Ubisoft Unveils TMNT Smash Up

Can you believe that it's been 25 years since the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles first came out? It's probably not that hard if you're not an old-ass man like me, but I'm an old-ass man who can't reconcile the amount of time that has passed since he first heard the Ninja Rap. Ubisoft is using this silver anniversary as an excuse to bring the toitles to the Wii in an all-new four-player fighting game. Though the press release makes no explicit mention of the game's name, the included screenshots feature the name TMNT Smash Up, which makes a certain amount of sense, considering the involvement of Japanese developer Game Arts, which had a hand in the development of Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The screenshots themselves also suggest a similar style of action to SSBB.

Aside from the fact that the game won't be explicitly based on a specific TMNT cartoon, movie, or comic, and is scheduled to come to the Wii this Fall, Ubisoft isn't saying much else about TMNT Smash Up at the moment, though it promises more details in this month's issue of Nintendo Power.

It looks ok. I'm glad the makers of Brawl are making it at least. I wish it wasn't a Wii exclusive though.

I really don't know what to say. I love the Turtles but a fighting game? And on the Wii of all consoles? Why? Sounds to me that Nintendo is really pushing to bring out some "serious" games on the Wii.

Seeing as the last 50 TMNT games that have come out have been shit, no one should expect any more of this one. Especially with it being this type of game...on the Wii.

Fuck I expected a remake of the brawler for PSN/XBLA/Wii. Would have bought that in a heartbeat.

Why can't they just let TMNT die? Also, the game will be hopefully as "good" as Castlevania....Judgment, although the Smash Bros developer gives at least some cred.

Ninja turtles are so late 80's they just don't have the same appeal that they did when kung foo turtles were edgy and cool.

This could be awesome, but like Castlevania Judgement, I can't help but wonder why this is on the Wii. Judgement would have been much better served on the "lead sku" consoles with a better online and better graphics. And maybe more characters.

I hope TMNT doesn't have this problem, and is as every bit as good as Smash Bros. Brawl, but with Turtles, because that's awesome.

BTW, I'm pulling for Bullseye.

They should just remake Turtles In Time / Tournament Fighters for xbla/psn.

Wow. I knew this from last month's Nintendo Power.  I haven't read the article, but the screenshots did nothing for me.  Not a big Turtle fan.

WTF? Why are so many people bashing this idea? A TMNT brawler designed by the same peeps who designed Smash Bros. Brawl sounds like a great idea... especially since Brawl was the fourth best selling game of '08 in North America. I play Brawl all the time and will definetly pick this up. Change is good, especially when it has something to do with my favorite childhood toys, tv shows, games, etc.

the graphics look crappy, but dude, these games rule in co-op. i remember me and my friends played the shit out of the ninja turtles game on xbox.

game arts developing it, it can't be that bad. even if its nothing special, i can't imagine it being not fun. fun is fun, so if this game can deliver that much, count me in.

I actually like that visual style. Makes me think back to the action figures instead of the lame cartoons.

This is gonna sound hard to believe, but some of us are not all that fond of SSBB... or the countless knock-offs.

I personally think this is awesome.  However, if it's only on Wii there will be pretty much no chance of me getting it.

If it's in the Smash mold I'm game.  The developer has previously worked on Nintendo's Super Smash Bros Brawl for Wii, Grandia series for PlayStation and Lunar for Nintendo's portables. That's quality, even if Ubisoft's Wii division is not.

How hard would it have been  for them to just make a Ninja gaiden rip-off with a bunch of ninja turtles and not do this?

I highly doubt that this game will be good.

I know its still early but im pretty excited about the game, they have such a huge back catalogue of characters they could use!  Its also great to know that Peter Laird is involved in the story so it should be authentic!

Wii :-( Well, if it is as entertaining as TMNT Tournament Fighters combined with SSBM it might be finally a reason for me to get a Wii :-/
