Not really. I may have at some point, but even that I'm not sure. I may have owned an N-Gage... or did I just play a demo version... it's all a blur.
Do you own any failed console?
In honor of Panasonic announcing it's soon-to-fail portable console, I figured I would make this poll to see, exactly what kind of junk the GB community has in their proverbial closets. If you used to own any of these systems, that counts too.
Ok, so the Turbographix is kind of stretching it, as it was pretty popular in Japan, but you know what I am talking about. Dreamcast and Saturn don't count either, because both have a respectable stable of good games and only failed because the Playstation exists.
Don't own any at the moment, but I consider the Gamecube to be a failed console and I owned one of those.
In any case, I would love to read your justification of the 3DO, a console that cost $700 in 1993, when both the SNES and the Genesis were retailing for around $150 at that point.
My first will probably be the Jungle.
If it is under 200 bucks I'll probably get it as a novelty. I still don't know what the fuck Panasonic is thinking.
"i think the definition of fail is a console that got bitch slapped by it's competitors to oblivion.diddent know the Nokia N-Gage was a console. in anycase if you include the Nokia N-Gage then the psp should allso be on it and that one is failed and yes i own one
"
During PAX this year I picked up a Sega Saturn. I have enjoyed it immensity, although, it's probably the strangest fucking console I own. Upon teaching myself about the crazy library of games for it, the uses of the ram extension slot, the fact it has better copy-write protection than the Dreamcast? (?O_O?) I await the next strange thing to learn about this console.
I've got a Sega CD, Virtual Boy and a TurboGrafx. I also own two Nomads (one MIB, the other for actually playing), the pretty pointless SuperGrafx and the Amstrad GX4000 (which doesn't even warrant a GB wiki page). I must point out that I've purchased all of these well after what can only be amusingly referred to as their "heydays."
Failed systems is a weird subject. First of all there is a lot of confusion and disagreement on what is or isn't a failed system. For example a lot of people talk about the Dreamcast as a failed system, but you specifically say it doesn't count on your list. Someone on here even mentioned the N64 as a failed system?! They might just be confused - very very confused - but there are differences in opinion none the less... It seems like the failed system are usually the most innovative and "outside the box". Even though they failed they had great ideas, and obvious features that competitors lacked. Like the Sega Game Gear was back-lit so you could play in the dark waayyyy before any other handheld. And the Nomad - remember that? You could play Genesis games on the go?!?! It was the shit.
Proud owner of both a virtual boy, (still works!) and one of those pure awesome turbografx things. (A ducttape covered abomination, but also still works!)
As a side note, New Adventure Island, Bonk's Adventure and Parasol Stars are still some of my absolute favorite classic games.
" @ZombiePie: Oh snap. I forgot the Neo-Geo. But does that count? I mean, it was always more of a niche thing anyways and it had a lot of good fighting games. Hmm... I guess not.The Neo-Geo is definetely a failure as a console from a business stand-point, but maybe lesser so as an arcade platform.
In any case, I would love to read your justification of the 3DO, a console that cost $700 in 1993, when both the SNES and the Genesis were retailing for around $150 at that point. "
Mind you, there are a lot of great games that came out of Neo-Geo, and it still survives today with an absolutely insanely priced collector's market that would just blow any other system in this generation out of the water in terms of value and collectability. If you define a 'failed console' a little better though, you could make some points for a few of the systems in your poll.
Not sure i'd agree with all you guys calling the Game Gear a failed system- it was the biggest competitor to Nintendo's throne. It sold about 11 million systems worldwide; not a huge hit, but definitely a solid showing. The Saturn...I could argue either way (I do own one & love it, by the way).
My dad (and by extention, I) owned a Sega CD, but I've got one that you didn't post on there- the Game.Com. Yup, I owned one of those bad boys.
I own a Gizmodo. Great little thing, with some really fun games.. but the only system in existance with a worse screen than the original GBA. Makes playing games on it almost impossible.
I'm gonna have to say that the Saturn was a failure so that would count. I also have a Game Gear, but I don't think that would count because it did as well as anything would be expected to against the Game Boy.
My roommate, however, has a Virtual Boy and it's right next to my desk. I kinda love the thing and I'm pretty pissed that it didn't take off. Mario Clash was rad.
Neo Geo Pocket Colour, that is totaly the boy, but never got off the ground. Also, a Game.com which was god damn awful.
