Giant Bomb's Game of the Year 2010: Day One
I think they can't decide between Bayonetta and Mordin because they simply know that Francis York Morgan should win, but just can't bring themselves to admit it.
Or am I the only one?
" Wow, way to encourage more pubescent thirteen year old boy games, with the awards to Bayonetta. And Pacman for song? It's almost like you guys didn't even PLAY Alan Wake. Old Gods of Asgard, anyone?! The riding-to-Mexico song in Red Dead, anyone? And Borderlands, because of DLC -- for which at least one of the three packs was classified as basically "not worth your time" by Giant Bomb quicklook/review? "Sure they played things like Alan Wake and Red Dead and such. They just liked the song from Pac Man and Bayonetta as a character more. What part of that don't you understand?
Probably just comes down to difference of opinion, but the DX music just seemed like a cool one minute beat to me, and not a great song. Doesn't really compare to the more developed tracks of SMB or VVVVV for that matter. Though that's obviously colored by my love for the music developed in playing through them and love for retro-inspired music in general.
I do wish that they had done best soundtrack overall, as there are some great contenders and I think SMB works better when seen in the whole with the light/dark/retro/boss variations on each of the otherwise great themes that match their world fairly well.
I think the only way to settle the problem between whether Mordin or Bayonetta take the Best Character award is to say fuck it, York wins.
" Giant Bomb gave no love to RDR because R* didn't sent GB a review copy. "eh, Marston is just another GTA main character who doesn't want to do all this shit and has to but this one's got a drawl
Mordin was an alright character but he didn't stand out for me. His loyalty mission felt like one of the weakest ones and without going through the trouble of talking to him on the ship he just felt like a scientist on crack. Even then I'd argue that's when he had his best lines.
I listened to the entire show, including the conclusion of the Mordin decision twice, and yeah, they blatantly called it for him. I kept thinking, maybe they come back around and give it to Bayonetta?
Or maybe they talked about a shit-load of games for a week straight and … forgot? Awesomer.
Either way, this makes my fictional TOP TEN GIANT BOMB MOMENTS OF 2010. (#2 after $750,000,000)
" Did Ryan say, "Easily the biggest Starcraft 2 Fag" @ 4:10? "Yeah he did....O_O
I guess I shouldn't be surprised, everyone knows Ryan is an absolute dick.
" Jeff seems to have this irrational dislike for RDR, he was arguing hard against Marston, even though he did not really play the game. I am ok if he did not choose him, but if you have not played perhaps he should defer. "I know what you mean.
To be honest the whole concept of these GOTY podcasts is bullshit to begin with, cause it all comes down to who is gonna back down and accept the opinion of someone else even though they dont agree with it. But its made worse when you have a scenario like this where someone hasn't played the game that they are talking about.
I would have preferred if instead they just did the personal top 10 list in podcast format, and cut out the scripted video lists altogether.
" Giant Bomb gave no love to RDR because R* didn't sent GB a review copy. "Yes, that is exactly why. All of the Giant Bomb editors have no integrity, whatsoever.
To quote Chie, Sheesh. Jeff doesn't like Western settings, so he doesn't like Red Dead. I love the game myself, but it's not too hard to understand.
That Pac-Man song is dreadful.... causes me headaches.
Anyway, I guess it's cool if you like techno, but GB dudes... best original song of the year, really?? That kinda shows a complete disregard for an enourmous amount of really amazing orchestral compositions that were made this year :(
" @Branthog said:Regardless of the quality of Bayonetta the game, Bayonetta the character is, despite the inexplicable awarding here, a two-dimensional, wildly misogynistic stereotype. Confident in any situation? Yes, but only because she has a one-note personality. The game is awesome in spite of Bayonetta, not because of her." Wow, way to encourage more pubescent thirteen year old boy games, with the awards to Bayonetta. "Sounds like someone didn't play Bayonetta. "
" I like how nonchalantly Ryan throws out the phrase "Starcraft 2 fag" at 2 minutes in. "He very clearly says "fanatic."
Fantastic and well thought out awards. Bayonetta really deserves the kudos and extra exposure. If you haven't yet played it you should go and grab it at discount price right now. There's almost no excuse anymore.
Well, considering my favorite soundtracks of 2008 and 2009 were respectively: Bionic Commando Rearmed, and Shatter...I don't see where you're coming from. The thought that some generic orchestral music is somehow more prestigious and deserving of an original soundtrack award baffles me, since I'm 95% less likely to listen to the official soundtrack of a game featuring that type of music." Darksiders was ROBBED. I hope it manages at least a runner up in some category, though I doubt it. No one gave that game enough of a chance and simply wrote it of as a zelda clone. Its much more than that, even based on the depth of combat alone.
