel I can review; the chances of that game being retro are "fucked%."

@Video_Game_King: You're not required to list all three prizes. If you own it or otherwise don't need/want that prize, then omit it.

I love your contests. It is my goal to win one. I actually haven't played any of these, so:

  1. Psychonauts
  2. Brutal Legend
  3. Stacking

Hey, you already put them in order.  =P

Lots of good topics/blogs/reviews etc. I continue to enjoy the featured user ratings and whatnot.

Edit: Oh, sorry, totally forgot to complete the contest requirements. Well, I have 5,000 wiki points. That may not be a lot, but it's something. I also write blogs and contribute to the photo edit thread from time to time.  :)

I have over 320 blogs on this website, blogging here every 3 days (at least) since the site was launched in 2008. The only people who blogged more than me are Bruce and Dalai. They are both on the list

Video_Game_King probably would have blogged more if he actually split his blogs up into chunks instead of posting STUPIDLY LONG BLOGS ABOUT EVERYTHING so he probably deserves to win.

But yeah. I blog a lot.

I'm trying to figure out why you would post this, I can't figure it out and it's kinda wigging me out...

Since I won the last thing I'll respectfully keep myself out of the running.

(Also, this way I can pretend that the pic up top isn't the only thing I've actually contributed to the site.)

Whats the difference between this and community spotlight? They seem to serve the same function. Very cool as well, just curious.

@Mikemcn:

The purpose of this blog series is to point out noteworthy users in the community so you don't have to dig through the site to find them (like I've been doing). In case you somehow have missed it, ZombiePie has an ongoing project called The Community Spotlight which he also does weekly. I'm not trying to do the same thing exactly, but rather I'm trying to compliment his work by providing an alternate source of community appreciation. He has been doing a great job with for quite a while now, so definitely look for it anchored at the top of the General Discussion board.

Yes, I just quoted myself. Anyways, you're right that they are very similar. I'm not sure what ZombiePie's process is, but I look at every thread (and forum-linked blog), review, and guide posted for the week and point out the ones worth reading. I tend to select more for my weekly thing because I believe many users get overlooked. I try to pick a new individual user each week to be "featured" so there is a more equal opportunity to be noticed. I have also planned on expanding it since I started, but nobody has suggested what they would like to see so far. When I start having more free time, I will just make up my own new features. By the way, I've stated all of this across the "New From Origina1Penguin" segments from each week. If ZP ever wanted me to stop, I would oblige.

Why don't you post a reply stating that you have done a fair amount of wiki work and are a regular forum poster. Then you can win a game, duder.

@MarkWahlberg: Enjoying Alan Wake so far?

@Red12b: New contest at the end of each month. I probably should have wrote that again this time. Not many people saw the last one either, so they wouldn't know that.

I feel a little dirty applying for this contest.

  1.   Stacking or Costume Quest (actual prize: 1600 Microsoft Points card code - $20 value)
  2. Brütal Legend (X360 or PS3) (PAL)
  3.   Psychonauts (PC/Steam version) (since I used to own it.)

Anyways, I like to think that these things means a lot to someone... somewhere:

@Origina1Penguin:  I'm actually away from my xbox for the time being, but I sent the code to my brother, who played some and reported that it was "pretty cool". Thanks again!
