Doom proves that gameplay can still make a really fun game 0

Rebooting Doom was no easy task and I had quite a few reasons to think this might not turn out so well. Those fears were unwarranted because this does exactly what a fan of the original Doom would have wanted. It brings back the frantic pace that has been lacking in FPS lately. This game looks great visually. At the same time it modernizes the mechanics of the classic games in a way you still have quite a few options even on a controller. The ye old weapon wheel is in effect for choosing most of...

A great setting that is let down by uninspired gameplay 0

I’ve been meaning to play this since the quick look Giant Bomb did back in 2011. 4 years later I finally got around to it. Kenka Bancho has a setup only made possible by the fact this came from Japan. Takahashi and his schoolmates are on a school trip to learn more about Kyoto. But Taka isn’t the type to care about school work and is more interested in picking fights with people. So it is a good thing that every Bancho in Japan has decided to hang out in Kyoto this year to prove who...

The blueprint to make a LEGO game hasn't changed in a long time, yet it can still be fun game to play 2

Every few years I like to play through another new Lego game. They may not be the most complex games but the humor keeps me coming back for more. As you can infer by the title this follows the events of the 4 Jurassic Park movies. Starting off with John Hammond's ill fated enterprise to create a dinosaur theme park and the adventure through many different islands till someone decided to try to once again open the park in Jurassic World. Along the way like every other lego game they add humor i...

A fair free to play game and a okay platformer 2

Making a free to play game can be slippery slope but this developer found a way to turn a platformer into a reasonable FTP game. Spelunker World is a sequel to the infamously hard NES game. A new spelunker has decided to search through the mines to seek a grand treasure. He still has the same weakness as before with the greatest one being that falling 2 feet equals death. Although you may expect to have a hard time beating these stages this game is a lot fairer to the player early on. Later on ...

This game rose above its predecessor to create a even better experience. 0

The introduction flashback actually takes place in Syria before sending the player back to Siberia for the rest of the game. Following up a fantastic reboot of the Tomb Raider franchise is no easy task. Yet Eidos managed to add enough new things to make a good game into a great one. The story picks up a year after the last game with Laura looking into what her dad was working on before he died. This leads her to do a small globetrotting adventure in search of the city of Kitezh. Which is just a...

A neat puzzle game that has some technical issues on vita 0

Playstation plus has been a great way for me to check out a variety of smaller games that I would have overlooked otherwise. Nova-111 is apart of the selection of PS plus games this month. It does something that hasn’t been done in very often in video games up to this point. Turn based movement mixed some real time obstacles. The basic plot of the game is that a spaceship full of scientists gets lost in a dimension rip after a grand experiment. They don’t try to tell much of a story...

Dragon Quest + Dynasty Warriors + Tower Defense = A Great Game 0

I skipped over this game at first because I thought I had played enough musou side games. But after seeing Jason's positive attitude about it during Extra Life made me decide to check it out. Turns out adding in some light tower defense elements adds some much needed variety in a series that has gotten boring for many people. DQH follows the trend of gathering a bunch of heroes across many different games to battle evil. The basic setup is that this world was full of nice monsters till one day ...

Do you like cute things and music? Well then I have the game for you. 0

Not every stage has a ton of random anime nonsense in the background. Unlike this one...Rhythm game fever seems to come to me in waves. I've ended up playing two completely different musical genres with the two rhythm games I decided to play. This first one stars Japan's number one vocaloid Hatsune Miku. Although she is not in her somewhat normal proportion and instead decided to trade it for a super cute SD form. Along with her other vocaloid pals Rin, Lin,Luka,Kaito and Gumi as they preform 4...

I see the potential of what this game could have become but it relies a bit to much on its "assets" 3

So upfront Huniepop is exactly what it appears to be. A match 3 game mixed with some dating sim elements. Now I just have to figure out if it is a good game as well. If taken seriously the story in this game would be pretty bad but it has a humorous tint that I rather enjoyed for the first few hours. It stars a down on his luck dude/lady that has been chosen by the love fairy Kyu who plans on making him/her into a stud. To do this he/she will have to learn how to say the right thing along with ...

A fun game that might not have much staying power 3

Other than renting Amped 3 one time I haven't played very many snowboarding games. My love of Tony Hawk series of games have at least made me interested in checking this release out since it was on PS plus last month. The story of SSX is just a excuse to get the player to try out every character and all of the gear that makes the dangerous descents doable. Team SSX has to prove they are the number 1 snowboarder group by surviving the 9 deadliest descents while rival snowboarder Griff tries to t...

A addictive FtP game that gives the player no reason to keep coming back 0

I hope you like the look of this one tile set since this is all you'll be seeing for the entire time you play this game. I will say this screenshot does at least look cool. Okay that title isn't completely true but the only reason I stuck with this game for a week was because I wanted to obtain the trophies. Guns Up is a mix of tower offence against other players and some tower defense against a CPU opponent. When attacking other players in PVP the player must spawn troops from a limited pool to...

A average game that can still be enjoyed 0

They don't mention it but each character has slightly different stats. The beat em up genre was a staple of the NES/SNES generation. Except once the PS1 showed everyone how awesome a polygonal 3D model could be a few developers tried their hand at making a 3D brawler. Most of the time that didn't work out so well but Fighting Force was a exception. Although I didn't know it at the time this was mostly thanks to the fact this game was going to be Streets Of Rage 4 until they lost the rights to it...

A great game in its day that now looks dated 2

The N64 version has 2D artwork for cut scenes. The N64 era was a slow time for the Star Wars brand unlike now. Which most likely let Lucasarts set this game in between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. You will play as Dash Rendar who also happens to be a smuggler like Han Solo. The game starts with the battle of Hoth and continues through to other locations in order to take down a new crime scindicate named Black Sun. Xixor is the head of the Black Sun and he will do anything to be Th...

Blowing up tie fighters never gets old 0

This may not have made it on my top 10 Star Wars game list but it was the foundation for the much improved sequel. Thus it has some of what made the sequel really good while having other issues like game balance. Rogue Squadron picks up a bit after the destruction of the Death Star and follows Luke and Wedge's new elite fighter squadron through 14 missions. This set up lets the developers take the player to many different environments from the sand dunes of Tatooine all the way to the volcanic ...

A short and fun side scroller 0

I remember playing the demo for this a while ago. The cartoon visuals left a impression on me but I never got around to playing it till now. As you might be able to infer by the title you play as one badass chicken commando. Who has taken up a duty to destroy a evil penguin regime that has taken over the world. To do this the player will need to guide our hero through 12 episodes full of shooting and a bit of jetpaction. Ah I felt like I just wrote a back of a box blurb.Taking over rocket troop...

Deadpool didn't earn this remaster but we still got it 1

This game highlights the remaster age we are in. That statement doesn't mean this is a bad game since it has a few good points too. Starting off this game is all about Deadpool staring in his own game. Plenty of wacky moments of him realizing he his in a game and general crazyness await. Sadly the humor didn't leave me laughing and instead the gameplay was where I enjoyed my time playing this game.A few X-Men show up but they don't do anything other than being thrown into a bunch of jokes. They r...

Burial At Sea is a great epilogue for Bioshock Infinite 0

With this review I'm reviewing both Episode 1 and 2 at the same time. Burial At Sea managed to do a lot more than what my expectations were when first hearing about it. Anyway first up this piece of dlc is set in Rapture again with Booker as a private investigator that is searching for a child he lost while Elizabeth plays the dame who has the info he needs. This leads to a collusion you'll most likely expect if you've played BI before but where it really gets interesting is the beginning of th...

A average game that got a bad port job to Xbox one 2

What could have been a fun little action RPG is hampered by technical and game balance issues. Although the name implies that you'll be playing as Van Helsing you'll actually be playing as his son along with his ghost ally Katarina. But he is still a monster slayer and his goal is to bring peace back to Borgovia which has been taken over by a mad scientist. To bring them down the player will need to slash or shoot his way through a almost endless onslaught of foes.Although it may just be two ag...

Great looking graphics does not make a good game 0

The Order: 1886 calls back to Uncharted: Drakes Fortune in a few ways. They are both graphical powerhouses and they both have only like 3 enemy types for the entire game. But the biggest divergence is this game has to be the most linear game I've played this year. Before we get into that I want to bring up the narrative which has you playing as Sir Galahad a knight of a order that is trying to swash a rebellion and creatures of the night. Yup Werewolf's are a issue in this world and that tidbit...

A repetitive romp through a Halo side story 0

The story is told via motion comics. Halo: Spartan Strike is Microsoft's 2nd attempt at making a top down shooter based on the Halo universe. It is to bad they didn't learn anything from their last attempt. To start off the story is about a unnamed spartan that has been tasked with running a bunch of simulations to get ready for battle. Which is just a excuse to revisit old locations like New Mombasa and Gamma Halo. Each environment is recreated well and the visuals are fine for a game that was...

This may be packed full of Persona 3 & 4 fan service but it might not be for you 0

How can you not bring Koromaru with you in every battle? Plus he looks even cuter than before.Up to this point I've really enjoyed all of the other spin off Persona titles yet this one left me annoyed at some of the gameplay mechanics. This doesn't mean the game can't be fun it just left me feeling like I was missing something. Anyway lets focus on the best part first the story. The cast of Persona 3 & 4 have been thrown into a bizarre alternate version of Yasogami high which is full of shad...

Lite on content yet still packed full of fun 0

Visual wise this game is really impressive.Star Wars: Battlefront takes up the banner for Destiny 1.0 of being the best 3 star game I've played this year. Upfront this game has no story and is just about working with your teammates to take down the enemy team. Although it may not have a single player campaign DICE spent a lot of time on making this game look like Star Wars. Between the sounds of a blaster or the gigantic AT-AT everything in this game looks like you remember. This is augmented wi...

A visually impressive game that is also fun 0

Guilty Gear Xrd gives a old fighting game franchise a impressive visual overhaul while still keeping the somewhat complex fighting system intact. Most of my reviews start with a few lines of text on the story but lets skip over that for now and talk about the mechanics. This is a mainly a 4 button game with a extra Dust button to knock opponents into the air. In traditional fighting game form this is augmented with a selection of special attacks performed via actions like a Hadoken in Street Fi...

Transformers Devastation is a game that is full of nostalgia 0

Yet that nostalgia might have clouded a few thought processes when reviewing this game. I'm not saying this isn't a fun game since it is but compared to Platinum's last licensed effort (The Legend Of Korra) this game isn't much of a improvement over that release. As the game starts Megatron has once again started one of his crazy schemes to take over the world like this was a episode of the Transformers 80's TV show. Of course the Autobots lead by Optimus Prime must take down Megatron's plot and...

A adventure game that reminds me of early Tell Tale games 4

As implied by my title this game felt like it fell outta Tell tale's wheelhouse circa 2008. In almost every way other than adding in a combat mini game. But first let me mention the plot. Finn & Jake find a magical ticker tape machine that magically prints out mysteries that are happening in the land of Ooo. They decide to start up their own investigative service and solve any problems that show up on any of the messages that print out of the machine. To do this the player will need to explo...

A atmospheric sci fi adventure 0

I may be a year late but The Fall seemed like a game I should check out. The game opens up with the ai named Arid crash landing on a backwater planet full of things that will harm her pilot that she is trying to keep alive. Exploring the shadowy halls and caves will lead to picking up a bunch of items like a pistol or ever a tire iron. Using said items on the right location will grant the player with new areas to explore and new twists in the story that'll keep you sticking around for more. The...

Zombi lost something more than just a U 0

The safe house is the place where the player stores items. This is also where you can fast travel to other locations. The transition from the Wii U to other platforms makes this title lose some of its charm. The base game is still good and the setting is unique for a horror game. As the game opens up it turns out you are a survivor of a Zombie outbreak and a mysterious stranger called the Prepper has decided to aid you. After guiding you back to the safe house he gives you a cricket bat and tell...

The end of the world has some caveats 0

Mad Max creates a fitting post apocalyptic wasteland yet not all of the gameplay systems create a fun time. This game begins with Max losing his precious V8 interceptor car to a bunch of raiders. Luckily he quickly meets Chumbucket who is a mechanic that thinks he is a Saint and must work with him to create a Magnum Opus. The Magnum Opus is a car that can be customized by the player in many different ways. You could create a tank that can't be killed or a spiked monstrosity that damages any car ...

A game that expands on the foundation of the MK reboot 0

29 fighters is a healthy roster for a fighting game Rebooting a franchise isn't a easy task but Netherrealm Studios managed to do that with Mortal Kombat. Now they have the humble task of iterating on that foundation. They decided to do that by giving the player a ton of options. Each unique fighter like Sub Zero has 3 different variations of a fighting style. For example Cyromancer style gives him ice based weaponry while Grandmaster allows him to use his ice clone a few different ways. They ma...

The Castlevania that mixes the old with the new 3

The boomerang continues to be a effective weapon I couldn't just play Aria of Sorrow without playing the other GBA Castlevania that I happen to own Circle of the Moon. They both may be from the same franchise yet this one feels a lot more like a NES Castlevania mixed in with a giant explorable castle. I know your not expecting this but Dracula has returned and a small group of vampire hunters have come to banish him into darkness. Nathan Graves happens to be the protagonist this time and he weld...

Once more we delve into the madness of Corpse Party 0

The lighting system in this game looks good. While also requiring you to use the flashlight to spot dangerous objects. This entire series has been a mixed bag of good and bad things that turn into a fascinating video game. Corpse Party: Blood Drive continues this trend of good things like the crazy story they wrote while also turning exploration into a chore thanks to all the traps. But lets focus on the game first shall we. After the end of Book Of Shadows the cast that survived must come back t...

One year later this review can finally be written 0

Wandering around a area clicking on items is still a aspect of these games.Throughout each episode this game had a constant mixture of humor set between action set pieces that got you to the next point in the storyline. Humor is relative per person but if you've played the first episode and laughed a few times then the rest of this game is worth seeing. Action wise the game sets up situations that are unique and are fun to watch whenever you don't have to worry about hitting a QTE. The overall s...

A Godzilla simulation that just isn't fun to play 0

Godzilla uses his signature move atomic breath Upfront I'm letting everyone know that this game is bad but that doesn't mean it doesn't have things I like about it. The things that make this a bad game also make it a good Godzilla simulator. The main mode in this game is God Of Destruction which is about using Godzilla to rampage throughout Japan fighting other Kaiju along the way. The game is set up like a arcade game with separate destruction zones that can be destroyed in order to grow Godzi...

The game that made creating levels fun 0

Super Mario Maker makes good on the promise of the Wii U pad and also has a really good set of level creation tools. Until now none of the games made for the Wii U have used the gamepad in a way that makes you think that this game could only be made for it. Along with the ease of use of the creation tools also makes this game a step above other games based on level creation like Little Big Planet. When the player starts creating a level all they have to do is place items where they think they sh...

Can you keep up with the Kickbeat? 0

The story is told via a motion comicRhythm games still come down to if you enjoy the music. So check out the tracklist before you even think about picking it up. In my case I can enjoy just about any kind of music so I went in knowing nothing about it. (Plus it is a October PlayStation Plus game.) This games story mode follows Lee and Mei who must fight their way through a assortment of unique looking stages to retake the Sphere of Music that was stolen from master Fu's monastery. Mighty Gunvolt: The game that tried to recapture our youth 0

I keep going back and forth with my thoughts on this game. On one hand it has a basic foundation of it being a throwback to the NES era. Each level has a unique theme and music to go along with it to represent the game series is it from. Plus the 3 playable characters have unique skills like Beck's Dash attack or the fact that Gunvolt can double jump. Along with all of that every boss has a different pattern you must puzzle out to achieve victory. Which is all countered by that fact that this g...

This sorrowful song is worth revisting 3

The Castlevania series has been known for either super hard linear stages or a big castle that can be explored with power ups the hero finds along the way. At least in my case I went from Castlevania III to Castlevania: Aria Of Sorrow. Which is why I was so impressed by this game when it first came out and continue to think this does a few things better than Symphony of the Night. As the game opens you are introduced to Soma who gets accidentally trapped in Dracula's Castle and now must fight hi...

The competent Super Meat Boy clone 0

This month's PS Plus (October 2015) seems like a cruel joke on the developers of this game. After all who would want to play a clone of Super Meat Boy when they could play the real thing? Kung Fu Rabbit isn't even trying to hide the fact it was based on SMB since all the signs point to it being a clone a few minutes in. You play as a rabbit that can jump his way through small levels that test your platforming skills in different ways. Disappearing blocks, spike traps, enemies, and fireballs the...

The guide to why I think a Dynasty Warrior game is fun *AKA The one piece pirate warriors 3 review 0

Most of the in game cut scenes are like this one. Although they go all out for boss finishers and important story points. With over 15 years of Warriors games it feels like I should know a little bit about what makes a good one. First up at least in the case of games like this one that are based on anime should make good use of all the story arcs to recreate them in the style of a beat em up game. Which this game does well with plenty of cut-scenes to explain the story while also giving the game ...

The remaster we didn't need but the game still holds up. 0

If I took the time to write down every game that I thought needed a remaster I don't think Castle Crashers would be on it. They decided to put one out and give it to anyone that owned the original release so I ended up playing it a month later cooperatively with a friend. Which is the best way to play it since playing alone goes against what they were going for when making this game. After all it is a classic beat em up in every way with a touch of absurd humor to keep you going just to see the...
